The recipes are indeed easy and the ones I tried out were tasty, but the book is lacking in the photograph department, which is something I look forward to in my cookbooks.
"Easy Dutch Oven Cooking" starts by providing a brief history of the Dutch oven cooking pot and a wealth of information on how to use and maintain it. Recipes in the book are mostly one-pot meals and are organized by category: Breakfast & Brunch; Pasta Rice & Grains; Soups Stews & Chili; Braises & Roasts; Fried Foods; Sides & Sauces; Breads; and Desserts. Recipes are straightforward and the cooking process is explained well so that a novice cook can experience success. The book has excellent photographs and the recipe headers provide information on whether it is gluten free, vegetarian, etc. The are a lot of recipes to try and if you a new to Dutch oven cooking, you will have a lot of inspiration! My only complaint is that nutritional information for the dishes is not provided and more pictures would be helpful.
Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
There is a lot to choose from and appeal to home cooks in this. The common home appliance will get more use than just making a roast around the holidays with this cookbook. Use it to make desserts, main dishes, side dishes, breakfast dishes and so much more. There is plenty of variety in the recipes as well.
I received a Dutch Oven as a gift because I had taken up bread making and everybody said it was better to bake bread in a dutch oven. I had no idea that the pot could be so versatile. Easy Dutch Oven starts out with some history of the Dutch Oven and a lot of information on how to use and maintain your own Dutch Oven.
The book included all kinds of different recipes, with sections ranging from breakfast to sides and sauces to braises and roasts, and everything in between. It was an extremely inclusive list of dishes! There was a nice mixture of classic recipes and contemporary recipes. At the end of the book, Furcini included helpful measurement conversion tables and each recipe had icons that quickly showed a reader whether a recipe is dairy-free, veggie, nut-free or if the meal can be made in 30 minutes or in one the one pot!
I’m really excited to try out making the sugar beignets, the rigatoni and pumpkin seed pesto, the roasted ratatouille and the strawberry rhubarb crumble!
I don't recall ever seeing a cookbook strictly for Dutch ovens. I've been coveting a LeCreuset for quite awhile, so was curious what I could cook in it. This book contains lots of recipes for main dishes, soups, sides and even desserts. They are nicely organized and there are several photos (but there could always be more!) Many of them are standards, but some are new and interesting (Apple Cider and Dijon Glazed Pork Chops, Cuban Shredded Beef).
Thank you to Netgalley and Callisto Media for giving me the chance to read and review, "Easy Dutch Oven Cooking" by Sara Furcini. I received a pre-seasoned dutch oven at my bridal shower last year but assumed it could only be used for stews and soups. Boy, was I wrong! You can make a versatile amount of things in a dutch oven. The recipes are easy to follow and contain little tips at the end of each one. Some take a lot more time than others. I am thinking about making the Gouda mac n cheese this weekend! I wish there was more pictures of the food! I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who is curious about owning a dutch oven or someone like me who has one but was clueless what to do with it.
Owning a Dutch oven is almost mandatory camping gear, and most avid campers do much of their cooking in Dutch ovens. Sara Furcini has published an excellent cookbook, Easy Dutch Oven Cooking: Classic and Contemporary Recipes in 5 Steps or Less, which includes dozens of excellent recipes for camping or even at home in the oven.
This cookbook includes important and timely information on choosing a good Dutch oven, the different kinds of Dutch ovens, care of the different Dutch ovens, and which types are best for your purposes.
The recipes are varied, and gathered from everywhere; the first recipe in my queue is Pan-Fried Pork Bo Ssam (Korean lettuce wraps), and there is a fabulous recipe for Hatch Chile Nacho Cheese Sauce which is easy and good. Tonight’s dessert is a Buttermilk Cherry Clafoutis, which is easily put together and made of ingredients that are most likely in the fridge and on the pantry shelves. Most of the recipes included have minimal ingredients, are easily put together, and are appealing to cooks from beginners to experienced. There are good introductory notes above each recipe, and the actual recipes are easy to follow. Although there are a few nice photographs (one heading each chapter), the only thing that would improve this cookbook would be to have more; in fact, most cooks agree that photographs are an integral aspect of a good cookbook. That is the only drawback to this book, and it is certainly not something that should prevent anyone from purchasing this book.
