I loved the chaotic art style and story of this one. I think the target audience will really enjoy this and have a blast with Aster!
A fun and silly adventure book. Good for fans of Hilda or other adventure GNs. I did like that I was able to get through this just fine without having read the first book.
Aster & the Mixed-up magic was very similar to the Hilda books/cartoon but with a world that was a little less gentle & bright. It was a cute little story in a cottage core style. I liked the dog, but I feel like Aster was likable just not as much so as Hilda. If Hilda books or other similar graphic novels are popular at your library, this is a great purchase.
The kids at my library love this series and I can see why, not only is the art beautiful the story is awsome. Thank you allowing me to get this ARC
This title is strongly reminiscent, if not derivative, of the Hilda series. It's just strong enough to stand on its own, though.
Loved the magic and adventure of the story, but the illustration style feels unfinished and is not my favorite.
I love Aster's story so much so this continuation was super fun and just as joyful as the first story.
These continuing adventures of Aster are a delight! Favorite friends return and we meet new friends along the way. The artwork is so colorful and fun and there is a wonderful sly humor throughout. Both young and adult readers and of graphic novels will find lots to love in this series!
Middle grade graphic novel for fans of "Adventure Time" looking for a gentler read. In this second volume of the series, Aster expect things to calm down after saving her entire valley and becoming the reincarnation of a season. But, as they say, great power comes with great responsibilities! Now it's up to Aster to defend the land from a range of absurd enemies, some of whom could became her next allies. At the same time, she has to decide if her brother and parents can handle the truth of her magical abilities, especially her scientist mom. Readers who haven't picked up the first volume will be fine jumping in, but the narrative of this particular book is uneven. Regardless, child readers will be delighted.
This book is a treasure! It captures the same magic as the first and adds even more information to the lore of the world! Like always the images and layout were stellar with the color combinations, drool worthy.
Aster and her magical friends are back to: vanquish the Dumbacabra, fight a Goatzilla, and save the world.
This second installment in the Aster series seemed a little more jumbled and disjointed than the first. I still enjoyed it overall, but I'm not sure these stories will hold up as much for my students who really loved the first book. It could be because I received a not completely finished ARC that this felt a little off, but overall it was just okay.
I love this continuous of Aster's adventures! This is a great series for kids who like Adventure Time and related cartoons on TV or similar comics.
I love the Aster, the main character in Aster and the Mixed- Up Magic. She is instantly likeable. I felt like this graphic novel jumped around a lot and made it hard to follow at times. If you enjoy graphic novels, I recommend giving this one a try.
Aster and the Mixed-Up Magic is a cute graphic novel that will pull readers in. I love the illustrations and the humor in the book. My students will love this book once I purchase it for checkout in my classroom.
This is a very fun and funny sequel to Aster and the Accidental Magic with a set of two (and a half) stories in one. Aster must fight a band of wily sheep led by a Dumbacabra, finding The Chestnut Knights, and re-forging the Crown of Season after the trickster Rapscallion from escapes his imprisonment in the valley. The pacing is a bit between the first and second adventure where the first adventure had a lot of silly, quick plot-points and the second, forging of the Crown of Seasons, the story is a bit slower, comparatively. Overall, a very fun, quick read for those who enjoy graphic novels with adventure!
I love the Aster series so much! The art style is amazing, the characters are great, the adventures are fun; an all around great book!
Aster is so fun and adventurous! She is up for any challenge along with her talking dog Buzz and all her other friends in the valley.
Highly recommend. Kids and adults will really like this one! I hope she will have more adventures in the future!
Thank you to Thom Pico, Random House Children's, and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
Aster is an adventure somewhat reminiscent of Hilda (with a touch of Chickenhare thrown in for complexity). We are presented with a wide variety of folk-tale creatures and all sorts of magic. Aster is also balancing her role in this magical world while keeping it hidden from most of the people around her, including her mother. It should be said that this volume is a sequel, but I was a couple of pages in before that became apparent. Its easy enough to understand this book without being familiar with the first one (though I'd recommend reading them in order if you have the chance). Not only are we given sufficient context for the events of the first book, the plot of this one basically stands on it's own, only contributing small elements to the larger series plot. It's a fun adventure with a fair amount of humor and charming illustrations.
Fun, cute and a little silly this graphic novel would be good for fans of Hilda, Arthur and the Golden Rope or Over the Garden Wall. Magic and adventure with a plucky heroine, what's not to love?
Aster and the Mixed-Up Magic is a delightful sequel! It's a lighthearted and fun read. I really love the artwork.
Often I am on Netgalley looking for books to read and review and do not realize that they are the 2nd+ in a series and that was the case with this one. Aster and the Mixed-Up Magic is number two in the series and is a few stories in one book. The compellation is easy to follow even though I had not read book one, there were enough clues throughout to allow readers to understand what was going on.
This installment was fun and funny, there is adventure and magic and talking animals as well as some drama. It is geared toward a middle grade audience. Aster is magical but only half of her family knows. She has a talking dog and a fox that can also talk to her and help her along the way but often is sarcastic and choses not to. She is faced with defeating and evil sheep and other magic creatures that want to take over the human realm for themselves.
This was a cute book. While it was easy to figure out the premise from book one, I didn't feel as tied to the characters as I might have been if I had read book one. Overall, it was a fun and interesting take on magic in a middle grade graphic novel and I believe that younger audience will really enjoy it.
Review will be live on February 23, closer to release date.
