I am so happy to see that books like this one are being published. It allows kids to find LGBTQ representation from an early age and also gives them a chance to have role models representing them while growing up. I knew most of these already but it's still good to know there will be a generation who has a chance to get to know them.
Absolutely great and child-friendly!
This is a fantastic resource for kids. The biographies are short, but they encourage readers to find strengths in everyone. They also leave enough out to lead to further research. One thing I like is that, if the person is deceased, it doesn't discuss how or when. This celebrates the person's life instead of pinpointing on their deaths, as we often do with people like Harvey Milk (who is included). I also think this book is a textbook in intersectionality, not only by providing role models from all different parts of the LGBTQIA spectrum but also multiple races, ages, religions, and generations. All children's library collections need this book.
This self-described "rainbow of biographies" is a wonderful book with a beautiful cover that would make a great addition to any bookshelf. I love the thought of this book on the shelves of libraries, schools, and homes, serving as an inviting window to look through and learn about the lives of notable current and historical LGBTQ Americans. It was fun to read about some of my favorite heroes such as Sally Ride, Sharice Davids, and James Baldwin, and perhaps even better to learn for the first time about many other amazing LGBTQ Americans who have made our country and our world a better place.
This is a great introduction for kids to some of the individuals who shaped our history and just happened to identify as LGBTQ+! The short descriptions of their work would be easy lessons for homeschool or for teachers who want to ensure these icons are not lost in their students' education.
I thought that this was a lovely book and I loved the images used!
The book was set out really well and I loved the little section that was given to each person. The only thing that I would have liked was maybe a comment as to how the person identified themselves so that children could see that there are people with the same or similar feelings to their own but then I also fully get why the author did not want to use labels too.
The book is set perfectly for the target audience, fun, enlightening and informative and a great spring board to go off and read more about these fascinating characters and their impact on the LGBTQ communities around the world – it is 5 stars from me for this one!
An excellent introduction to real-life LGBTQ people, branching across history and modern faces. The blend of colors, brief descriptions, and photographs make it very readable. My one note is that I wish there was more identification as to gay/lesbian/bisexual. While labels are very fluid and may not always apply, it's also important for children to find themselves in their fellow humans.
This was a pretty standard and fine rundown of some celebrities that are part of the LGBT community. It would be a good introduction to kids feeling alone in their identity.
This book is a fantastic introduction for anyone wanting to learn more about the community of LGBTQ people in America. The books is well researched and contains such a great variety of people from different industries that it’s a perfect view into the wide reaching lives of the LGBTQ community past and present. I particularly loved the inclusion of a glossary and website links at the end, which will be really helpful for anyone new to the LGBTQ community or anyone who is an ally wanting to find out more.
These 25 mini biographies are a good start for children of any age. My favorite aspect is a line in each about what each individual is proud of. Emphasizes that sexuality and gender identity are an important part of a life story, but not the most important part.
It's important for children to have role models, especially role models which are similar to them. This is the idea behind this book. It presents figures of prominent people form the lgbtqia+ community. I'm glad that the author used recent examples instead of going too far back in history.
Each biography includes a page of text, a colorful sentence (something to remember this person by) and a picture. It doesn't o it the difficult topics, like internment camps for Japanese Americans.
What's important, the people chosen for the book are not only celebrities, but also scientists, human rights activists, and artists. The book also offers a glossary, a time-line, and a list of more important igbtqia+ people, and therefore, it's a great resource for parents and educators.
