Oops, I did it again! I read a novella when I don't really like novellas. Why am I this way? WHY? *screams into the void*
(In my defense, I didn't know it was a novella when I began reading)
Listen, I like a slow burn and a lot of story with my smut. This is a lot of smut with a bit of story. Yes, it was crazy-hot. Yes, there were sweet moments. But the insta-love was just so quick and seemed built on almost nothing beyond sex.
So, if you want a CRAZY HOT SEX FEST QUICKIE then this is a great choice! But it just didn't do it for me.
I received an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.
A short but very steamy read although I would have liked more development in the emotional and relationship aspect. Whenever Julia and Clay got together it was for sexy times. I actually skimmed the last 1/4 of the book it got so repetitive. It almost felt like i was watching a porn movie. Lots of mechanics but little emotion.. Nor did I like the 'endearments" Clay used.. It almost seemed like he couldn't remember Julia's name. Loved the cover!
I received a free copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
Though this is a short story , I did like it. Felt like it was too short and things were happening too fast...
I really wish this book was longer. It would have flowed a little better I think. To me, Julia was too timid to magically be ok with her experiences with Clay. She needed time to work up to it and we didn't get that in this book. It was a great story, but it just wasn't enough. It wasn't very believable. I know, I know, its fiction and not all stories are believable but for a theme like this? It could have been done better.
Hot entertaining read with a great storyline. Julia gets railroaded by her school because they think she's working a 2nd job at an adult store. What will they do when they find out she's dating the hot owner? This is so far out of the norm for quiet librarian Julia, but darned if she doesn't love it. A fast happy ending journey.
Got an advance copy through Netgalley, all thought are my own and given voluntarily
Julie and Clay are that couple that rushes into everything head first after a month of knowing each other. While this works for some, it doesn't for the vast majority.
This book was so close to being three stars from me but because of how rushed it all seemed and the very little plot that was involved it lost something for me.
I liked that Julie was a librarian and had dreams of being an author, but the fact that all of that went to the side when Clay came into her life kind of ruined it for me. I did however appreciate how Clay did take an interest into what Julie wanted to do and got her back on track with following her dreams. A little bit more plot and this story would be even better.
I received a complimentary copy of Behind Closed Doors in exchange for an honest review. This was a quick and easy read, with everything that a good novel needs.
The author didn't waste any time developing a theme, creating emotion, mostly embarrassment for Julia, and creating a deep love for Clay. Loved their initial meeting at the store,I loved the way Clay made the first move towards a date, and the chemistry between Julia and Clay seemed natural. there was even some conflict that was introduced into the plot and later resolved.
Overall, great read. I will definitely look for more from Rachael Reilly.
Julia and Clay
Julia and Clay are instantly attracted to each other.....no beating around the bush. I never wanted to run a sex shop until now. This was a short story but well worth the read. Lots of hot steamy sex and a little drama....so good.
A very short, insta-attraction story.
When I requested this book I thought this was going to be a Alexa Riley type book, but it is not. While there is instant attraction for both Julia and Clay, but it is not a straight up smut session, even so I really enjoyed this one. There is some drama, and the sex scenes are HOT.
One thing I did not like in this book, was Julia being called a "cougar" which not only did not make any sense since she is only 3 years older than Clay, but also due to the negative stigma with the word "cougar" itself.
However a solid debut from author Rachael Reilly, I do think a full length novel from her would be amazing and am looking forward to reading one.
This is a short romance novel between librarian Julia and sex shop owner Clay. I wasn`t sure what I was expecting when I started reading this but it definitely made me want to quit my job and go work in a sex shop!!! I recommend this to anyone who’s up for a fun sexy romance to unwind with. I rate this a five out of five! The only thing I can complain about is that it was too short. This was a great plot with interesting characters and plenty of sex. It was fun to see Julia get out of her shell; makes you think that life’s too short to play it safe!
All opinions and thoughts are my own. This Arc was provided by Netgalley.
What a really quick read that book actually has a lot.
