Shalini Boland is a superb author and this book, like all her others, is a fantastic example of what a psychological thriller should be.
Zoe has fainted in her wedding day and wakes to find things not as she remembered. Family appear to look different and she feels like she has lost memories.
Fast forward and backwards in time during the novel sees Zoe and husband Tony become a family and put behind them the confusion of the wedding day. Zoe comes from a family where her mother died young and she assumes role of mum to her younger sister, who she reported missing some years ago.
Ten years on from the wedding and an anniversary party is arranged. Why are Zoe’s in laws and sister in law behaving oddly? A friend from the last arrives and looks to be trying to ruin Zoe’s reputation as a hairdresser. Who can Zoe trust?
The night of the party sees Zoe start to remember some of the lost memories. What happened during that time and who can she rely on and who is she in danger from.
Five star 🌟 read and many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story is told going back and forth in time (a style of writing that I usually like). This domestic thriller centers on a young woman who faints on her wedding day. She remembers nothing that happened before she fainted. The wedding goes on. Ten years later, on her wedding anniversary, she remembers. This is an easy, boring read that this reviewer found unbelievable. I probably would have enjoyed the novel more if I read it on a beach.
The is my second book by this author and I must say she is now an auto buy author for me.I like her writing style .
Imagine you fainted on your wedding day and when woke up you have losta section of your memory.Everything is working just fine but underneath you have the feeling that something is wrong. And that something is the actually the plot of this story.Enjoy ,you won't be able to stop turning page .
Shalini Boland has fast become one of my favorite authors. She writes smoothly and with such ease that it is a pleasure to turn each page. You get to know each of the characters well and don't see the twists and turns coming! The Wife is no different and will surely provide a wild ride!
I swear, there has got to be so many thrillers with the word wife in the title. That seems to be a popular trope among mystery and thriller writers.
This book was... predictable. We start off with our main character, Zoe's, wedding day to her husband Toby when she faints and loses her memory of what happened leading up to her "accident." We jump between then and now (10 years later) as Zoe struggles to remember her special day and desperately continues to search for her missing sister Dina. However, things are not always what they seem.
I was intrigued by this book (it's only 292 pages) and quickly entranced. As the story went on though, the twists became pretty predictable and the ending was not that surprising. I expected something of that sort to have occurred so the element of surprise was not there. The plot was still pretty effed up but I wish it had been less predictable.
Overall I would give this three stars.
I really enjoy Shalini Boland's books so I was delighted to receive an advance copy of this one.
All the ingredients of a good psychological thriller are included here, paranoia, friends suddenly breaking off contact, gaslighting, missing family members and to top it off vague memories of a traumatic event on the main character''s wedding day. I really enjoyed how Zoe felt her life slipping away from her, she has known for the last 10 years something hasn't been quite right but things are happening now that are affecting her seemingly perfect life. It all comes to a head when Zoe and husband Toby are arranging a 10 year anniversary party.
I really enjoyed this book, so many twists and surprises and I have to admit I didn't see the end coming! However I have a dislike of forgotten or unreliable memory stories. It is purely a personal thing, but I think it stretches credulity when someone has no memory of a traumatic event on their wedding day then 10 years later it all comes flooding back with no flashbacks at all during the time in between. Just my personal opinion, I do struggle with this theme in a lot of books. I really liked the nasty characters and all the paranoia and I loved the ending. I always look forward to books by this author.
Wow what a read Shalini has done it again. Another page turner you won’t be able to put down. Zoe has been happily married for nearly 10 years. He and her husband Toby have two children and are looking forward to a big anniversary party back at the hotel where they married. At the time Zoe fainted just before the marriage was about to take place. She had a funny feeling that something wasn’t right, and that she was forgetting something important. Life goes on but as the party draws nearer Zoe starts to get these feelings again. Also things start going wrong in her happy life. Will she remember and shake off these feelings. A well deserved 5 star read.
Zoe fainted and banged her head on her wedding day, she wakes up in her wedding dress surrounded by her in-laws to be and can’t remember what happened in the moments preceding. Ten years later Zoe and Toby are organising their 10 year anniversary party. Two timelines then and now gives us glimpses of Zoe’s life prior to marriage and now.