This is one cookbook that will make cooking at a campsite even more fun and is recommended.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This book provided the most amazing recipes for cooking in a cast iron. I really enjoyed learning the basics and the fresh new take on foods I love to eat.
Hello cover! What a gorgeous cover... who doesn’t want macaroni and cheese? So I priced a la crueset Dutch oven and ouch! Two hundred to five hundred dollars. I get what a versatile dish this is but even the knock offs want a big price.
What did I like? Unfortunately I just don’t have a Dutch oven but the recipes were what I was looking for. I don’t even own a knock off dutch oven but I can see the versatility of owning one. Author does a good job making sure we know how versatile this is.
Would I buy or recommend? If you can afford one of these then buying the cookbook to use one is pretty much a no brainer. I thought it complimented the Dutch oven quite nicely. Even if you don’t have one I still think most of the recipes could be made without it.
I received a complimentary copy to read! Three stars.
Very nice cookbook! I've been wanting to get a dutch oven for a while and I'm very excited to try these recipes! There are recipes for breakfast, pastas and rices, braises and roasts, fried foods, sizes sauces, breads and desserts. Most of the recipes have no photos unfortunately. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
I've had a dutch oven for quite a few years and haven't used it much. This book tells you the advantages of using a Dutch oven, along with a lot of classic recipes and contemporary recipes. Once the weather cools down I will be making some of these recipes.
This was an arc copy from netgalley.
Easy Dutch Oven Cooking Classic and Contemporary Recipes in 5 Steps or Less is a tutorial and recipe guide by Sara Furcini. Due out 18th Aug 2020 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 259 pages (for the ebook version) in paperback and ebook formats (ebook available now). It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
The recipes are arranged by category: Breakfast & Brunch, Pasta Rice & Grains, Soups Stews & Chilis, Braises & Roasts, Fried Foods, Sides & Sauces, Breads, and Desserts. I really appreciated the inclusion of plant based dishes. Many of these are -hearty- one-dish mains that even my meat loving family really devoured (without complaining).
Ingredient measurements are supplied in American measurements only. There's a conversion chart for metric measures in the appendices. Special recipe notes such as gluten free, vegetarian, nut free, etc are listed in the header for each recipe. There's no included nutritional information. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in sidebars with the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex.
The photography is not abundant; most of the recipes are not illustrated, but the photographs which are included are clear and well done. I wish there had been more photographs and serving suggestions, but I do understand that extra photography increases the price of book projects very quickly.
This is a huge collection of recipes and even allowing for the fact that some of them are very similar to others in the same category, this will keep one-pot/everyday cooking afficianados going for ages. These are simple "everyday" recipes which are anything but boring. We tried several dishes and all of them were tasty and well written. (We didn't try any of the bread or dessert recipes, but I found no glaring errors with a quick read-through).
We're definitely going to try more of these recipes. Well written book, tasty recipes. I've dinged half a star for the near-total lack of photographs. For cooks who -need- photographs for serving ideas, this will be a disappointment. Since it's a one-pot-cooking book, the lack of photos shouldn't be crippling for most readers.
Four and a half stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
There are some great recipes in this book. I wasn’t expecting to see recipes for bread and desserts. Will reference for the future for sure.
I love Dutch ovens! I was really excited to see the recipes Furcini creates in hers. These recipes will appeal to the younger cooks who are just starting to discover Dutch ovens and are realy into foods. I'm afraid that not being much of a foodie, I'll continue to cook "old school" in mine. But Sara Furcini's book contains lots of wonderful recipes that covers every aspect of cooking- one pot, breakfasts, ides, soups and stews, desserts, car and maintences of the ovens- useful info for new owners. The photos looked great and I am sure will look even better in color!
This is a beautiful cookbook. I loved the pictures. And the recipes were interesting. There were a lot of recipes in the book that were unexpected (which I love.) The recipes were creative and there was a wide variety of different kinds of recipes, so I think there would be something for everyone in this cookbook!
