This is the first in a new mystery/thriller series featuring psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker. The setting is Fog Harbor, California, present day.

Women are being murdered and all of them have a connection to Crescent Bay State Prison where Olivia works in the mental health section there. All of the evidence points to an incarcerated serial killer, Drake Devere. Rockwell and Decker end up working together to figure out if Drake is really committing these crimes. NO SPOILERS.

There was a lot going on in this book and sometimes the writing was a little too embellished, if you know what I mean. Lots of descriptive phrases and similes etc. I had a bit of a time trying to develop any affinity for either of the two main characters -- each with a complicated backstory making them both a bit of a psych mess themselves. The whole relationship between Olivia and Deck is textbook cliche romance more reminiscent of young adult love-hate, push-pull dynamics.
I was also annoyed that the reader is left with many unanswered questions and no conclusion to the story so I assume book 2 will pick up where this left off. I'm going to go ahead and read the second one, hoping that I get the answers and become more invested in the characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Olivia Rockwell was a prison psychologist who had returned home to look after her younger sister, and one of the violent prisoners was accused of the murder of a teacher. It was up to Olivia and Detective Will to get to the truth.

I liked reading the book from a psychologist's input into the mystery. Both Will and Olivia seemed competent, but I was not too fond of their chemistry and weird behavior. At times, I felt that they were like poles of the magnet, repelling each other. All the characters added to the story. Slow to start, the story soon settled down and the subplots added to the intrigue.

Overall, this was fast-paced with some great unexpected twists in an unusual setting.

This is only the second book by Ms Kane I've read, but I can see her becoming one of my new favorite authors! The book was thrilling and captivating until the end. Recommended.

Watch Her Vanish is the first book in the Rockwell and Decker series by Ellery A. Kane. In this story, women working at a correctional facility are being targeted by a serial killer. The main suspect is an inmate but it doesn’t make sense how the inmate would get out of a maximum security facility and commit murders then get back to his cell. Needless to say, the case had detectives scratching their heads.

I liked the prison angle and the mix of characters working with the inmates. The complexity of the case with very few leads also held my attention. The small town setting is another aspect that I enjoyed. Decker and Olivia as lead characters are interesting though a bit cliché. Handsome, rugged cop and the beautiful, smart shrink who have instant chemistry, nope!

There was a lot to like in this story but for some reasons, not all puzzle pieces slid into place for me. There was something missing. Something that had me feeling disconnected and struggling to get back to the book such that it took me 2 weeks to get through 400 pages. The lack of resolutions at the end had me frustrated. I usually don’t mind cliffhangers but in this case, I really wish the case was fully resolved.

The jury is still out on whether or not I will continue with this series. However, I am in the minority. If you’d like to read this one, please consider checking out other reviews on Goodreads where majority of the readers seem to have enjoyed this book way more than I did.

Criminal psychologist Olivia has moved to Fog Harbour to be with her sister. She is working in the mental health unit in Crescent Bay prison when a few of the female staff are attacked and killed. The manner of the murders are similar to the methods used by one of her prisoners Drake, but he is behind bars. Is he guilty or is it a copycat?
I enjoyed this book, the first I have read by Ellery Kane. Olivia has an interesting back story as does the detective involved Will Decker. They work well together to solve the mystery. I look forward to reading more from the author.

Someone please give me closure!

Watch Her Vanish has so much potential. The writing is engaging, with moments of perfection. Sometimes I’d linger over a sentence for the sheer pleasure of the rhythm and wording.

BUT. Why oh why does there have to be a “but?”

Pacing is slow due to a large amount of repetition, particularly in regards to the main characters’ backstories. Too much of this book is spent dwelling on, expounding upon, worrying about, blaming, shaming, and focusing on Olivia’s and Will’s histories.

I kept reading, though, because I was intrigued enough to care about the outcome. (Okay, I skimmed a little, but still…)

Then, I got to the end of this 400+ page book, and, WHAT? Both the main plot and subplot end on major cliffhangers. Absolutely nothing is resolved. Nothing! Well, the “who” in the whodunit is figured out, but we mostly knew who it was anyway because all arrows pointed there from the beginning. So the “who” is confirmed, which is much different than being resolved, and the cliffhangers scream that we need yet another 400+ pages to do anything about the situation.

So, if you plan to read this book, I recommend waiting for book two first, unless you really love cliffhangers.

