I’ve been a big, big fan of Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series and read all of them. You know what you’re going to get - a small community where newcomers find a refuge from whatever problems besetting them. Everyone will help out and this town will bring both love and friendship to the newcomer. It’s all quite predictable.
This novel is no different. Kaylee has come to Virgin River to recover from the death of her beloved mother. She also needs to finish the suspense novel she’s committed to writing. She meets Landry when she rents a place to stay from him. They bond, become friends, and fall in love.
I just found the story repetitious and not all that interesting. We read over and over again about how much she misses her mother and how her grief has been paralyzing her. And Carr’s writing involves telling us in detail about daily activities of the main characters. We read about what she is wearing, what food she buys, what they cook, etc. I could have done without so many details that didn’t really move the story along. We’re entering into the world of Virgin River in more detail than I needed. And even though I’ve read the earlier works, I found that I couldn’t remember who all these people were and it just became a bit too much trying to keep the characters in Virgin River and Kaylee’s group of friends from her home straight.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
It felt so good to get back to Virgin River in this new story! It's like visiting old friends.
Fans of the series will be grateful for this new installment. I hope that Carr continues bringing us back to Virgin River every now and then.
I love this series on Netflix so was excited to see her latest book come out. I think this was just ok. A little slow in spots which is why I’m giving it 3 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
I haven't read a book in the Virgin River series in years, and recently watched the first season of the Netflix series. It was easy for me to pick up this book and easily feel like I was back in a familiar area and surrounded by familiar pieces. Carr did a good job of adding little reminders of who some of the main characters are without doing large "catch-up" paragraphs.
Kaylee heads to Virgin River to work on a book and also work through her grief after her mother's passing. Her housing plans fall through on the day she arrives, and she finds herself renting a guests house from a nearby bachelor. The small town warmth and coziness comes through as Kaylee finds herself creating new friendships and feeling the support and love of these new people in her life.
Loved my Return to Virgin River! Wish I could return there in real life! Virgin River sounds like such a wonderful, perfectly charming place where everyone goes to heal, grieve, grow, fall in love, to get over whatever is ailing them and end up staying there and live happily ever after. We all need to read one of these books every so often. I discovered Virgin River through the Netflix series and have now read a bunch of the books and have thoroughly enjoyed each one of them.I enjoy revisiting the same characters in each of the books and every book introduces new characters to know and love with their background story.
Fun, light reading while waiting for Netflix season 2 which is coming this fall! Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing and Netgalley for the advanced digital review copy!
Ahhhh. A Return to Virgin River is EXACTLY what we needed right now. All is right with the world. Long time fans will happily return to Virgin River anytime. Kaylee and Landry are perfect additions to the town and their story makes it seem like we never left Virgin River in the first place. Fans of the Netflix series may probably start with this book, but my advice is to start at the beginning. Vintage fans may want to both rediscover and return to Virgin River. Thanks, Robyn for returning!
Personally I thought this book started out slow and was actually going to give up. But I'm glad I kept reading it. Such a good story, especially if you are a fan of the Virgin River series. Once I got past the first few pages I couldn't put it down.
I love the books that Robyn Carr writes, I can't remember the first one I read by her, but I do know I have always enjoyed them. This one is another addition to the Virgin River series and it's really good. The surprise part is it has an holiday feel to it. I love this book and i hope others will too.
I am grateful that Netgalley and the publishers let me read this in exchange for an honest review.
Book 19 in Virgin River Series
I have read every book Robyn Carr has written. Virgin River is a wonderful series! This series got my non-reader
mom buying and reading the entire series! I also enjoy the Netflix series too much!!
Kaylee heads into the mountains for an escape to write a book.
She immediately makes friends, friends willing to help her, friends who will change her life, and friends she will
keep for the rest of her life.
Descriptions will put scenery right in front of you
Great to catch up with old friends while meeting new ones.
I want more of Virgin River!!
I have only read eleven of Ms. Carr’s novels although a low number compared to the many books she has written but is actually a good number for me as I am not a fan of chick lit/romance stories.
This is #19 in the Virgin River series. I have only read a few in this series but am somewhat familiar with the characters.
Story is about fresh starts, new friends and the magic of Christmas.
I go nutty over Christmas so this certainly seems like a nice heartwarming story and just what is needed during long long pandemic.
