This was cute, but nothing dazzling our out of the box for me. While I definitely could feel the passion and drive Mia had for ballet, and could empathize with how hard she worked to get to where she was, the actual romance aspect of the novel was dry.
If Kisses and Croissants was not marketed as a romance, I think this would have worked wonderfully. The push and pull, enemy-rivals-to-friends relationship between Mia and Aubrey was set up spectacularly and would have provided the perfect background and grit to the story if we hadn't been so focused on the romance aspect.
Overall, not a bad story, just not one I would want to re-read in the future.
Kisses and Croissants was published in April of 2021. Thank you to Random House Children's, Delacorte Press and Netgalley for the ARC.
After reading the synopsis and finding out it was for fans of AMERICAN ROYALS, I decided to request an eARC from NetGalley, and thankfully, I received a copy. Thanks, NetGalley and Delacorte Press.
Mia is off to Paris for the summer to follow her dream, which involves studying at a ballet school for the summer. She believes dancing is in her blood, as it is rumored that one of her ancestors was painted as a dancer by a famous artist. While there, she meets the son of one of her teachers, Louis. But romance was never on the agenda. Can she follow her dreams, find the rumored painting, AND fall in love?
I loved the scenery of Paris described so beautifully in the book. My favorite scenes took place outside the school when Mia would explore the town. I also loved when Louis took Mia to visit her great-aunt in the south of France. I loved watching the two leads' relationship develop.
The thing I have to say I didn't like was Mia's self-doubt that she could have both her dream and love. I was honestly shocked at the big 'problem' Mia and Louis had towards the end of the book near their last night together. Won't give away any spoilers.
For fans of travel teen romances, AMERICAN ROYALS, or Paris, grab this book. You won't regret it.

Hands down this is a great beach reads book, especially if you're a fan of *Emily in Paris*. There's cute fluffy characters, points in the book that get way too sugarly sweet, and just a lot of feel good moments. I read it way too fast and I'm not sad about it. I felt great after reading it and I think a lot of people who want a cute fluffy book will like it as well.
I wonder a lot how this book would be if we had an enemies to lovers vibe between Audrey and Mia. While Louis and Mia are adorable and perfect for this kind of book... it felt too easy. Sure there's push and pull between dance life and real life and there being more to it (yada yada yada) but, you know, sometimes we readers just want what we want.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
This book was super cute, light and fun! A nice quick summer romance. I loved the art details and the almost treasure hunt aspect. Mia and Louis were sweet. Makes me want to visit Paris!
Mia has always wanted to be a ballerina. Her dreams begin coming true when she gets invited to attend a summer class at the Paris Ballet School. She is determined to do her best with dance, but will she be too distracted by a charming French boy and her quest to find a Degas painting of her ballerina ancestor?
.
This is such a charming romance! I love that it is set in Paris. Jouhanneau has such an amazing way with words. As a reader, you learn about famous landmarks, learn a little French, gain knowledge about ballet and other fine arts, and get to know about Degas and his famous ballerina paintings. I enjoyed the rivalry between Mia and Audrey and how they helped each other become a better dancer. It kept things interesting when reading about Mia’s activities at the school. I especially liked the relationship between Mia and Louis. It was so innocent yet complicated. This is a great read for teens that enjoy a great romance!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
I requested this book years ago, and am no longer interested in reading. Thank you for the opportunity.
This was such a cute story! I really liked Mia and all of the adventures she had with Louis. I also loved seeing her and Audrey grow as they learned to work together. Mia's strength, determination, and passion for ballet was so
inspiring.
And now I’m missing croissants in Paris.
DNF - Did not finish. I did not connect with the writing style or plot and will not be finishing this title. Thank you, NetGalley and Publisher for the early copy!
When Mia Jenrow arrives in Paris to attend ballet school, she is in for a lot more than she expected. Family, love, ballet, and friendship all come into play as Mia discovers new things about herself, things she loves, and things she hates.
I gave Kisses and Croissants 3.5 stars, enjoying the way it was a cute young adult romance set in Paris. I've been really enjoying books that are set in Europe and this one was really cute. I found that Mia and Louis were really cute together and that they're adventures in Paris really made me miss vacations to France.
The one thing that I found to be quite irritating was the way this book concluded. Now there won't be any spoilers so don't worry. The one thing I didn't like was how abrupt the end was. I found it really unsatisfying and just found my stomach sink in disappointment. I was riding on a high throughout the book, really loving the way this brought me to Paris all over again as if I were by Mia's side, but, as we got towards the end, the way things happened in Mia's life were simply put in a bad way. She ended her ballet program in probably the worst there was.
I ended up not really being a fan of that ending and the way that Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau had decided to leave that ending. I had been confused as to whether I was reading the peak issue and that this book was longer, but, it was really the end of the book. I had anticipated to give this a high rating, seeing as how many people loved it, but, the ending was something I couldn't get past.
Rating Kisses and Croissants 3.5 stars was something that was a last minute change after I had neared the end. It is unfortunate to say this but I really do wish that Mia's life did not happen that way.
That being said, I had a fun time overall reading Kisses and Croissants. If there was ever a part two, perhaps I would love to read it but for now, I'm going to have to stick with what we have out in the world.
Thank you again to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for inviting me to read Kisses and Croissants and for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have not yet finished this book but have purchased a copy for myself of the finalized version. I was unable to finish before the book came out.
Very fun and a little stressful. Helps fulfill the desire to be a ballerina in Paris (which I have no chance of doing). Loved the little twists and turns and enjoyed how real it was with the questions of what you want vs what you wanted.
This gave me Emily in Paris vibes and I loved it. Some of the plot seemed predictable but the predictability made the story more realistic and relatable -- so boo on anyone that has a problem with this! I think this would be a great pick-me-up read for someone in a reading funk.
Who could resist Paris and ballet? Two winning topics. When seventeen year old Mia goes to Paris on vacation, she is thrilled to meet up with Louis, who offers to be her tour guide. A whirlwind tour of Paris develops and Mia wonders if Louis is the her soul mate. The scenes of Paris were enchanting and well researched. This author is new to me but I will be following up with her other books. A great read!
Summertime, romance, ballet, and Paris. Such a heart-warming story that I enjoyed reading this book. Mia's quest to find out more about her family and Louis who takes an interest in her. Both add to the story line and I found myself unable to put don the book. Truly an enjoyable read.
This book was cute, but not really my cup of tea. I think it highlighted the fun, easy-going, summer vacation/romance vibes, but because I'm in my 20s now, it's just not as enjoyable as these books used to be for me. The setting of Paris was probably the thing I liked about it the most. I think younger audiences would enjoy this book more and I recommend it to them.
I liked how this was also a journey of self-discovery for Mia. I didn't love the romance, I may just be used to more adult relationships but this was still such a cute and fun read.
Lovely book!! I adored all that characters and the development was great throughout. Kept me wanting more. I would definitely recommend!
I thought this was such a cute contemporary romance set in Paris. I thought Mia was a great main character and I love her passion for ballet. She is a teenager from New York wanting to get into ABT, but she was passed up for a program and auditioned for a program in Paris and got in. While she is there she learns about love, life, and passion. That even though ballet is her whole life she still can find love. Louis was a great love interest. She even learns more about her family when she seeks out her great aunt. Another thing I liked about this book is that even though it was about ballet there was no mention of starving yourself for the roles. They actually ate ice cream and bread along with salads. Towards the end we were hit with a punch, but the ending was great.
Super cute story about a ballerina who loves to live life, and how life doesn’t always go according to plan. A bit predictable at times and I wish the dark night of the soul hadn’t come so late, def could have used more tension, but cute and a fun read.