I really liked Clay. You always have this person in your mind that own a sex toy shop but Clay is far from it. He is nice, caring, a gentleman when he needs to be and is clearly in love with Julia from the first moment. I love that he's understanding about her job.
I could really relate to Julia. She was a woman who just wanted to try something new and because she took this leap she found something or more importantly someone she didn't know she would find.
This book was fun and spicy.
From Wild Rose Press is a short story about a school librarian who breaks up with her boring boyfriend and then after meeting the owner of a sex toy shop, they go out on a date and begin a relationship. Julia and Clay are working at their budding relationship when she is thrown for a loop by the school principal about a morality clause in her contract, so she breaks up with Clay.
Though this is a short story the author deals with this issue and their issue as a couple through a friend who is supportive of Julia throughout this story. Though it would have been nice to have had a full-length book. I do understand that some authors don’t have that luxury due to a contract signed or whatever. This after meeting a few at a conference my wife and I went to and spoke to some of our favorite authors and hearing about how they began. So, I am grateful for what I got with Julia and Clay and though sex scenes between were hot, and the story itself was good. Very much worth the read.
Julia is a middle school librarian who is hoping to spice up her sex life after a breakup and being labeled "boring in the bedroom". She visits Behind Closed Doors, an adult toy store and finds more than she bargained for in the form of the owner, Clay.
The attraction is instant and so are their feelings for each other. This was a short and steamy read. I finished it in a couple of hours. I really could have read more about these two! I really enjoyed them!
Thanks so NetGalley, Wild Rose Press and the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This novella was quite interesting to say the least. I did enjoy it, but I wish there was more of a storyline and more romance.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy. Well. it certainly was a quick read. I really enjoyed reading about the connection between Julia and Clay. Their attraction was one to write about. For me, their relationship formed too fast. I would have liked to have had them develop their time together. But, all in all it was a nice read.
What do you get when you mix a school librarian and a sex shop owner? A sexy, wild, and fun ride.
Despite how short this story was (Around 100 pages), I really enjoyed this one! It was a quick, lighthearted read, with a good amount of smut that kept you wanting more. My only critique is that I wish it had been a longer book because I found myself wanting more of these characters!
Actual rating: 2.5 stars
The writing style lends itself to be super easy to fly through and I will say it's not poorly written which can sometimes be the case with smutty novellas. 64 pages only lends itself for so much character development. I actually really liked the characters - especially Macy. I do have a few qualms - I don't care for the pet names (pretty lady, Coug, blue eyes). I felt like the dirty talk was not natural and felt clunky with the rest of the story and how it was written. Call me a prude or whatever, but I despise the word p*ssy. Call it anything but that. I also expected more toy play with Clay being the owner of an adult toy store. So realistically my qualms are very much my own opinion and may not bother others. Again, not poorly written. Not bad at all. If I did 1/4 stars, this would lean more towards 2.75 stars.
This book is a novella therefore it’s just around 60 pages. It’s an insta romance so you do not get a lot of back story or character development. I enjoyed the general idea for the plot, but I wish it was a full novel.
I received a copy through NetGalley for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley, The Wild Rose Press and Rachael Reilly for gifting me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
If you’re in the mood for a fast, steamy read with a HAE, this one's for you! There are less than 100 pages in Behind Closed Doors which makes this a perfect read to palate cleanse after a heavy read! Have no fear, while this one is quick we still get to see Julia and Clay work through their fair share of drama.
Was this book great? No. But it’s a solid book that you won’t regret spending your time reading!
I am still fanning myself y'all! What did I just read!? I had never read a Rachael Reilly book so this was my first book by her. This book is a short smutty read about a middle school librarian and aspiring writer Julia Morgan who is single at the start of the book . Her loser ex had labelled her boring in bed so she decides to visit Behind Closed Doors an adult store where she meets Clay. Y'all it was steamy from there on and we not complaining . I think the plot was solid and characters lovable . Great book to read on a Friday night with burning scented candles and snacks
Huge thanks to the publisher for my ARC
