What a fun and enjoyable read. I loved the plot of the book. It has been something I have always wondered about. If I would have taken another road in life, where would I be now. The Road Not Taken kept me interested throughout and until the end.
The Road Not Taken begins harmlessly enough at the cosmetics counter of an upscale Manhattan department store but within pages, Rubin sweeps the reader into a labyrinth that twists, turns, and climbs through the time/space continuum, embracing Egyptian gods and goddesses, Nazi bullies, real world lovers and netherworld villains. Along the way, each crossroad brings Rubin's protagonista closer to her own fulfillment as a woman, heroine, and wonder-filled citizen of the world.
this was a really unique read, the characters were great and I really enjoyed getting to know this universe.
Admittedly, The Road Not Taken is a bit out of my wheelhouse, but the idea of this woman visiting various times and places intrigued me. That said, I think the idea of this book was terrific, but the delivery fell short. The problem is that it all just felt like a little too much. I get the journey of self-discovery, but there was so much going on that it didn't feel like anything was properly fleshed out, including the characters. Maybe this one could've done with a few less visits so more time could be devoted to the others, or maybe the book just needed more attention to detail and more time with everything going on. Either way, that's not what I found here, and a lack of connection to both character and story was the result. I feel like there could've been a really good story here, and maybe I just missed it, but it didn't work for me.
Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book.
I was really excited by the premise of the book and it has some excellent ideas and themes within, but for me it just seemed a bit disjointed. The narrative flow was all over the place, the characters seemed pretty flat and those who had some dimension to them were objectively unlikable. The rape storyline could have been handled with a touch more sensitivity also.
That’s not to say that I think the book was terrible, I can see why people other people have enjoyed it-the themes within are interesting, and the Van Gogh heist was a great idea. I just feel like the multiverse aspect needed to be a bit more fleshed out and we could have spent a little more time getting used to a time and place before jumping to the next one.
This was a great book, I liked the plot and everything, although there were some parts of it that didn't made it interesting at all. But it's still a good book
This story was tagged as sci-fi and the synopsis seems to be hinting to multiverse that's why I downloaded this book from netgalley.
We have Deborah, who one day met someone who looks a lot like her and opened a new world for her. It is really hard to describe this book because on my perspective it is a combination of a lot of topics.
I'll just mention all the topics I can remember that was discussed or touched upon on this book. This book has mythology, arts, history, slavery, feminism, religion and environmental awareness on it. I'm sure I missed some things but these are the ones I can remember. I'm not a fan of books/stories that tries to squeeze in a lot of themes in one book. It makes me feel disconnected to the story.
What's more unfortunate is that I did not connect at all on Deborah, our main character. I also did not like any of the secondary characters. I guess I only like the pets. I hated Set sooo much.😡
On some parts of the book, I felt like the tone of the book was 'preaching' and that made me uncomfortable. I do appreciate the effort on the research of the different topics mentioned on the book. I do see what the author is trying to convey.
I guess this one just didn't work for me.
***Thanks for netgalley, the publisher and author for making this available for review.***
You certainly have to suspend disbelief to fully embrace this book.So original and totally unique ,and totally outside the box.I would think it may not be to everyone's taste ,but if it is you will have a mind boggling experience when you read it.I do like author's whose imagination knows no bounds and this is certainly true with this writer.Pretty amazing book really.
I adore this book! Susan Rubin's The Road Not Taken was a fun, thoughtful romp. The author very much has her own voice but it could also be a joyous, philosophical, and playful mix of Alice Hoffman and Tom Robbins.
It was a good read about Isis and the other gods. Many twist and turns that I enjoyed reading in this book.
