This is kind of a crazy thriller, and not necessarily in a good way. I wanted to cheer for the main characters as usually we don't see this kind of story from a male perspective.
There are 4 parts to this book, Part 1 tells the story, part 2 retells the story (and that isn't really needed even if it is told in another viewpoint. It doesn't necessarily add anything).Part 3, well it's overly dramatic. Part 4 winds it all up and gives you an unsatisfying explanation.
I HATE giving books really bad reviews. Trying to find something I like is always something I want to try to do. In this case it would have to be some of the sub characters though as I just couldn't connect with either of the main ones.
OVerall I was really disappointed because this book had so much promise.
Nothing new and predictable. This story has been written before. A hellish and controlling daughter-in-law that would do anything to keep her husband away from his family and friends. Ben's character has no spine and stayed that way throughout the story. He never did get to the bottom of Bella's background. There was no back story to Bella and no explanation for the way she is, but then again crazy doesn't need an explanation. Although the premise of the story has been written before and somewhat played out, I was holding out for an epic twist at the end. However, that was not the case. The ending was boring and bland as the rest of the story; in which, I might add was long and drawn out without the need.
Thank you to Harper 360 and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For some read I was just approved for this book in October of 202 when I request it before it's publication back in January of 2020. A little later and one review short. Sorry I didn't get to this one, it sounded pretty good. Hopefully I get approved by the next title from HC Warner that catches my fancy.
This book had a great start, but once you get to Part II, its EXCATLY the same as Part I. I understand the different POV's but the conversations are verbatim and became boring quickly.
Not only that, but very easy to figure out the "twist" within the first few chapters.
Was not my favorite read...
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and provide my personal feedback.
3.5 Stars
This is a character driven story and it worked for me as everyone involved were relatable and human with many flaws...there some you love and some you love to hate. The main character, Bella, was a bitch of the highest order and her hatred of everyone around her was palpable.
This is a brilliant read with a wonderfully well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start and there were many a conflict to keep it interesting. I loved the writing style Mr. Warner uses as it keeps you glued to the pages...what will Bella be up to next? She was like Sybil with the multiple personalities. One minute she was sweet as pie and the next she was having a freak-out psycho moment. I don't know how poor Ben put up with it as long as he did. I loved how the plot line was WAY over the top in the most delicious way.
Recommend reading for those who enjoyed the boiling bunny-ness of Fatal Attraction and if you're into the female psychopath trope. Although this was an excellent debut I found the ending a bit too perfect and it bummed me out, I really wish the author went another way. For that reason I am rounding down instead of up.
This book was right up my alley........ I really liked it a lot!! Lots and lots of deceit, lies, manipulation, and so much more that makes SHE a great book. Highly recommend
This book kept me reading the pages to find out just what mean thing Bella is up to next. Ben is fresh off a breakup with his longtime girlfriend Charlotte, when he meets Bella. She is beautiful and stunning and charming..almost perfect. But once his family and friends meet her, not everyone is so charmed. Bella becomes bossy and manipulative and Ben is desperate to keep her happy. Especially when she becomes pregnant with his child. This book had some really twisted twists and kept me interested enough that I finished it quickly!
OMG!!! I can absolutely say: I finally found a new detestable villanelle to hate her every fiber! Bella, you freaking witch, what kind of monster you are! When you think she won’t go there, even she has some limits, she exactly goes there does something culmination of hundred mean girl’s evil brains cannot imagine! Yes, my friends, get ready to meet with one of craziest girlfriends of the literature history! Bella is at your service! (She is beauty and she is also beast)
This extra exciting and not only nail biter but also teeth grinder high tension story is a true wild ride! Poor sweet pie Ben is kindest and nicest guy you can ever meet, a typical boy next door! He was planning a future with his longtime girlfriend Charlotte and when he was about to propose, Charlotte dumbed him for her urgent need for space and think she would do with her life.
And sad Ben meets with his buddy Matt at a bar where a gorgeous woman keeps looking at his direction. That’s love at first sight and that’s where he meets with his dream girl Bella. Dream girl is great definition of her because she’s too good to be true, appears from nowhere and saves the man who suffers from broken heart. Ben’s father expresses those worries with the exact same words: there’s something wrong with this girl you cannot put your finger on.
But it seems like Ben is too happy to care! They start living together and she says she’s pregnant to their baby! Wow! Isn’t everything moving faster than light speed?
Wait till you read Bella’s parts. Yes, at the second part of the book: she shows her true colors, building a secluded party of relationship by alienating all of her Ben’s friends and family! She’s getting too far and I became so sorry for Ben. At some parts I want to shake him so hard and cut his Angel wings. He shouldn’t have to be so good especially when he chooses Lilith as a girlfriend!
