This was a really interesting book with world-building that was a little hard to follow. I loved Stella as a FMC. The writing in this book could have been stronger but overall an interesting concept!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Another great book from one of my favorite authors. Highly recommend to friends and family.
I want to thank the author for allowing me to read this book.
I was immediately attracted by the beautiful cover of this book.
The story begins a few years ago when a very beautiful woman has never been happy for long, she escapes from her Ottoman prince a vampire named Murad. He reigns with his half-brother Alaric over the supernatural Primati.
We find the only living descendant Stella who, at the age of seventeen, must play between the care of her sick grandfather and the discovery that life in Portland is not what she thought it would be. She learns that her family won't leave her alone and that one of their old enemies wants her dead. As for her best friend Amanda, she is a true witch and Stella must do everything she can to find out the truth about the curse that is killing all the women in her family as their twenty-first anniversary approaches or she will suffer the same fate.
As for Alaric, he takes his role as Primati enforcer to heart. Half angel, half demon, there is no room for a mortal in his heart. He will find himself between a law he has been protecting for centuries and the girl who cannot receive any love without dying.
A book read in one go, so much so that I was immediately hooked on the story, so moving in certain passages, captivating, gripping, addictive, full of intrigue, suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters.
I ended up purchasing the book after it was archived and am happy to be able to provide a review now.
Everwish has so many classic elements of fantasy stories - vampires, witches, wraiths, demons etc. - but somehow managed to feel completely original. The story and world-building is compelling and enticing and I can’t wait to see how the story evolves and what happens next for Stella!
The only thing I didn’t love is that parts of the story felt underdeveloped and some of the twists blindsided me / there wasn’t enough of a background or basis for them in my opinion. Overall the cast of characters is very fun and dynamic and for the most part found Stella (the main character) likeable. There were a couple of scenes where I found her less likeable and not a reliable narrator though.
This is the first book I’ve read of Amelias and can see she has such incredible potential to be an amazing author! Look forward to reading book 2 when it’s published. 😊
It was difficult to give the book a rating but I think it’s a solid 3.5 rounded up to a 4!
Firstly I would like to thank Netgalley for their generosity in supplying me with a copy of Everwish in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't have big expectations when I first saw the cover and read the synposis, but I am very happy to report that this book exceeded my expectations but quite a bit.
I really enjoyed Alaric and his complicated and conflicted character was interesting to observe.
Stella was a nice main character with a mix of sassy, confident, vulnerable, loving, hard and selfless for those she loved, as the makeup of her character.
This made a nice mix between the two main characters for a love interest and I enjoyed this romance but definitely think it could have been handled better and explored more. It kind of fell to the wayside a little bit and there wasn't enough super exciting action and plot to make up for this loss. Which left me feeling a bit deflated and like I was surely missing a whole chunk of the book. It just wasn't fleshed out at all.
I liked the magic system and enjoyed the variety of different characters and different creatures. However I did get a little lost when trying to keep track as there are quite a few characters that are introduced around the same time and this confused me a bit. I actually ended the book not being able to remember who the villain was, which is probably my fault for not reading the book fast enough once started, but I have read slowly on many, many other books and never forgotten who the big, bad villain is.
Overall I quite enjoyed this one and if you like magic and exploring different magic systems and styles then this book maybe be a good choice for you. It has a similar feel to Akaenae. If you need a good chunk of romance in your fiction novels, then this might leave you feeling a little lost like it did me, but there is enough to keep you going through the book in my opinion. Just maybe not enough romance to label the love interests as the magical 'One True Pairing'.
This book was absolutely incredible! It has literally everything... ancient legends, curses, terrifying creatures, love...
The greatest feature is the author's stellar (see what I did there?) writing. She is masterful at description without it being forced, even when portraying creatures that the reader can only imagine. Moreover, her "voice" is very real and distinct for each character. No "angsty teenager speak" or ridiculous attempts at dumb, dated slang. The characters felt believable, even when they obviously aren't.
It's rare to see a heroine as ordinary as Stella was, in the beginning, to be as strong as her character was amongst other supernatural creatures. Nother about her dims in shine as the story evolves. she is my favourite character to read in 2020. I am sad that the book isn't available in the Indian Sub-continent.