Zoe’s sister in-law and best friend stops talking to her suddenly without explanation, she thinks she sees her long lost sister around town and becomes desperate to discover if it’s her. An old friend turns up and causes a stir - it really doesn’t seem to be Zoe’s week!
I was intrigued straight away with the prologue and kept wondering throughout the book what had happened to make her friends act strangely towards her. A very unexpected but satisfying ending has it all tied up. Slow reading in some places but definitely worth a read.
Zoe faints on her wedding day and something has always bothered her about it. It is now ten years later and they are getting ready to celebrate their anniversary. Out of nowhere friends and family start treating her like an outcast . If that is not enough, she starts thinking she is seeing her missing sister around town.
I read this book in one day! Definitely kept my interest even though I was able to foresee some of the twists. Quick, easy, entertaining read!
I loved The Millionaire's Wife and I had high expectations for this book - Boland did not disappoint! This book is the embodiment of the Joseph Heller quote, “Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.”
After a rocky wedding day where Zoe faints just before the ceremony, her life is perfect. She finds out that she was pregnant and it explains the nausea and fainting, since she can't remember what happened just before she fainted. Her husband is loving. Her mother-in-law is supportive. Her sister-in-law is her best friend. But just before her 10th anniversary celebration, her sister-in-law starts ghosting her. Her friend Madeline cancels plans to have Zoe watch her kids over the weekend. And her brother-in-law Toby looks ill. Zoe keeps catching sightings of her estranged sister, Dina, but never gets the chance to talk to her. And to top it off, her vindictive friend from college, Cassie, shows up at the worst time.
What happened on that fateful wedding day? The unraveling of that moment is told in tension filled chapters that alternate between then, and now! You won't be able to stop reading until the end!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance reader's copy of this fast paced domestic thriller!
I have read several books by Shalini Boland, and this one does not disappoint. It’s a domestic thriller starring Zoe and her husband Toby. The story goes back and forth from their wedding day 10 years ago, to their 10 year anniversary in the present day. Boland’s characters are so relatable and she’s a very good storyteller.
Absolutely raced through this in a day, just couldn't put it down.
Zoe has the perfect marriage, her dream job and a great support network with her in- laws.
10 years ago she married Toby but it's all a bit of a blur as she fainted just before the ceremony.
10 years later they are organising their wedding anniversary party but her sister-in-law Madelaine is giving her the cold shoulder. Why?
Then she thinks she sees her sister Dina. She has been missing for 10 years, last seen in Thailand.
Zoe's ex best friend Cassie turns up to cause mischief and some of her other friends start to avoid her.
At the party things come to a head as Zoe starts to remember her wedding day and as the events unfold it will totally shock you.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC
Shalini Boland has once again written a superb psychological thriller,Zoe is getting married to Toby but she faints on the day and when she comes round the day is just a blur..Fast forward 10 years and they are throwing a party for their anniversary, the story is told in flashbacks to 10 years ago and the present day and as Zoe starts to remember what happened on her wedding day thing start to become a lot clearer especially about her mum in law Celia and her estranged sister Dina.Shalini Boland is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors and it is not hard to see why she is up there with the best authors of this genre.I would certainly recommend The Wife to readers who enjoy this genre,5 stars all the way !
4.5 out of 5 stars! Exciting summer psychological thriller!
After fainting on her wedding day, Zoe always had an unsettling feeling about what happened that day. Fast forward to 10 years later when Zoe & her husband Toby are planning a 10 year anniversary celebration. As this party gets closer, Zoe catches Toby lying to her and her sister-in-law and friends seem to be ignoring her. She keeps feeling like she doesn't have the full picture from her wedding day. Does she really want to know the truth & what will that bring?
Definitely a page turner that will keep you wanting to read more! I really enjoyed the time shift between then & now - it was easy to follow, but let the story unfold in an engaging way.
