This is my first A.F Carter book and won't certainly be my last. All of Us is definitely a compelling read.
This was undoubtedly one of the most unique storylines I have come across for quite some time.
The book explores a somewhat difficult topic, and I think the author has wrote this story sensitively and with a great amount of detail.
All Of Us is a thriller focusing on a woman who becomes a suspect in the murder of her Father who sexually abused her as a child. The problem is that Carolyn has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and has 6 different personalities who don't share memories or experiences. None of the personalities knows if any of the other ones has committed the murder and they have to try to work out how to communicate and work together to figure out what happened and how to deal with the police. Add to that the fact that Carolyn is being assessed by Psychiatrists, a Therapist and a Social Worker to determine whether she should be committed to a psychiatric hospital or whether she can function safely in society and the whole thing just becomes crazy and stressful.
Part of me thought this sounded like a great and unique thriller and then part of me was slightly dubious as to how it would turn out. The problem is that a lot of fiction that features characters with sever mental health issues end up not being written very well. It's hard for non-own voices authors to understand and portray these illnesses realistically without relying heavily on stereotypical views. I have no idea personally whether DID was portrayed well in this book but I can say that it didn't come across as too unrealistic or over exaggerated.
The book was a pretty quick read but for some reason it just didn't quite grab me. It ended up just being average and that's possibly because with Carolyn switching personalities so much I couldn't quite connect with her or understand her.
Thank you to Netgalley and Head of Zeus for the arc of this book.
3 star read, this was a good read, well written and an fast read, this was a thrilling book, had me in suspense.. but got confused at times as there are 6 protagonists in this book in whom share 1 body! due to what caroline pysche due to childhood abuse.. but overall a great read
⭐⭐⭐
A good and interesting read!
I would recommend this to everyone who loves a good story with captivating characters! Definitely a good read!
This really excited me from the blurb.
Unfortunately it didn’t work out. It is very hard to read and you will have to keep jumping back and forward.
Not for me
I liked the concept of the book and Carolyn suffering from multiple personalities and the way that was explored. However, I found some parts rather uncomfortable to read and struggled to finish it.
I really thought this was a great premise for a second and found the first few chapters excellent. But I felt the book fell away after this. I am sorry not for me.
‘All of Us’ can be best summarised as; strong start, weak middle, bad ending.
Initially, I was gripped at what seemed to be a uniquely well thought out portrayal of DID, a complex mental disorder which is often misunderstood and poorly explained in literature. Each ‘sibling’ as they call themselves was distinct and well written, and the plot seemed like it would be really interesting.
However, after a good start, I began to lose interest in the middle, where everything seemed to drag a bit and become a bit repetitive. The characters also became a lot more cliches, and everything culminated in an ending that just wasn’t good enough to make reading the book feel worthwhile.
My main issue with it is largely down to the cliched portrayal of DID. Rather that being based on scientific explorations of the condition, ‘All Of Us’ instead felt like the author had watched Sybil and Split and used both to create a caricature of what the condition is. The ‘twist’ ending also didn’t make a lot of sense, and felt thrown in to create an OMG moment.
While I wanted to love this book, sadly I just didn’t. It was ok enough to begin within, but I quickly lost interest and ending up skimming most of the second half. Sadly not one I can recommend.
Disclaimer - I was fortunate enough to receive an advance reading copy of this book from the publisher in conjunction with NetGalley. This has not affected my review in any way, and all opinions are my own
This was a thrilling drama about a protagonist with multiple personalities. I found it to be a very interesting premise, but I also found it confusing at times. It was written well and was a good read overall.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this E-book to review via Netgalley.
Carolyn is a very complex person, a victim of horrific abuse she has shielded herself and is now made up of 6 personalities sharing the same body. All of them are different and when her father is killed which personality could have done it?
Unfortunately this book was not for me. I just didn’t enjoy it despite it being written well and an interesting story I wasn’t hooked. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is a weird reading experience. You can’t read it took fast or you’ll mix up the characters. I found it fascinating but not really believable. That doesn’t really matter, though, in the context of an interesting mix of characters against an unusual premise.
A thrilling drama about a woman developing multiple personalities following childhood trauma. The storyline kept it me on my toes. Highly recommended!
Carolyn has DID, or what used to be called Multiple Personality Syndrome. She has developed six distinct personalities to cope with the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. He’s been in jail for almost thirty years, but now he’s being released and Carolyn and all the beings he created are ready to confront him. When Carolyn’s father turns up dead, Carolyn is the prime suspect, did Carolyn or one of her alters kill Hank? This mystery os enlivened by a truly unique premise, intense and fascinating
All of Us has an original and engaging plot with it's diverse and exciting cast of characters keeps you turning the pages to unravel just who committed the murder.
The only thing that would have made this even better is if the different characters were fleshed out more,as it felt as a reader you knew some better than others,
