This book has been collecting dust on my NetGalley shelf for ages, and I've felt so guilty about it. But today, I learned of some of the violently racist things a Wednesday Books employee has been spouting and thought it was time to clean house on here.
I will be reviewing this book on Goodreads and Amazon at a later date since the author has absolutely nothing to do with this. But I will not be promoting any books from Wednesday Books, St. Martins Press, or other related Macmillan imprints.
Anyone who tolerates racism is not okay with me.
Its the last one (I literally almost cried realizing this would be it)
These books have taken up a huge chunk of my book life. And especially part of my blogging career. McMillan was one of the forst publishers inreally built a working g relationship with. And seeing them wrapping up was so bitter sweet.
I was dying to know what was going to happen after the end of Morning Flower though. And couldn't have been more excited to get approved to review.
And this was such a good end the series and world as a whole. It wrapped things uo in a way I couldn't have imagined being any better. And gave me all the things I hoped would come in this book.
I'm just sad it over now
"The Ever After" by Amanda Hocking is a suspenseful and engaging novel that follows Ulla Tulin as she tries to uncover the truth about her past and prevent a catastrophic event from occurring. Ulla discovers that she is part of a rare and powerful group of people called the Trylle, and the Älvolk sect is willing to exchange her for a rare flower with mystical properties. Ulla risks everything to remember the secrets of the Älvolk and prevent the catastrophic event, and in the process, she discovers that her own heritage holds the key to victory. Hocking's writing is well-crafted and immersive, with a well-developed plot and characters that keep the reader hooked until the very end. Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
I love this action packed book full of Lore. I also appreciate that you did not have to have read the other books in previous series to enjoy this book. It helps because there are hints and throw backs to the other books but you can still pick this up on the go and enjoy it without knowing anything about it.
The middle lagged a bit for me but the start and finish line more then made up for it.
An exciting end to the trilogy that set a bar very high for the next series I start. It's going to be very hard to find one as well written and thought out as the Omte Origins.
Wow, what a way to finish a series. And not just a series, but a universe! This conclusion was fantastic. We were able to learn so many things about the troll world and how everything connected together. While the previous novels in the series had a lighter tone, Ever After delves into Ulla's experiences as she was held captive by the Älvolk and its traumatic effects on her psyche. The Ever After is an action packed great concluding book to the Omte Origins Trilogy.
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book had an amazing plot, but I felt the characters were a bit hard to connect to.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
Ms Hocking has a large following at my high school library and I buy all her books. They circulate well and I rarely see them once I get them.
I honestly did not realize this was a sequel. But from what I read and could understand without reading book one, I enjoyed. The story kept me interested and intrigued and I want to go back and read books 1 and 2.
I enjoyed reading this book so much! After the ending of the previous book, I needed to know how everything was going to play out from there! And wow, was this a fantastic book, loved how everything came together! It was such a great read!
I was excited to see how this book would play out, given that Ulla and her friends don't have their memories from their time with the Älvolk. But Ulla did set up a method for her to remember. So I wanted to see how it would play out!
We mostly got all the answers that we needed by the end of book 2. But there were a few more surprises, and I really enjoyed how it all played out! There were still some parts of the history of trolls that they didn't know, and yeah, loved learning all of that!
Man, but that ending? That was just utterly epic-and heartbreaking. We actually got to be in Wendy's, Bryn, and Ulla's head for that final battle, which was a good and a bad thing. Because they were all experiencing action, and it was non-stop action. But oh, that cost! That hurt!
This was a fantastic read, and a great end to the series!
Amanda Hocking has such a huge part of my heart in her books. The Ever After is the last book in the Omte Trilogy. During this novel, Ulla struggles to uncover the events of the month that is missing from her memory.
After discovering what her "father" truly wants - Ulla must come together with her friends and protect her world from the monsters that lurk on the other side of the bridge.
Can we talk about Ulla? She is such a bad ass! I have said before - and will say again - I LOVE her! Not only because of the size representation but also for the bravery, determination, and vulnerability she shows through out the trilogy.
The characters in these books are so well done. Each one is multi-faceted! While I generally love (and root for) the villains of stories, I thoroughly despised Alvolk. I find this largely because he is such a true-to-life character - a man who uses a child by manipulation- which happens far too often in our world.
If you enjoyed the Trylle series, you will love this trilogy! I highly recommend TEA to EVERYONE!
I will be recommending this book for purchase as an addition to our school library. Thank you for the opportunity to read.

With this being the last book in the series, I was looking forward to seeing how everything ended. This series hasn't been my favorite from the beginning, but I felt like I needed to see it through since I had requested the ARCs with the hope of enjoying it as much as another series from the same author. I was kind of let down overall by the lack of character growth, but I did have some other issues with the final book in the series.
Although the second book improved marginally in my opinion, The Ever After felt like it took a huge step back. One of my main issues with this series was the characters. They were flat and I felt no connection to them at all. We never really saw any strong emotions from Ulla. She basically had two settings: happy or neutral. That's it's. There was only one time that I saw her show any other emotion in this book, but even that was brief. When Ulla herself wasn't worried about anything and seemed to take everything in stride, it was hard to invest myself emotionally in the story.
The lack of emotion aside, I still felt like Ulla wasn't involved enough in her own goals. Ulla ultimately wanted to figure out what was happening with the Alvolk but she was also supposed to be digging into her past to find clues about her parents. When it came to either, progress came painfully slow. The plot just dragged on and most of the time Ulla was just meandering around while other people either handed her information or she waited on results from something or other. It makes for a really boring story when our heroine spends most of her time thinking about her crush or waiting around instead of chasing down more leads.
