Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this books, I was so excited t read this book. I was a little bit disappointed because I didn’t really feel like this did anything other than define the word grief but
Although adults hope to protect children from difficult situations and feelings, this is not always possible. There are times when life events cause even young children to feel tremendous grief and sadness. This book provides a welcome resource for those times.
Reading this book with a child will normalize their feelings and assure them that it is important to talk about them. The author provides many examples of situations that may cause sadness and also shows the many different ways in which a child may be affected. This allows the book to be helpful for many different situations. In addition, there are suggestions of things that a child can do to cope. For example, talking with a trusted adult or expressing emotions through art or music.
This illustrated and short book is a wonderful resource. It is highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
Why Do I Feel So Sad is a wonderful children's picture book on grief. I loved that they incorporated a myriad of reasons one might be experiencing grief, and also normalized the feeling. This is such an important topic for children to understand because identifying what grief is is such a huge part of the coping process no matter what loss you have experienced. Highly recommend!
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest and fair review. What a nice book to share with a younger child that is going through hard times. As the book said, people grieve for different reasons and it is displayed in various ways as well. Many kids may be feeling grief as a result of the current pandemic. The coping skills in this book are easily understood and helpful. The illustrations were awesome! I will definitely get a copy of this book for my classroom.
This book is really great for showing to children, especially younger children. Since it is set in the fall, it can be a great book to start the year with, and it also provides several resources for parents and educators to connect children(and themselves!) to necessary tools for coping with grief and loss. The use of oranges/burnt ochres throughout the book is refreshing, as much of grief is shown in blues, and these orange hues create more hope, acting as a symbol for darker days that can still be filled with light and warmth. The book does a great job of portraying a diverse group of children dealing with all kinds of grief, though the character on the cover is followed throughout the last third of the book, which makes it a lot easier to identify with a specific case of grief. Overall, this is a great resource for parents, teachers and kids, and shines brightest when giving tools to guardians on how to explain grief and loss to children, and how to begin coping with it themselves.
This book was engaging and it opens up to a lot of discussion on grief and loss. The book shows different types of grief and how people may cope. The book also has some ideas and discussion starters.