The first book in a new series Rockwell and Decker by author and forensic psychologist Ellery Kane, Watch Her Vanish gives us a murder mystery with classic thriller elements. Olivia Rockwell is the chief criminal psychologist working at the Crescent Bay State Prison. She's returned to Fog Harbour, California for family reasons, out of concern for her younger sister. When female employees of CBSP start turning up dead and the manner of death points to an incarcerated serial killer named Drake Devere, Olivia is certain that the crimes cannot be committed by him. He's in prison, after all. Though he did write a bestseller about a serial killer (profits donated to a women's shelter) so could he have inspired a copycat? When she starts to fear for the life of her sister Emily, her pursuit of the truth takes on greater urgency. Haunted by her own family's dark history, Olivia joins forces with a brooding Fog Harbor homicide detective, Will Decker, trying to protect the women working at the prison and unravel the mystery of a killer before he kills again.

Watch Her Vanish is a fast-paced murder mystery. The relationship between Olivia and Will is tinged with an element of romance that I found a little distracting given the seriousness of the backdrop of all the women being killed. Some aspects of the murders (audio recordings, for example) were deeply creepy. Although there was a promise to keep things platonic for the future, it was clearly left in doubt they will. Additionally, the relationship between Olivia and Will felt sophomoric at times. Some of Olivia's actions or thoughts almost belie the level of training she has attained, which felt odd coming from this author. Scenes near the end, with her unknowingly carrying an unloaded gun in a high-risk situation, just felt unbelievable to me. Additionally, the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, which may frustrate some readers who are used to nice wrap-ups. While the murder mystery may be solved, that doesn't mean the killer isn't still out there, hooking the reader for Kane's next installment of Rockwell and Decker.

CW: murder, kidnapping, violence, rape references, decapitation references

I received a digital review copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a gripping and highly entertaining thriller and the excellent start of a promising series.
I loved Olivia, a very interesting and well thought woman, and think the cast of characters is fleshed out.
The setting is well described and it felt like you were there.
The plot is tightly knitted and full of twists and turns. It kept me guessing and the solution came as a surprise.
I can't wait to read the next installment.
It's highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Watch Her Vanish by Ellery Kane is the beginning of a shiny brand new series which features Doctor Olivia Rockwell, a criminal Psychologist and Detective Will Decker and it is set in Fog Harbour, California.
In order to care for her younger sister Olivia has had to return to Fog Harbour and she is in charge of the MHU (Mental Health Unit) at Cresent Bay State Prison. Detective Will Decker has moved from San Francisco P.D to hopefully sort his career and get back on track. They are both keeping secrets close to their chest. Olivia is truly horrified when a workmate of hers is found garrotted and with her clothing messed with, Olivia realises the M.O is from a patient of hers, Drake Devere and he is locked up, this creates more confusion for her. Will is the one who got Devere behind bars, so has his own personal history with this man. One of the most dangerous prisoners they have in Olivia 's Unit. He murdered five women and is in the best place for everybodies safety. Then a kitchen supervisor, Laura Ricci is found murdered and again, all evidence points towards Devere but how is it possible when the man is locked up in a max security prison?
Well! What a story! This is one of them books that you can't put down, the author has perfectly created a killer thriller you could say. I found this book to be a high tension read, with adrenaline coursing throughout. The very fact that this is an investigation that is almost a race against the clock to stop the murders makes it a fantastic read, every lead needs to be hunted down and microscopically checked so they can, without a doubt, get the right person.
The characters are all interesting and all committed to get the culprit bang to rights. A really promising start to a new series, can't wait to see where it takes Olivia and Will, I can see something glimmering on the horizon for them.
A brilliantly fast-paced, action packed story that is full to the brim with intrigue and suspense. The twists are great too, not predictable and they keep you on your toes throughout.I was dying to reach the end and find out if the team would catch their man or woman of course! A book that hooked me from the first chapter and managed to keep me there till the end.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the copy of the book for my review today.

I love a police procedural and love a series - but I am not on board with this one! I found it really hard to get into and really hard to stick with! I would read a couple of pages and then something else would pull my interest! I can’t put my finger on whether it was the writing or the characters - but it just wasn’t for me! I would maybe give book number 2 a chance, but there are so many phenomenal series out there that the bar is set very high.

