Patrick loves his sister's tights. They are comfy and stretchy and keep his toes warm in bed. He uses them as a bandana, a leash for the dog, a rescue rope, and a zipline for his stuffy. When his sister ruins the tights he is devastated as he is the only one who knows their potential. His family is supportive of him wearing and playing with the rights and they replace the ruined pair with 3 pairs of his own. Patrick is elated to have his own tights but holds onto the original pair too. An adorable story of acceptance breaking the gender role barrier. The illustrations were fun and colorful.

Patrick loves his purple polka-dot tights! They’re perfect for playing in, playing with, and keeping him warm on cold nights. But they’re not, they’re his sister Penelope’s tights. Patrick’s Polka-Dot Tights does a nice job of touching on quite a few topics - sharing, siblings, exploration and gender expression. McCurry isn’t heavy-handed in her message that “it’s okay for boys to wear tights.” She covers the topic gently and simply shows that this particular boy, Patrick, really loves tights and is thrilled to get a pair of his own! I think she does a great job with her message. As a children’s librarian, I choose not to use books in storytime that only show white characters. So the lack of diversity in this book means I will likely not use it for storytime. However, I still enjoyed the book and think it will circulate well.

3.5 rounded up!
This would be an easy book to pull in for a writing lesson and it would fit perfectly with a prompt about something you love and why you love it. It’s simple and can still be taken as a resource a lot of different ways,

Patrick really loves these tights... they are pretty cool, I have to say( purple, polka dots.. yes and yes!). In Who’s line is it anyways way, Patrick has figured out how to use these tights in endless creative ways that delight him. I appreciate how matter of fact this book is, there’s no teasing or disapproval, shame etc.. the story really just is Patrick and these tights he loves, simple and sweet and that’s it. And hey, I found that kinda refreshing — plus, if it works for Patrick, it works for me! :)

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Patrick's Polka-Dot Tights is a cute, sweet, simple story about a young boy who loves his sister's tights. He uses them for play and dress-up. They're his absolute favorite! But then, tragedy strikes when his sister reclaims them and wears them to her piano recital. I enjoyed this cute little story and loved how loving and supportive all of Patrick's family was. Never was there any confrontation about Patrick loving his tights!
