This is an interesting book answering some questions you have had, but maybe some questions you didn’t realize you wanted answered. There is a history to Thanksgiving we have heard, but there is more to it too. This book discusses the history of eating turkey on Thanksgiving. It does a fantastic and fun job. You will learn about how historical figures including Charles Dickens and Abraham Lincoln helped. The history behind it is amazing. This is a well-written book including interesting information. It is a great family book designed for children. The pencil sketches are colorful and not your typical book illustrations, yet they work wonderfully.
This book was absolutely adorable! The story was informative and great for kids. The illustrations were wonderful and engaging.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a sweet children's book. It was really interesting to learn more about the history of Thanksgiving traditions and I'm really glad I got to read this.
An entertaining and informative book. I’m from the UK and know little about Thanksgiving and the turkey tradition. I enjoyed the illustrations too.
With Thanksgiving right around the corner this is a fun educational book on the history of why we eat Turkey on Thanksgiving. With actual historical information this is a fun way to learn why this tradition is one that we observe. Paired with cute illustrations & humor this is a fun book to have for the holiday season.
Good book explaining about Thanksgiving! I am from the UK and although I had obviously heard of it, I didn't have a clue of any of the history behind it.
The illustrations were really cute as they were done as proper sketches rather than as a cartoon which is unusual in a book.
Great book - fab for slightly older children.
This book gives insight into the turkey dinner. I am from India , we don't have Thanksgiving day. So learning about different holiday and the reason about particular choice of dinner was insightful. Thanks netgalley for the review copy.
Good book explaining Thanksgiving to children. Its rather short but the illustrations are nice and the text rhymes which children like. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I received an advance copy of, Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving?, by Nicholas Scarpino. This is a cute book for kids, there are some fun facts, and cute drawings.
A book of information delivered through rhyme, with lovely coloured pencil sketches making a pleasant change from more sophisticated illustrations. Bound to spur interest in younger audiences (and perhaps those like me, British born and bred, whose only familiarity with Thanksgiving is through American TV shows and films), it explores the historic association between turkeys and Thanksgiving in a simple but effective way.
**I received an e-ARC from NetGalley for an honest review**
The artwork was cute, but I would have like the colors to be a little bit bolder, as it would have been a little easier on my eyes to look at. It seemed done with crayon maybe?
The story was nice, but some of the rhymes seems a little forced and clunky.
Overall, it was a nice little picture book, something I would buy for my young nieces or nephews.
Why do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving has the cutest illustrations. The book is cute, short and to the point. Children love books to be very short.
"Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving" by Nicholas Scarpino is a new edition to the Thanksgiving picture book library. Why do we eat turkey on Thanksgiving? Why not fish or pizza? Kids ask this every year, and some families do observe the holiday in different ways. This cute picture book answers the mystery question and gives us a bit of history as well.
This is a cute children's book explaining how turkey because the meat of choice at Thanksgiving. The illustrations are very cute and childlike, they add greatly to the story. The history lesson starts with the very first Thanksgiving, but states the Pilgrims might not have had turkey for that first Thanksgiving feast. The story continues with Ben Franklin wanting to make the turkey the national bird instead of an eagle! Can you imagine! Maybe the idea of turkey was formed with Bob Cratchit sent one to Tiny Tim. Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for many years for a national holiday and finally Lincoln declared after the Civil War that a day of Thanksgiving would be observed. It was Mrs Hale's picture of a Thanksgiving feast with a beautiful roasted turkey that gave us the idea. This is a perfect book for children of all ages to enjoy during the holiday season
A family project of love. 86-year-old grandma created the simple illustrations that accompany the rhyming text penned by her grandson. Here is a short history of how turkey came to be the celebratory bird of Thanksgiving dinner (and how Thanksgiving came to be a national holiday). Turkey illustrations fill the pages, showing up as people. Even Ben Franklin is pictured as a turkey in his famous kite-flying scene. (You'll have to read the book to understand the connection.) A cute story to read at holiday time.
Was a cute book especially if made for the authors family. I am not sure however how accurate "some" of the information is. I do find it interesting how the importance of the turkey in country was through time. I also would have liked more professional illustrations for the public but, that is my taste.
The illustrations in this book are simply beautiful. It's a sweet story however it wouldn't be suitable to read to my Nursery class as I live in the UK. I can imagine American children enjoying it however. I know in the UK we eat turkeys for Christmas each year and ive got no clue why. So this was a nice insight into why they are eaten for Thanksgiving.
With the words of the book in rhyme and accompanied by delightful illustrations this would make a great present for kids and families whether they've ever wondered about turkey and thanksgiving or not.
If you want an indepth investigation into Thanksgiving and it's poultry connections then this probably isn't the book for you but as an interesting tale to delight the children it hits the mark
I'm not American, neither have I been to America but I enjoyed this book both as a source of information and as an opportunity to read to the kids and share conversations about both the narrative and the pictures.

This book was an adorable history of Thanksgiving and why we have the traditions we do. I especially liked that every other line rhymed. The illustrations were nicely done by the author's 86 year old grandmother and added wonderful touch to the story. I would purchase this one for my classroom. Nicely done!
When you read that an adult grandson wrote this book and asked his grandmother to illustrate it, it bumps up the likability for sure. Overall this book is a cute and informative rhyming overview about why we eat turkey for Thanksgiving. It doesn't go into too much detail, so it is good for younger readers. It would be a cute Thanksgiving book to add to your shelves.