Thank you Shalini Boland, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. #TheWife #NetGalley
Thanks to NetGalley, publisher and author for allowing me to read and review this amazing thriller. I declare Ms. Boland the queen of the unputdownable. What an engrossing tale! Poor Zoe. On what should have been the happiest day of her life, she fainted. She almost missed her own wedding! Luckily, she is feeling good enough to marry the love of her life, Toby. Funny thing, she is not entirely sure what happened that day. Fast forward 10 years and she finds herself celebrating the happy anniversary with a well deserved party. The day finally arrives and, funny thing, she is having the same strange feeling she had 10 years ago. The difference is, this time around and unfortunately, she finds out what really happened on her wedding day.
This book without giving away too many spoilers is a twister to be unbelievable! A wife who passes out on her wedding day has no clue that is a sign that her life is never going to be the same! As her 10th Anniversary approaches and she plans a large celebration and vow renewal things start to go awry!
This is where my exit is going to be because the plot thickens and oh , my will you never believe what will ensue for this poor wife!
The author does a great job of keeping you enticed and then a buildup and then a little leak and then a bit more of a stymie! I will definitely read more of this authors books!
Thank you to the authors and publishers who work diligently for us the readers!
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
Truth and its inconveniences
Zoe had a perfect life; a loving husband, two healthy kids, a job she loved, and a little cottage.
The only regret she had was not being able to have thoroughly enjoyed her wedding day ten years ago. She fainted and crashed her head. Her mind was confused and blurry during the whole ceremony.
To recapture that moment, this time with a clean head, Zoe and her husband Toby decided to throw a 10th-anniversary party at the same hotel.
But as the party approaches, things start to get strange. Relatives and friends begin to behave weirdly around Zoe, and she has difficulties in determining who she can trust.
The story is exciting, and I was hooked from the first page. Zoe's well-ordered life started crumbling down, and I kept turning the pages, both wishing and dreading to find out what was really going on.
I enjoyed the wide range of characters. While Zole was compassionate and family-oriented, Toby was loving but insecure. The same happened to the side characters: Toby's strong-minded mom and weak brother, Zoe's grief-stricken dad, and rebellious sister.
I don't read many psychological thrillers, but I'm looking forward to reading more books like this one. It is not overly bloody, and it has the right dose of suspense.
An intriguing and entertaining read. Highly recommended!

The Wife was a quick and easy read for me. I was dying to know what happened on Zoe's wedding day from the second they teased it in the first chapter, The final outcome was a little far fetched but overall it was a fun story.
Zoe wakes up after fainting on her wedding day with absolutely no memory of what happened. While she goes on to get married and have a happy life for the next 10 years she always thought something just felt off about the whole thing. As her big 10 year anniversary party gets closer things from her past keep popping up bringing more questions about that strange wedding day. When people close to her start to avoid her and everything just feels wrong, Zoe is more determined than ever to find out what is going on.
I won't go into too much detail at the risk of spoilers but there were a couple of plot points that by the time everything was done and wrapped up I couldn't figure out what they had to do with anything at all which was a bit annoying
If you enjoy a quick, well paced suspense novel this might be the one for you!
I’d never read a Shalini Boland book before and as the opening scenes saw the main character agonising tortuously over why her sister in law wouldn’t let the nieces sleep over one weekend, it didn’t exactly feel action packed.
Fast forward a few hundred pages on a journey that had me completely hooked, keen to understand what was happening and why around the events leading up to a 10 year wedding celebration and I could see why Ms Boland’s books have their fans. There was a compelling need to get to the end and no shortage of chapter ending cliff hangers as the story switched back and forward between then and now.
Less than 48 hours later I have finished. I know what happened. Completely ludicrous but entertaining none the less. This won’t be the last of her books I will read for a bit of fast paced escapism!
Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for a fair review.
Having never heard of this author before reading this one, going in I didn't know what to expect. Behind this generic cover and title is a cracking little book.
Full of twists and turns, some of which I saw coming, some not.
I found this to be a really easy read that drew me in quickly and I found the lead character likeable.
The tension builds well and I couldn't put it down.
