This wasn’t my usual type of read but I enjoyed the premise and found myself getting immersed in the storyline; at some points extremely annoyed with the characters and their decisions. A gripping tale.

Bad Parts has an interesting premise. What if you could trade a "bad" part of your body for a good one? Make a deal with a creek demon, exchange a faulty leg, heart, etc, and then you're bound to one town. Of course, making a deal with anything described as a demon will inevitably go wrong.

The story is good, eventually. The first 25% dragged too much, though. The very first few chapters made me think I was getting into a generic, run of the mill, low-end horror thriller. But it evolved into a fresh, interesting, and developed plot. What I didn't like about the first few chapters is that Ash sounded like a teenager in a bad YA novel, immature and flat. Around the thirty percent mark, though, the action picked up, the story deepened, and I kept listening until the book was over.

That brings me to characters. The characters in Bad Parts are there to serve the story, and they do this well. They don't have a lot of development or facets to their personalities, but they believably help with the plot.

The narration of Bad Parts audiobook was odd. The narrator did a decent job of changing voices, but sometimes what sounded like purposeful accents were downright odd. I increased the play speed, which helped greatly.

I probably wouldn't read this book again, but I'd read a future book from the same author.

Brandon really captivated me from the first sentence spoken. This was such an immersive read that I was obsessed to say the least from the very beginning. Brandon really knows how well he can weave a web and drag you into it. And I was happy every single web that was wrapped around me as I finished the book.

"Bad Parts" is a book about Ash, a member of a band that winds up losing a hand and goes on a search for a new one. It was definitely a rather strange but somewhat interesting plot. It was probably a bit stranger than I anticipated but certainly enjoyable.

After reading Bad Parts, or rather after listening to it, I realised that the description of this book basically tells you a good chunk of the plot, as weird as the plot is. This book is about a girl named Ash who is in a band, after losing her hand sets out to find a good replacement part, and not a bad part!. I was honestly looking for something both supernatural and horror based, as well as being a little bit weird, so this book definitely delivered on that aspect.

This book did give me supernatural thriller vibes and even some horror moments, with a plot I can definitely say that I have not read anywhere else. It was fast paced, unique and I did enjoyed it more than I thought that I was going to, with me flying through this read. The mystery and suspense kept me hooked, while also delivering on the writing, which is why it’s strange that I hadn’t heard about this book before requesting it and I still haven’t heard anybody talk about it.

What was nice about this book, was it’s uniqueness, which is rare these days, with you constantly feeling like you’re reading the same story, but worded differently. Because of this, I found the story to be unpredictable, which I loved, especially when it came to not being able to fully predict it’s ending. This book definitely made me excited to read more by this author, especially as horror seems to be a genre that he rights most. So excited!!

This book is 100% why you should take a chance on a book you’ve never heard of!

Thank you so much Netgalley for the advance reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This audiobook is marketed as supernatural thriller. The story is fast paced. To me this book is more like a horror thriller, which isn't my cup of tea.

Unfortunately I was unable to finish this book, I really liked the story, but I did not like the narrators voice.

I will purchased a copy of the book and review on my Instagram

This supernatural thriller follows Ash Hudson, a rock guitarist who goes home after an injury causes her to put her music on hold until she can heal it. Her home, Hollow Hills, is the home of a supernatural being capable of doing just that for her, as it has been doing for the residents for years. Trading parts allows for the residents to live a relatively happy life without fear of disease or death. The only catch is that should they leave town, the parts disappear. With a potentially career-making gig coming up, Ash can't be stuck in town, so she makes a deal that changes everything.

The above description contains minor spoilers but gives nothing away that isn't in the summary of the book. This was a very unique and interesting take on the simple them of organ donation/organ trafficking. I wasn't sure what to expect when I read it, but I'm glad I did. I finished this book in less than 24 hours and it didn't disappoint. I gave this 4 of 5 stars because it just wasn't quite up to par for me in storytelling. I think there could've been some more to it. Other than that, solid story.

I was impressed with the storytelling or the story line itself. I think the genre is just not for me. The first bit was interesting but as I went on I felt bored and like I was forcing myself to read it.

