What a wonderful book! I learned so much about President Obama and found his story to be inspiring. The activities and questions throughout the book make for stimulating conversation and really added to the story itself!
What a great book. It would be a great addition to any classroom or library. I love the way it's broken down. That it has glossary words. Great illustrations.
This is a new entry in a series that I highly recommend. Each title provides beginning chapter book readers with a readable and detailed story of a person's life, in this case Barack Obama. There are illustrations, timelines, questions to think about, a quiz and more to extend and enhance the reader's experience.
Readers watch as Barack begins his life in Hawaii and goes on to live in many places including Indonesia, gets an education, finds love and makes his way in law and political life. They learn about his white mom and his Kenyan dad and see him becomes the country's first Black president. All of this is done in a book that engages the reader.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review. I recommend all of the books in this series; they will help children to understand history and to dream of all they can do in the world.
Lovely and informative book for children. I love the little "myth & fact" sections, as well as the quizzes. I would definitely recommend this to my students.
The Story of Barack Obama is no exception. This book relays the story of how Barack Obama's parents met and Barack's childhood in Hawaii. The book then tells of his time in school & college and his political career.
We enjoy the little myth vs. fact breakouts in each chapter, along with the colorful illustrations and maps. There are also great discussion questions to get you talking about issues and ideas brought up in the book. There is also a multiple choice quiz in the back of the book to test what you've learned.
This is a great book for any kid who wants to learn more about Barack Obama. It is appropriate for elementary age readers and the wonderful illustrations will help to pique their interest as well.
The Story of Barack Obama is part of a new biography series for young readers. Released 28th July 2020 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 67 pages (for the print copy) and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a well illustrated, colorful, and engaging biography. The material is presented chronologically and includes lots of quotes from the people famous for civil rights, service to the USA, and current history. The art supports and illustrates the story very well. There are included time lines with bullet entries which provide a concise look at when important events happened and how they affected him growing up.
This would make a superlative choice for classroom or home library (or public library, when we can use them again). There are text box guided questions throughout called "Jump in the think tank" which ask the readers salient points to expand on during their reading. They invite the reader to think about how things which impacted Mr. Obama are also relevant to kids today.
There is also an included glossary and comprehensive bibliography/resource list for further reading. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to educators.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This is a wonderful chapter book with pictures for kids to learn the biography of Barack Obama. I especially liked the sections of myth vs fact where they cleared up some possible misconceptions. The geographical component was also good so the kids could understand where each of the events in Barack Obama's life took place. This was a very engaging and easy to understand book. I look forward to other books from this series.