Book Description

The beam from the lighthouse slices through the dawn sky as she runs down the rocky stairway to the beach. She tries to take it all in—the waves crashing against the cliffs, the whip of salt grass in the wind—before finally dragging her eyes down to the innocent girl’s blonde hair, strewn across the bottom step like seaweed…

Returning home to Fog Harbor, California, to be closer to her little sister, Olivia Rockwell is struggling to adjust to life in a town so small she can hardly breathe. That is, until the sound of a scream leads her to the body of a local teacher in the shallows nearby. All the evidence points to Olivia’s most threatening criminal psychology patient, Drake, who is safely locked up behind bars…

Convinced of Drake’s innocence—and desperate to believe in the system that’s keeping her murderer father in prison and away from her sister—Olivia gets to work on her own suspect list. All her life she’s run towards trouble, but this time she’s treading on the toes of Detective Will Decker, whose past mistakes mean this case is his last chance to make amends.

Then a second woman’s body is discovered, strangled while out on an evening jog. The strip of blue material used to choke her implicates Drake once again, forcing Will to admit he needs Olivia’s special talent for understanding the minds of killers. It’s clear more innocent women will die if they don’t get one step ahead of the murders, and Olivia knows she will need her estranged father’s help to get close to Drake.

But when Olivia’s profile leads them to believe Drake could be masterminding murders from within the prison walls, a message written on a scrap of paper found in the latest victim’s car leads them to a terrifying realization: Olivia’s little sister will be next…

An addictive and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night. Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot and Mary Burton.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Watch Her Vanish' by Ellery A. Kane .

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 9th October 2020

This is the first book that I have read by this author. It is the first book in the 'Rockwell and Decker' series.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful and colourful cover and interesting sounding blurb. The write up also stated that is perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliott. I am a big fan of both so I am interested to see if this book loves up to their standards. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 83 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in California, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Criminal psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker. I enjoy books written in third person as it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters.

What a gripping start to what promises to be a fantastic new series!! This book was very well written with various settings which suited the storyline and all we're very well described as we're the characters. I enjoyed the clippings that were well placed throughout giving us a view if what the outside world are seeing as well as more information on some of the prisoners.

The storyline itself was quite a unique one and filles with action, crime and drama which kept me reading until late at night and on the edge of my seat. There were loads of red herrings throughout. I did have a suspicious feeling that the oero was involved but I would never have guessed at what was actually going on. It was very well done.

Excellent strong characters and I enjoyed that there was a strong female lead in Olivia and I also really liked Will and JD's characters. I loved that there was some humour in between to lighten things up a little and I look forward to reading more about the characters. I also enjoyed watching the relationships develop between characters and am interested to see where they all lead.

Overall an action packed and suspense filmed crime thriller that will keep you on edge and guessing throughout.

Genres covered include Romance Novel, Thriller, Mystery, Psychological Thriller, Crime Fiction, Hardboiled, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Police Procedural and Medical Thriller.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as anyone looking to start a new action packed series.

441 pages.

This book is 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 4 /5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Author Bio

Forensic psychologist by day, novelist by night, Ellery Kane has been writing--professionally and creatively--for as long as she can remember. Just like many of her main characters, Ellery loves to ask why, which is the reason she became a psychologist in the first place. Real life really is stranger than fiction, and Ellery's writing is often inspired by her day job. Evaluating violent criminals and treating trauma victims, she has gained a unique perspective on the past and its indelible influence on the individual. And she's heard her fair share of real life thrillers.

Ellery lives in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, a picturesque setting that provides the backdrop for many of her novels. If you don't find Ellery interviewing murderers behind prison walls or pecking away at her latest novel, she is probably at the gym landing a solid jab-cross to a punching bag; riding bicycles with her special someone; or enjoying a movie the old-fashioned way--at the theater with popcorn and Milk Duds.

Ellery was previously selected as one of ten semifinalists in the MasterClass James Patterson Co-Author Competition, and she recently signed a three book deal with Bookouture for her new Rockwell and Decker mystery thriller series.

Watch Her Vanish by Ellery A. Kane is the first in the Rockwell & Decker series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Information:

Olivia Rockwell is a Criminal Psychologist working at Crescent Bay State Prison, in her hometown of Fog Harbor, California.  Her father is in another prison, serving a life sentence.  Detective Will Decker moved to Fog Harbor after his brother was convicted of shooting a woman, ending up in prison because Will turned him in.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Fog Harbor may have a serial killer on the loose, and women are dying.

All evidence  points to Drake Devere, who is serving life without parole for murdering five women.  However, since the murders are occurring outside the prison, it seems unlikely that he is sneaking out at night to kill them.  But evidence is mounting.

