While most of this information wasn't new to me, I think this guide would be very handy for someone new to make more sustainable choices with their food. Having a concise, informative resource on hand is a huge resource.

Thanks to Tiller Press, S&S/Simon Element and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed how straight forward this guide is. One the hardest and most anxiety inducing parts of trying to live more sustainably is making the best food choices. Bratskeir presents for their reader an easy to use guide to ease any tension that exists around making sustainable food choices. This is a definitely good book to add to any library's collection of books on personal sustainability.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book, A Pocket Guide to Sustainable Food Shopping by Kate Bratskeir.

Foremost, I have to say that this book includes quite a bit more information than I thought! It is well-written, informative, and educational without being overly technical or preachy. I would describe this book as "accessible," meaning that it is able to be understood by a variety of people, which is (in my opinion) a very important aspect of sustainability and education in food/nutrition. At the same time, there are plenty of statistics, data, sources, and guides that do not neglect the educational factor of the book.

Overall, I thought it was a great read. Very informative, good layout. Nice, attractive cover and title.

Thank you to Netgalley and Tiller Press for giving me the chance to read and review, "A Pocket Guide to Sustainable Food Shopping" by Kate Bratskeir. This is a great book for beginners that are looking to make better sustainable choices at the grocery store. It breaks down labels for different meats, dairy products and eggs but is also gives so much more information than this. None of the information was really new to me but it was enjoyable. The writing was easy to understand and easy to relate to.

A Pocket Guide to Sustainable Food Shopping by Kate Bratskeir is non-fiction guide to purchasing your food with lower to minimal impact on the planet. The book shares many helpful tips and ways to make sustainable habits automatic or lower barrier such as storing produce bags in your bags or bringing your own silverware to restaurants or for take-out instead of using plasticware. The writing is easy to read and fits the style of a pocket guide. However, I wish the index would have included more specific headings to make it a true pocket guide as it becomes harder to find tips and instead is more like a book than pocket guide. In addition, the author references tips from blog posts and other authors but sometimes doesn't provide actual information. For example, the book references natural cleaning tips at other locations but does not provide the actual DIY information. However, I did take back helpful tips such as how to make your own produce wash and clarified confusing information on eggs (e.g. cage-free, caged, free-range, Certified Humane Pasture-Raised0. Overall I would recommend this for someone who wants an easy read similar to a blog post to learn how to be more sustainable in your food.

You get key ideas/terms bolded. Space for notes at the end and shopping list which can be good for those wanting to make notes from the book. Things to consider when you go grocery shopping.

A pocket guide with personality and purpose. A perfect holiday gift for the sustainability conscious or the wannabe-smarter food shopper to have on the go. Great tips and even some new ones to me (a studied sustainability shopper!).

A Pocket Guide to Sustainable Food Shopping by Kate Bratskeir is an interesting, passionate, and accessible guide to minimizing our environmental footprint, consuming less, buying more wisely, and understanding the food delivery networks and marketing to avoid as much waste and packaging as possible. Due out 12th Jan 2021 from Simon & Schuster on their Tiller Press imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a really well written guide full of tips and background info. The author is quite honest about the fact that an individual consumer's impact is negligible but that our collective influence is undeniable. The layout is logical and progresses from the general (problem categorization and beginning to make changes) to the specific (buying meat, eggs, milk, seafood, and navigating package free/bulk options). The book also includes template pages for note-taking and shopping lists, as well as an index.

Our current path especially in the west is a direct line to catastrophe. We simply cannot keep living like this and have a planet left for our children and grandchildren. It's literally unsustainable. This book provides some concrete methods of examining our own individual lifestyles and making changes in our personal consumption.

Five stars. There were some good tips here which I hadn't considered, and we tend to be fairly "green" already, but this book helped.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is absolutely the best and most helpful environmental books I have ever read. Unlike other books in the same category, A Pocket Guide to Sustainable Food Shopping shows the systemic impact involved in environmentalism, but let's the reader know their efforts aren't futile. It's broken up in very consumable chapters that cover any aspect of food shopping someone could think of. It's a very unbiased book that shows evidence-based truths and pushes the author to think critically. I suggest anybody interested in sustainability and environmentalism reads this book.

Pocket guide to pretty much how stores and marketing lie to us on average every day. Truth hurts and it’s remarkable what manufacturers are allowed to get away with. Some interesting tidbits in here about how to really shop and ignore what stores advertise as healthy.

What did I like? Best practices were pretty eye opening. So when we buy eggs that are from happy chickens they might not be so happy....Somewhere in all this is a flawed marketing system that needs an over haul. So many people are turning to backyard gardens to produce what they need so I hope something will come about all this exposure.

Would I recommend or buy? Some of this was unknown to me so I imagine there is a sell base out there for this kind of material. It’s about a hundred pages which is pretty much sourced throughout so the information is second hand knowledge which is where pocket based probably comes in. I didn’t however agree with naming actual companies in the throes of lawsuits because of unethical practices. I believe in giving people practices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Four stars...I received a complimentary copy to read and enjoy.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I have been into this subject very much lately and I was so excited to read this! I learned a ton from this book, but I think the title "pocket guide" is a little misleading because when I think/hear/see pocket guide I think of a more streamlined/smaller companion. However, I am glad it was not that. Definitely recommend.