Another issue regarding the plot was that it felt very repetitive and slow. I mentioned in my previous reviews for the series that it took so long to get answers to anything happening in the story (mostly in the last chapters of the book). Well, in the second book I finally thought we were getting somewhere... and then Ulla lost her memories so it just felt like a very bad remake of the first book. Not only that, but a good chunk of the information we uncovered about some of our characters ended up being inaccurate. It was honestly annoying to be essentially thrown back to square one.
And, of course, I still wasn't a fan of the romance in this one. Again, part of that was due to the flat characters that made it hard for me to connect with them as well as the fact that it seemed like insta-love from the beginning (and not in a good way). I just didn't understand how Pan and Ulla were so in love when they hardly spent any significant time together--and by that I mean length-wise as well as meaningful (emotional connection).
Sadly, there was little I enjoyed in this book until we hit the final chapters. When the ending added new character POV's (characters from her Trylle series apparently), I finally had something that got my attention. Wendy and Bryn were way more interesting than Ulla. I was actually invested in their fates and felt a connection to them. They had personalities and just popped off the page. And I'm sure fans of the Trylle series will enjoy seeing these characters again.
The ending overall, however, felt wrapped up too neatly. It really tried for that "happily ever after" (big surprise) and it just felt... forced. It was especially hard to feel any relief or sense of triumph when it was focused on the two characters I felt no connection to.
Overall, I'd have to say this series really wasn't for me. The only good thing is that it made me curious about the Trylle series but I feel like Amanda Hocking's books may be a little hit or miss for me. If you enjoyed her Trylle series though, this might be a fun series for you to check out if you're interested in revisiting the world.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have been wanting to read the finale for awhile. That last book in the origins series. This wonderfully wrapped up the series. Ulla does the trauma that she suffered while she was being held. Her father is trying to get her to remember and he is willing to put her life at risk to do so. Opening the way to the First City. There were parts of this story that put things beyond belief and it has me turning the pages as fast as I could. I wanted to know what happened and I had to know as soon as possible.
This book is so good! Amanda Hocking is one of my favorite authors, and I was 130% satisfied with Ever After. The characters are all great, and the story was intriguing. I loved learning about the histories, and seeing all of the different characters unite. This is one of my favorite fantasy universes, so I was very sad to see the book end.
My review was definitely delayed because I never realized this was a final book in the Omte series by Amanda Hocking. So I went back to read the previous two books because I was genuinely confused. I enjoyed the first two books and was excited for an epic conclusion for Ulla. Unfortunately I feel like it fell a bit flat for me. Entertaining but the ending was just too fast.
The final book in The Omte Origins, The Ever After, brings to a close the exciting series staring Ullaakuut "Ulla" Tulin. While the previous novels in the series had a lighter tone, Ever After delves into Ulla's experiences as she was held captive by the Älvolk and its traumatic effects on her psyche.
In this final story, Ulla and her friends from her time in Merella search for the mythical first city and the bridge that connects the realms. The Omte Origins series is just that, the origins of the Omte people talked about in her Trylle series. If you are familiar with the Omte series of books and the rich history that Amanda Hocking created. One of the aspects that I enjoyed in the original series was taking the idea of a troll and turning it on its ear.
Trolls have always been depicted as dirty and scary creatures, a la Harry Potter. Instead, the history of the troll people is much more complicated, nodding to both Scandanavian and Norse people. The original series touches on some of the mythos, but I am glad that Hocking took the time and detailing of this series to flesh out the ideas.
The Omte Origins story follows a naive Ulla, as she first comes to Merella for education and a chance to research her family find who abandoned her. Even with everything Ulla has been through, she has an endearing kindness that permeates her interactions with people. This draws people to her. In the previous two books, Ulla meets Dagny and Pan. Both become very important in her life but in different ways. Dagny becomes a surly sister and Pan a love interest. This basis of family helps give Ulla the stability to seek her missing family and find out what really happened.
The Ever After is a super fun conclusion to the series. It is both heartfelt and action-packed, which is par for the course for Hocking's books. They are always a good mashup. Check out this series and all of the Trylle books.
This book is great! I love Amanda Hocking and the way she tells stories! Definitely a must read!
I started reading these books back in 2015 so I reread them thinking I would need a refresher course for the characters and setting. I’m glad I did.
There were moments where I thought “They did that?!?!” When Amanda killed a beloved character. I almost through my kindle across the house I was so upset.
Don’t let that deter you though. I loved how she ended it. There were no unanswered questions. It was wrapped up in a neat little bow.
Ulla and her friends are trying to regain their memories after being captive for a month. No one can remember what happened in the last month. While trying to figure out what happened in their month of captivity, they discover some things that involves Ulla's parents and a mythical city linked to a dangerous secret socity. Ulla must face the possibility of serve consequences if her and her friends fail on their journey to discover more.
Hocking has always been a favorite author of mine. The Trylle trilogy was one of the first fantasy series I ever read and definitely the first troll books I ever read. The Omte trilogy has many layers much like Trylle and Hocking's writing is just so captivating. She has a skill for creating awesome and interesting characters and her storytelliing ability is amazing.
throughout the trilogy, Pan and Ulla's romance has been slow building and finally lands in this book.
Unlike most main characters, Ulla is not a warrior or beautiful. She's who she is and throughout the book you can watch her character develop and learn to love herself.
While the Omte Origins is connected with Hocking's other troll trilogies, you don;t have to read them to understand this one, but I highly recommend reading them!
Thank you, Netgalley and Wednesday Books for this arc in exchange for an hoonest review.
Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this book. Amanda hocking is a favorite author of mine and I was so happy to be reading this book, I loved the omte series almost more than the tryelle series. Thanks again