Although Olivia is Drake's psychologist, and she has been convinced of his innocence, she is starting to doubt her own thoughts.  When it appears that the Oaktown Boys, a white supremacist motorcycle gang, may be involved, Olivia is nervous.  Her father was part of that gang, and although her sister Emily is sure he is reformed, Olivia is not so sure.

Decker and his partner JB seem to disagree as to who the killer is, but at least they are starting to work together better.  As they dig deeper, and more women die, it becomes obvious that they are missing a piece or two of the puzzle.

Meanwhile, Decker and Olivia are getting closer than either of them expect.

My Opinions:

This was a really good start to a new series.  The plot was good, and there were a lot of suspects.

I liked both the main characters, and it is easy to see that their background and family will continue to torment them in future books.  Often in these books we see flawed characters, but in this case it is more their families that are flawed.  JB grew on me, but that was about it.  I didn't like any of the other characters, including Olivia's sister, who I found very annoying,

Even with 400 pages, it was a fairly fast read, with a number of red herrings that sent the reader in some crazy directions.  I did suspect the perpetrator, but was not positive.

Although I'm not a romance reader, I actually didn't mind the budding relationship between the two main characters.

The only real problem I had with the book is that it ended with a cliff-hanger.  I think there are better ways for an author to ensure you read their next book wiithout resorting to this tactic.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Psychopaths are smart and that's the dangerous thing. The story is really good at showing how subtle and meticulous a psychopath works his way into the, oh so willing, ”victims”.

There’s a serial killer loose going after women who work at the local prison, and the prime suspect is a prisoner who is locked away for life. So how is he escaping, in order to commit these crimes, who is helping him, or is there a copy cat set on making him look guilty.

Olivia also works at this prion, and is the psychologists to many inmates, including Drake Devere. Olivia knows him well, but how is it that the main suspect of these new crimes is locked away already. Olivia helps out detective Will Decker to try to profile the killer, but when your profile doesn’t match the evidence it’s hard to work well together. Complex histories of both Olivia and Will have the potential for a long and interesting series following these two.

I liked this book overall, however it took me ages to read. I found myself thinking it was dragging on and taking forever for anything to happen. The ending was done well. Quick and right to the point with a lot of action to keep you entertained. I felt like I was reading a screenplay for a movie. I look forward to reading more from Kane in regards to these characters.

I really liked Watch Her Vanish. Another great mystery from this Author, I have read a few of her books and they are thrilling. This murder mystery was gripping and very exciting. An edge of your seat read that had me scared and guessing until the end. I enjoyed Rockwell and Decker's characters. The story is interesting and the characters well thought out. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

I give Watch Her Vanish 4 stars for its thrilling read.
I would recommend this book to Mystery Thriller Fans.

Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via netgalley. If you are a regular reader of my blog or reviews you will know I love a crime story so I was excited to start a new one with a new to me author.

The first thing I have to say about this book is that is very disturbing. I read quite a lot of crime books but this one really got under my skin. The manipulation and the secrets in this one really get inside your head. Let’s say I’m glad I’m not living on my own because I think I’d have to sleep with the lights on for a while after this one!

Ellery does such a good job of keeping you guessing throughout the whole book. I was constantly on the edge of my seat not know who might be killed next or who the killer was.

I really like the newspaper clippings in between the story. I like little unique touches like this. It helps to make a book stand out.

As well as the case there’s the backgrounds of our two main characters Olivia and Will. These two have quite the stories to tell and I look forward to unpacking them more as we continue the series.

Watch her vanish is a police procedural set in a high-security prison. Dr Olivia Rockwell is a prison psychologist. The day she discovers the body of her colleague, Bonnie Macmillan, everything changes in her life!

Det. William Decker has moved from San Francisco and has a past he prefers to keep under the rug.

Det. Decker and his partner JB started investigating the case of Bonnie Macmillan. She was missing for a few days before they found her dead. The case has received too much attention from the media and also from the residents of Fog Harbour. While both the detectives are untangling the case, they come across another body, Laura. She also worked in the same prison. It appears to be more than just coincidence!

Decker and Rockwell come together to resolve the case, and before more bodies show up.

The murder takes place in Crescent Bay prison. It is not a straightforward job to work in a prison. It puts pressure and; the job needs also need patience and are taxed, on the mind.

Olivia Rockwell is a Stanford graduate and has worked with the FBI. As the coroner, Chet describes her “she is a big deal”. Olivia has created a wall around to protect herself and her sister, Emily. She also works in the same prison. Olivia keeps her childhood and family history a secret. She is a strong woman and is cordial with her fellow employees. Yet, the readers will find her detached.