Kaylee Sloan is an author who is dealing with writer’s block after the death of her mother. She is having difficulties with all the memories she sees in her childhood home in Newport Beach (Actually Newport Beach is not too far from where I live ~ which of course has no bearing on this story but I like when I feel an extra connection to a story)
Kaylee has a deadline coming up so decides to find an isolated place to write. She gets the suggestion to rent her Newport Beach home and rent a cabin in the mountains. Ah perhaps Virgin River, a mountain village in Northern California.(Note: Virgin River, CA is a fictional town that Robyn Carr and Netflix made real~ true it is a lot like any of our beautiful California Mountain villages!).
An arrangement is made but upon arrival the mountain cabin is on fire!
Yikes! we are experience many fires right now in CA so this is all TOO real!
Kaylee is beyond upset but soon finds the people in this mountain community are wonderful and helpful!
With help from the locals, she finds a place and soon has become part of the village. She is finding inspiration to write in addition to overcoming her fear of dog thanks to her landlord/artist/dog trainer/very/handsome neighbor Landry who is actually helping with both her writing and her fear of dogs.
This is a “Feel Good” story ~ a few bumps but a story to just sit back and enjoy!
At the end of the book there is a look at Scar’s visit on the set of Netflix production of Virgin River.
She said the production of this series is a dream comes true and was delighted when invited to visit the set and watch her characters come to life.
Note: I am an avid reader and really don’t watch TV but I did view the “You Tube trailer of Virgin River” It was fun seeing Jack’s bar and the beautiful mountain landscape.
Want to thank NetGalley and Harlequin – Trade Publishing for this early release granted to me in exchange for an honest professional review. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for October 13, 2020
I love Virgin River and was so excited to take a trip back to visit with favorite characters. Plus we got to meet Kaylee, who you will fall in love with and relate to instantly. Her character is amazing and resilient. The author writes these amazing stories that take hold of your heart and emotions. She makes you feel like you are in the center of all the action. You don’t want to miss out on the Return to Virgin River so make sure you grab your copy!!!
Virgin River roots after her series was adapted last year on Netflix. In this return to Virgin River we meet Kaylee and Landry. Kaylee mom has passed away on Christmas the year before and she has come to Virgin River to finish her book and spend some time in a place she came with her mother when she was younger. Landry too has lost a parent his father a few years ago and now lives in solace. He creates his sculptures and live singular life.
Kaylee arrived at Virgin River only to find out the place where she would stay was no longer available. During some coincidence she meets Landry who lets her know he has place to rent and so begins the beautiful love story that grows slowly between these two. Ms. Carr weaves such lovely tale of these two getting to know each other and how they realize their two lost souls becomes one united in compassion strength and most of all love. While reading this story I smiled from ear to ear so happy to have been able to revisit this lovely fictional town with these fictional characters that are so lovable and warms one's heart. Review on goodreads and eventually will be on amazon.
I wish I could give this book 20 stars!!! Wow Fantastic read. I loved Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series. This does not disappoint. We meet new comer Kaylee, whom comes to Virgin River to start over after the death of her Mom. The cabin she was going to stay in unfortunately burns down and she is forced to seek another place to stay. Sometimes the worst circumstances turn out for the best. The story also catches up with many beloved characters from Virgin River, including Mel and Jack.
It is so good to be back in Virgin River. To catch up with Jack and Mel and a whole bunch of other residents that I missed. Kaylee is going through a great loss and trying to put her life back together. When she arrives in Virgin River she is met with another loss. Virgin River has the healing power most wish every place has. Kaylee meets Landry and becomes friends with him. He is a loner and artist with a spare house to rent. Throughout the whole book we get to see Kaylee overcome her grief, make new friends, see how magical Virgin River really is and fall in love. Kaylee learns to move on with her life with the new friends she has made along with some old ones too. If you have read this series you will love this book. I also think if you haven't read this series you could pick this book up and read it as a stand alone.
*I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily giving my honest opinion*
It was wonderful to finally return to Virgin River and catch up with old friends! I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Robyn Carr's writing. I can't say this is my favorite book of the series, but I definitely enjoyed meeting the new characters and the cozy holiday spirit in the book. As usual, Virgin River provided a great escape from reality.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for access to this ARC.