And this entertaining and also extremely agitating story ends with a twisty finale that I didn’t see it coming. But it eventually came and hit me in the face!
Overall: a whirlwind, fast pacing story hooks you from the first chapter, disturbing characters, smart, moving writing style earned my well done, crazy, obsessed girlfriend stars!
One of my fastest reads and I had really amazing time!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Harper 360 / HQ for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
I was able to review She by HC Warner for free from Netgalley and HQ for providing me with an advanced ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story shows love, obsession, toxicity and a romance psychological thriller. It is hard to believe how manipulative and unfeeling Bella was. This is a must read and a page turner that I recommend.
A must read. When you feel such strong emotions then that’s a sure sign of a good author. Even after reading this I keep thinking what a horrible character Bella was!!
Huh
This was a quick easy read but it wrapped up just way too strangely for me to say I enjoyed it. It’s a serious topic, domestic abuse, and to see it from the male perspective was quite different(and horrifying too of course).
Bella is just awful. Why she became this monster is never really explained though we are told “daddy issues” might be the reason. I think it might have given her a bit more substance if it had.
The things that I absolutely can’t wrap my head around:
Jo knew Peter had cheated with Bella (and it wasn’t the first time and she adored him still and continued to do so even years after his death). She then let Ben get into that relationship after overhearing proof of the affair?!? Then Ben and Charlie named their kid Peter to show he forgave him?? Come on, that is seriously dysfunctional. I’m glad everything is righted and everyone is so happy at the end but I can’t help being baffled that this set of parents were so willing to throw their kid under the Bella bus. Talk about selfish people! Maybe there was more than one psycho in this story??
Gah!!! I had to finish it and I’m sure it will stick with me for a while... Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Harper 360 for a copy in exchange for a review.
So I just finished The Collector by John Fowles, which is hailed as one of the first psychological thrillers. As I"m reading it, I'm realizing that things are happening too quickly, so where is this going? The second half is the same timeframe but from another person's POV, and was very interesting and gave a lot of insight into both characters. I read Grey, by E.L. James, and I will admit, reading Christian Grey's POV made him seem less creepy.
But then I (tried to) read Midnight Sun, which is Twilight from Edward's POV and it was so boring, I couldn't finish it. The book Beautiful Disaster? Completely problematic, but I won't get into it. Anyway, it was really popular so the author wrote another book by the boyfriend's POV and it made the problematic parts WORSE. What I'm saying here is that writing from two character's POV is not an easy thing to do. Can it add to the book? Absolutely. Can it be boring or awful? Hell yes.
This is one of the problems with She. Writing it from both POVs doesn't work in this book because it's just a repeat of what we've already read. In The Collector, the reader sees the interior dialog of both people who are so completely different. But in She, it's like a repeat of the same conversations we've already seen, so it just dragged. I don't know. This is a long way of saying that this book wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Parts 1 and 2 are just too repetitive. And if someone/something seems too good to be true? IT PROBABLY IS, WHY DOES NO ONE LEARN??
She’s everything he dreamed of. Isn’t she?
Ben can’t believe his luck when the beautiful Bella walks into his life, just when he needs her most.
This was a fast paced book for me. I enjoyed the summary of this one.
I did like the plot, the character's, the ending.
I still felt like this one needed more story to it. But overall a pretty good book from start to finish.
Thank You NetGalley, Publisher and Author for this copy.
SHE is the woman I’d fall in love with - beautiful, brilliant, loving, generous, oh, and calculated, treacherous, dangerous, twisted and evil. Poor Ben, but lucky me, Bella proceeds to become of of the years most favorite and most despised character. Poor Ben and his family, they never stood a chance.
I really wanted to love this book! I am very into books about female psychopaths (let's not think TOO hard about what that might say about me) and superficially, the cover really drew me in because I love shoes. Unfortunately, the book itself was not as exciting or creepy as the cover might suggest with its Louboutin-heeled villain. The book recites events from different points of view, without enough twists or differences to make the repetition exciting. There was the opportunity for some awesome, freaky discoveries once you finally got inside Bella's mind, but nothing too exciting or unexpected came to pass.
You also have to wonder how a guy wouldn't instantly notice a lot of the super crazy behavior "She" was exhibiting right off the bat. Such as following him out of the house when he wants to take a walk -- the weirdness of which was pointed out to him by a friend. This was one of those books where the purported protagonist is so kind of clueless that it's a little hard to identify with him.