I received an audiobook copy of this through NetGalley (thanks!) and it was actually one of, if not the first audiobook I've ever listened to.
This book really appealed to me as it has supernatural elements and sense of thrill. It was definitely not like anything I've personally read before. A creepy river spirit that gives people new limbs and organs? Unique for sure. And there are conditions to these 'trades' too, of course. The two main things are that the trader cannot leave the town without losing their new part, and there is only one of each body part available. (This latter rule is somewhat bent when the protagonist, Ash, makes a deal with Snare, the spirit.)
There are various subplots throughout the book, including family dramas and even a romantic storyline. There is a fair bit of loss and some pretty unexpected events overall.
While it sounds promising - and don't get me wrong, I did like it - I didn't overly enjoy this book. I didn't connect with Ash or feel her emotions, and I wasn't keen on the narrator's voice on the audiobook edition. I lost interest occasionally and would find myself having to listen to certain parts over again just to remember what was going on. However, this was my first audiobook experience which was possibly a factor in my struggle to focus on it.
Overall, I rated this 3 stars. Perhaps if I read the book myself rather than listened to it, I may have enjoyed it more.

Bad Parts is just the kind of creepy story that works well for the Halloween season. It's a bit too far into cheesy territory but just the idea of the traders is chilling. Despite that, I had a few problems with this one. Parts of the story are drawn out while other parts move at a fast pace with lots of action, and the bounce back and forth is rather jarring. This story is loaded with possibilities, but it kind of feels like the author didn't know how he wanted it to go so he threw everything at us. Then we have a whole cast of characters who seem to be incapable of making a good decision. Seriously, not a single one is the type of character I'd want to root for. There is a turnaround for a couple of them late in the book, but it's too little, too late, especially after everything that has to happen for them to get to that point. It all comes together to make for a story that is convoluted and busier than it needed to be. Sometimes, less is more, and this book could've used a bit of that for a more effective story. Finally, there's the narrator, Ellie Gossage. Her voice works well for audio, and she does inject a good amount of excitement into the dialogue. It's the rest of the story that falls short because everything that wasn't dialogue sounded like a news reporter, reporting a story. It had that same tone and felt distanced from the story. In the end, Bad Parts was an okay story with promise, but the whole of it fell way short of the mark.

The characters were easy to connect with and there were lots of twists and turns which made it easy to keep reading not get side tracked by life. I wanted to read more and more. It’s definitely one of the best books I read this year

Supernatural, fast paced hometown horror story. This will satisfy fans of sci-fi, thriller, and horror. Easy to read in one sitting! The concept was really unique and the character development was amazing.

Thank you to netgalley and the author for the review copy of this audiobook!

This book was not what expected! It was better! I really enjoyed it and the tragedy this book holds and the story it tells was done great! I will be keeping an eye out on other works by this author!

However, the narrator wasn't the best but I did speed it up and ended up enjoying this a lot more!

I highly recommend this read.

Bad Parts is a “supernatural thriller” following a lead guitarist of a rock band who suffers a hand injury in a assault and is forced to return to her home-town, where a creek demon trades “bad” body parts for healed ones. Part of the contract prevents people from leaving the small town or their traded part will simply disappear, either deadly or simply difficult to explain.

The novel reads like a horror B-movie, complete with creepy creek demons, characters that show up just to die and cringey dialogue. This is not necessarily a negative attribute, but it made the entire novel feel off-kilter for me. The side characters are never full developed, beyond just having things happen to them, but I did like the main character and how she is developed though the novel.

The creep factor is really high with this book. The very premise is so strange and I think the plot perfectly meshed with the creepiness of the entire idea. The actual plot itself is weirdly paced, with some parts happening at breakneck speeds, while large parts of the novel have nothing happening. The entire conclusion was almost at a fever pitch, with so many different events happening my recollection has merged them all together.

The visuals of this were what really gave me b-movie horror vibes. The creek monster was described very extensively and the actual description called to mind the Creature Of the Black Lagoon, complete with the rubber mask.

Overall, I think this was an interesting debut novel, but just felt a little off for me. I don’t think I would be interesting in the sequel, but maybe another series or standalone by this author could interest me.

3.5 stars

I could not stand the characters in this book. There were veeeeery few redeemable qualities in any of them. The premise of the book was so promising which made it all the more disappointing. I dreaded listening to it, because I would get so mad at everyone's actions. I can't imagine what a series would look like, although many of the characters were killed off(probably the only one I liked), so maybe that's a good thing.