What to do while waiting for season two of Virgin River on Netflix? How about diving into Return to Virgin River!!! Robyn Carr is back at it again with another fabulous addition to the Virgin River Series. Releasing, October 13th!!
"It's where strangers become friends, and everyone is welcome."
This one really tugged at my heartstrings. Kaylee Sloan is heading to Humboldt county. She needs to grieve and find a way to come to terms with her new normal. One without her mother.
"You know what I learned about grief? It's always there and it's always at the center of your life and then one day you realize with some surprise that you had a fairly good day and you wonder if grief left. Or if it got smaller. It didn't - - your world got bigger."
Kaylee, after a very confusing start of unforeseen circumstances, finds herself next door to the pleasant and very attractive Landry, her new landlord. It's a slow, soft build-up where they share stories of heartbreak, parental loss, past jobs, and community relationships. They share life past and a budding present. It feels comfortable and real.
*On a personal note: I have to say, as someone who was extremely close to my mother, we talked every day and were very much like Kaylee and her mother. I totally get and understand the all-encompassing feeling of loss and the length of time it takes to be able to move forward without a mother and friend in your physical life.
I found a kindred spirit in the character of Kaylee. It's helpful in feeling not so alone in the process. Thanks for that Robyn Carr.

Over the last few years I’ve become a huge fan of RC and have read many of her standalone novels and one of her series (Sullivan’s Crossing) but I had never read the Virgin River series, despite hearing so many wonderful things about it. Late last year I finally decided to dive in both because of the release of the Netflix series and to the challenge I co hosted with Sarah at ReallyIntoThis #fallintomybacklist I adored the first book so much that I’ve spent this year reading the entire series so you can imagine my absolute delight when it was announced that Return to Virgin River was releasing this year! All of that to say, this is now one of my all time favorite series and if you’re a longtime fan you will be very pleased with the latest.
First things first, and one of my biggest burning questions before I started this one was would we be checking in with Jack and Mel? Paige and Preacher? Jilly and Colin? Paul and Vanessa? I’m so happy to say yes, you definitely get some scenes with the old gang, I didn’t totally keep track but I really believe that you at least get a brief mention of most of the characters from previous books. And while that was fantastic, so we’re the two new characters this time around. I immediately clicked with both Kaylee and Landry and could totally see them fitting together perfectly almost immediately. True to the authors style they both have obstacles to overcome before they can truly be together, but they were both so relatable and authentic and their issues were handle with RCs trademark humor and grace. It felt so good to be back in VR, I really can’t say enough wonderful things about this book, this series, hell this author! She’s really one of the best and if you’re a fan of contemporary romance she’s a must!
Finally after 12 years we get another Virgin River book. I enjoyed visiting characters from older books in this series as this has always been one of my favorite series. There was a lot of sadness that overshadowed the story but the holiday Scene s made up for that.
What a wonderful return to Virgin River. It felt like coming home. Ms. Car. Never lets her readers down.
Return to Virgin River was a pleasant surprise for me. This type of genre is not my usual read, it reminded me of a Lifetime Movie which is not normally my cup of tea. I know that there is a wonderful group of readers who will appreciate and enjoy this book. I was not aware that it was part of a series as I am new to this author. The book starts with a new beginning, a road trip for a young author to get away from the home she shared with her mother. Her mother had passed away 9 months ago and she is flooded with so much grief she could not complete a manuscript that she has been contracted and paid to do. She decides a change of scenery is needed in order for her to try and get her head in the game. She was rented a family friend's cabin for six months but upon her arrival, she is greeted by local townsmen and the fire department. There was a fire that started in the upstairs and it is uninhabitable. Not knowing where to go or what to do, she winds up at a local restaurant bar and is over run with the friendliness and helpfulness of the owner and townspeople. The owner offers her a casita to stay in for the week until she figures out what she is going to do. She ends up running into a man in the bar who offers a cabin on his property for rent. Once she sees his place, she falls in love with it and the area and decides to stay for the six months. She is distracted so much by the town and other things that she ends up writing two books by her deadline and her life is completely changed by finding romance and a family she had never knew she needed or wanted. A few times I rolled my eyes at the dialogue and the romance, but this has more to do with my own likes and not necessarily an issue with the author's style or dialogue. I truly feel that those who love the Lifetime Movie Genres will enjoy this book, it is a nice easy read full of romance and happy endings.