As for the story, the ride is wild and layered as many people from start to end reveal themselves in the many twisting folds of the story. It has everything that one can desire for, witches, half demon and half vampire prince, a star, a star daughter, elemental magic, goddesses and of course, plain old humans.
I can't wait for the next book to be released and see where Stella and the curse that follows the female in her family leads to.
I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
An interesting fantasy romance. There is plenty of world building and the writing is good. The characters are fascinating and engaging.
A good read.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I don't even know where to begin! I absolutely adored this book! I couldn't put it down. The imagery fantastic, the writing divine and the characters loveable! The author weaved such a wondrous world of whimsical and wholehearted adventures!
The stage was left for many more stories to unfold and I truly hope that we will see many more books following this fun fairy tale retelling!
First, thank you NETGALLEY and the Publisher for gifting me an early copy of this book! I have not read a fantasy in a LONG time, let alone one I actually liked. So imagine my surprise when I was hooked after the first sentence! I’m always down for a romance, no matter what kind and the romance in this was so beautiful and contributed perfectly to the story! The characters were perfect and I honestly am having a hard time finding a flaw with any part of this book! Everything was so well written and had a purpose. The action and the MAGIC... oh lord the magic in this book was fantastic! It just transports you. I am so excited for the next book and am waiting on the edge of my seat! This was so amazing! 5 stars!

This story follows Stella as she dives headfirst into the paranormal world while falling head over heels with Alaric almost instantly while trying to survives curse.
Stella is a headstrong girl who knows exactly what she wants, is brave in the face of adversity, and doesn't hesitate to make the first move in romantic relationships. With Alaric who is the love interest, I thought he was interesting especially when his background is brought to light.
Although a lot was packed into this book there didn't seem like there was a whole lot of excitement but it's been built up enough to set up sequels.
For a book that had me questioning things throughout the book, this wrapped up most things rather nicely. A must-read for those who like stories about vampires and witches.
Everwish follows the main character Stella as she discovers a paranormal world within her own and tries to navigate her attraction to Alaric whilst harbouring a curse passed down for generations. The exploration of kinship and found family in this book were handled particularly well and resulted in very interesting dynamics between characters. Stella at one point states “we have nothing in common” when referring to her found family. This serves to highlight the exploration of what makes a family in our society. The strength and agency that Stella exhibits throughout the plot is also a major positive. Despite the age gap with Alaric, and most of her peers, Stella knows her own mind and is resolute in her decisions. She also has the confidence to make the first move in most of her romantic interactions, something most women in the fantasy and romance genre do not do. It’s a breath of fresh air to have a normal, confident young woman at the centre of the book.
The reason for my rating sitting solidly within the 3 star is mainly that I felt not much excitement occurred in this book, however, I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. This is the first book in a series and that was certainly evident. This book exists to set up future books and build the world. On the one hand, I’m grateful that so much care and detail was taken to build the world, especially as this plot involves a lot of magic and mythical beings. However, I do wish a bit more excitement would have happened especially towards the end. There was also one very small quote that I took issue with and that was “Amanda and her OCD” in reference to Stella cleaning her room. I do think more care needed to be taken to not use this mental condition to describe such a normal behaviour, cleaning one’s room, as this continues to perpetuate misleading notions about a genuine illness. This was the only real issue with the book though and it didn’t reduce my enjoyment of the characters and the plot, just something I think the publishing industry needs to take more care with.
I look forward to seeing where this storyline progresses and how these characters develop in future books.
As the author, my opinion is biased. I hope it finds an audience who enjoys a headstrong soon-to-be 18 year old who cares more about her freedom than her beauty. An audience who enjoys a wide world full of Primati supernatural creatures and characters and readers who might root for a certain judgmental immortal to find his own happiness. There is always a way to break a curse - isn't there?
*Thank you to Amelia Oz and Netgalley for sending me a copy of Everwish. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
In a magic meets mystical spin on a classic fairy tale, Everwish follows 17 year old Stella as she tries to break a curse placed on her by those long before her. I really did like how quickly we jumped into the story as it was a very different yet nice contrast to paranormal/fantasy books that tend to have very heavy and sometimes confusing world building. I really liked this piece, though obviously I was a big WTFF moment when my favourite character died (big dramatic cry moment for that). I also noticed how Amelia Oz went about the use of a slur used and made a point in her writing for the main character to call out the fact that it was racist, thought it was really towards the end and felt like a slight afterthought. Overall I thought it was a good book that I read all in one sitting, the story was interesting and easy to zip right through and as I am not intensely on the edge of my seat for a sequel, I really did enjoy the story and the protagonist and would want to see where the second Primati book takes us.