I struggled a bit to finish this book because I was not interested enough in any of the characters. Also, a lot of the book had more of a relationship drama feel than a mystery or thriller feel for me. As a side note this book really lost me when it went to even the possibility of a subplot of a woman concocting sexual assault or rape allegations. Nope, nope, nope, not my kind of read, even if the book doesn't ultimately go there -- not unless it's done REALLY well with a compelling psychological portrait, which this unfortunately was not.
So in summary, loved the idea, did not love the execution. I'd be open to reading another book by this author though, as long as it's not the same theme.
Thanks very much to HQ Digital, NetGalley and the author for the ARC!
With repetitious dialogue and a plot that felt like a Lifetime movie, I truly struggled with this one.
There is a need for stories like this. However, this book in particular is plagued with issues, including a lack of feminism in parts that was astounding (34 is too old to get married? What?).
Part Two did start to make the book better, although it was also the story of Part One, just told from another perspective. So, at times, it was boring too.
One thing that I can’t stand is when people keep secrets that go so far beyond hurting another person. And, of course, that’s part of what happens here. Overall, though, the book earned 2.5 to 3 stars.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.
This was one of those books I loved reading so much that I kept putting it down toward the end because I didn’t want it to end! There were some twists here and there. It kept me enraptured from the very first page. I loved the ending! I highly recommend She and I’m giving it 5 stars for sure!
SHE, by H.C. Warner is a suspense book that I just couldn’t put down. I had to stay up to see this book to the end. I was drawn into this psychotic suspenseful book from the start when Ben meets Bella at a restaurant and the only thing she request is a drink of water. Let’s question this statement. Who sits in a bar and only request water to drink.
Mind you, recovering alcoholics don’t relax in bars and scope out victims. I new something was suspicious about her from that point. I was on a dramatic, ‘“oh no she didn’t” roller coaster with this book. I wanted to know what the author would give her readers next. Page after page this writer didn’t disappoint.
This writing is intense, suspenseful psychotic and a guard your loins book. Why Ben couldn’t detect Bella’s controlling ways from the beginning I don’t know. I do know what I would have done though, but this book isn’t about me. Hmh. I will say this, that living room and kitchen wouldn’t have been the same, because we would have been doing some rocking and rolling.
There would have been food splatter on the walls and every dish broken. Maybe even a stove turned over. Make no mistake, I do not condone men hitting women, but Ben does have a sister Emma, who never liked Bella. Ding, ding, ding. Innnnnn this corner, you have the illustrious Emma, high power attorney and daughter of Peter and sister to Ben annnnd that corner you have the psychotic, paranoid, cheater Bella.
Ladies tap your gloves and lets give them a good fight. Go! From the start Bella introduced her controlling ways into Bens family. His father Peter, the head of the family didn’t trust Bella. Once he said this to his wife Jo he remained quiet at every family gathering.
Somethings amiss with this. Bens mom Jo, who was welcoming of Bella, tried everything to include Bella to the family, but little did she know tragedy would strike her at every turn. Ben repeatedly stated to his family and friends that Bella was getting use to things and this new life. Getting use to things my foot! Kick that child to the curb man!
And not your curb. Somewhere near some docks. Let her tail catch a boat to a secluded island somewhere. Bella’s tormenting ways increase after her daughter Eloide is born. The verbal abuse and fights and plain view cheating couldn’t change Bens mind about Bella.
The hell you say? How could a man who had everything to be happy for crumble by one devastating question, are you hungry? Ben has been cut off from his childhood best friend, Matt and Freya. I loved Freya's take no crap from no one. She was suspicious of Bellas ways from the beginning.
Each time that Freya spoke with Ben, she could see her childhood friend wither away. Ben doesn’t look the same, he’s lost weight, he hasn’t slept, and he looks to be frightened and scared to move without Bellas consent. Freya was right. Grow a pair and take charge of yourself man, because “queen b” has them and a vise and she holds the key. Come on Ben! Grab that key and get some relief. You know you want it. Charlotte to the rescue. This woman who walked out of Ben’s life, teams up with Ben’s friends and family. She drafts a plan to convince Ben to leave Bella. You have to ask yourself, did this plan work?
Did other altering mishaps change this plan? What happened when Ben was holding the knife in the dark on his front lawn? Did Charlotte and Eloide make it out of that major car accident? And the most important question. Where the heck did Bella go?
I recommend this book with two snaps and walk with big stick and loaded gun. One more thing. Men, watch out for the woman who only orders water at a bar. Get the heck out of there as fast as you can man! Until next time my fellow readers... read on! I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy. This is a book about love. This is a book about obsession. This is a book about toxicity. What happens when the person you love only wanted to be the two of you for all time? Part romance part psychological thriller I cannot recommend this one enough.