Det. Decker complemented Olivia. He does not have much company other than his orange tabby cat, Cy. After work, back at home, he talks and shares his thoughts with Cy.

The narrative is set in Fog Harbour city, a small town in California. It has the Crescent Bay prison

which houses the notorious criminals. Handling and being in such a job can be heavy on the psyche.

The author has done excellent research given most of the scenes are written in jail. The author did an admirable job while describing the prison, or people and their feelings. She abreast with the central theme of the book. The readers can enjoy it in her writing.

The ending of the book takes the reader by surprise. The book edged on a few usual cliches, but the author with subtlety avoided them. The pace is apt and becomes the edge of a thriller towards the ending.

Even though Olivia and Decker are portrayed as intelligent people, but, there were times the reader might see them making irrational decisions.

Overall, Watch her Vanish is a good police procedural and its ending suggests the reader will enjoy more of these books. Recommended for crime fiction fans.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Let me be completely honest here: this book was amazing. Watch Her Vanish is a book about a Criminal Psychologist written by a Forensic Psychologist! So basically this author (Ellery Kane) knows what she’s talking about.

The book has a great beginning that really grabbed me and drew me in. Main character Olivia Rockwell has returned to California to keep an eye on her young sister, Emily. She is the head psychologist of the Crescent Bay State Prison where one of her most violent patients is under suspicion for murder. He is an interesting character to read and I was always questioning his manipulative and slimy ways. Then there is Homicide Detective William Decker. He is in the process of getting his career back on track and, of course, isn’t too keen on Olivia at first. But like any good psychological thriller, there are many tensions, twists, and thrills. I certainly enjoyed the book and would love to see what the author comes up with next for these character.

**Did Not Finish**

As a lover of books, and especially thrillers, it's painful for me to make the decision that a book just isn't for me and give up on it. This one has several of the right ingredients for a good thriller: murders; atmospheric setting; troubled protagonists. But none of those have interested me enough to keep on reading past what I found annoying:

Clumsy writing: as if the author is working too hard to be original: For example: "In the scrutinous glare of his headlights..." That one threw me right out of the story. Is there such a word as 'scrutinous?'

Stereotypical, rigid characters: professionals with troubled pasts they haven't worked through: 'That's the thing about the past. You can hang up, but it always calls back.' The hints about these backstories are befuddling at times. And Rockwell and Decker have one of those annoying love/hate relationships that you know is going to end in bed, so get on with it already!

But the clincher to stop reading came when I read in other reviews that the mystery does not reach a conclusion in this book but carries on to the next in the series...No! Save the cliffhangers for the plot of a TV series, please.

I received an arc from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Sorry it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I’m usually late to the party on thriller series, so it was nice starting a series from the beginning right when it’s being published. While I figured out the responsible party as soon as this character was introduced, it was still a suspenseful crime thriller, which answered the main whodunit for this book but left you hanging for the bigger crime.

Olivia Rockwell, a criminal psychologist who is still trying to come to terms with witnessing her own incarcerated father murder someone when Olivia was just a little girl, takes on the worst of the worst patients/criminals at the prison in Fog Harbor where no one can be trusted and everyone is always on edge. Her worst patient is Drake Devere, a serial killer who avoided the death penalty thanks to a previous deal and who has turned his previous crimes into a best selling crime book series. Detective Will Decker has fled to the police force in Fog Harbor to try to get back some of his anonymity after a family scandal that is alluded to throughout the book. Suddenly, female employees at the prison start being found brutally murdered, and Olivia might be next. Olivia and Dec must fight their obvious chemistry to try to identify the killer before it’s too late.

This book, while enjoyable to read because I liked Olivia and Deck’s characters, definitely followed the detective crime thriller script, and if you’ve read a lot of these, it’s really not hard to figure out who is killing these women. But, that being said, while Olivia was rather naive given her professional and personal background, I was still rooting for her to make it out alive. And, I really like the partnership between Deck and JB, the fuddy-duddy older detective Deck is partnered with who keeps his secrets and watches his back even as he insults and teases him. While it’s obviously a secondary relationship to the Rockwell and Decker one named in the series title, it seems to be the most realistic one and really creates a warmer tone to the book.

I also like that the author set herself up to possibly go several different directions with the future books in this series. I don’t want to give away the ending, but it was satisfying even with the cliffhangers. (Yes, plural.)

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. It has not influenced my opinion.