Stella’s destiny has been decided, just as the destinies of all the women in her family – she is cursed to die before the day she turns twenty-one. The key to her survival lies in the supernatural world her ancestor escaped centuries ago.
I am an ardent believer in the power of the opening lines. This one hooked me right away. I thought that the world-building was at times overwhelming yet essential to the story. Alaric’s presence in Stella’s life brings the many dilemmas both must face, infusing the novel with tension, romance and unexpected plot twists. Usually, I am not keen on “insta-love” trope, this novel, however, executes it quite well. The ending leaves room for continuation as many questions are yet to be answered and the five hundred angel-demon hybrid by the name of Alaric absolutely must make another appearance.
Everwish is an enjoyable, attention grasping read, perfect for the fans of fantasy retellings and supernatural.
It was okay I didn't like this book very much but I didn't hate it, I particularly didn't like the romance because it was so similar to others I had already read and I didn't like the relationship between them but I think the world they are in is very interesting a the world-building was great.
The romance in this book is good. Not too overpowering but enough to be interesting. I like the characters and their personalities. A minor complaint is that there are too many characters in this book... It's a lot to keep track of at times. The ending is pretty good but there seems to be some unanswered questions at the end. But a good book overall.
this was a really good read, I liked that it was a strong start. The characters were great and I really enjoyed the plot. I look forward to more from the author.
Debut author Amelia Oz has delivered an engrossing Paranormal/Fantasy/Romance book that will grab you from Page 1.
Stella Avery is just about to turn 18, she loves three people, her Grandfather Sam, cousin Silvan and best friend Amanda. Unbeknownst to Stella, her life is about to be cut short and there are forces who are either trying to keep her alive or end her life. A curse is upon her, as was every young female before her in her family. Her parents were killed immediately after her birth and Stella was left to grow up with her Grandfather. Her Father’s Romily family rejected her and Stella has a growing hatred for all but Silvan.
There is Magic around Stella but she has no idea what part she plays in the happenings. She finds herself attracted to Alaric who is a Primati Enforcer and can shape shift. But Alaric finds the only way he can keep Stella safe is for her to marry his half-brother Murad, even though he has fallen in love with her.
This is a wonderful book for Paranormal/Fantasy/Romance lovers. The characters are well developed and I love that you learn about each character fully.
Stella’s character is such that she just keeps growing on you and you can’t wait to see where her abilities go. There are Vampires, Witches and Demons and you never know who is bad and who is good. So many twists to this story but so easy to follow.
Amelia Oz has written a book that I found I didn’t want to end and look forward to Book 2.
Thanks to Netgalley and Amelia Oz LLC, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members’ Titles for the opportunity to read and review this title.
I have to admit, I don't often get pulled in by a book cover, but I did this time. I saw it and had to know more. Paranormal YA is right up my alley, and Everwish didn't disappoint. Vampires, witches, demons, and more. If you love the supernatural and romance, Everwish is an excellent choice.
I did feel that while the world-building was relatively great, it felt like the author was cramming in so much that it could have easily filled at least another seventy pages, if not an entire second book. The book description kept me reading, even though the beginning didn't really hook me. It wasn't until Stella met Alaric that I became truly invested in the story.
I found the storyline to be somewhat unique and compelling. In all honesty, I'm hoping there will be more books set in this universe. For some, her "engagement" while still in high school might be pushing the line a bit, but in the world Ms. Oz created, it fit well with the story. Besides, fairy tales (and certain animated movies most of us loved as kids) have been marrying off teenagers for a really, really long time.
Not only do I want to find out whether or not Stella breaks the curse and can be with Alaric, but I want to know if Lila and Murad get their happily-ever-after. Do the M&Ms get a chance to find love and happiness to soften those hard edges? And what will become of Tess? I hope I get the chance to find out!
