This Time Next Year was the perfect warm and fuzzy holiday romance I needed this month! The layout of the book was interesting and I was cheering on all of the characters. There were a few laugh out loud moments that we all need these days. I recommend this to anyone looking for a holiday themed contemporary romance.
Readers, block your day! The next great rom-com has arrived - just in time for the holiday season.
This Time Next Year tells the story of Minnie Cooper and Quinn. Two 30 year olds who were born at the same hospital, on New Year’s Eve. Minnie and Quinn meet accidentally at his 30th birthday party - and what follows is the story of their past New Year’s Eve and present day 2020. The back story really gives a lot of depth to the characters and helps readers fall in love with them. It is also quite easy to follow along during the back and forth timelines.
I was surprised by how much I loved it! It is seriously the perfect rom-com with laugh out loud parts, and two characters you will find yourself rooting for at the end.
I’d love to see this on the big screen!!
This book made me feel all the feels. It’s the PERFECT winter read.
I am so thankful to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC, and I can’t wait to pick up a hard copy to keep on my shelf.
Summary:
Born on the same day, in the same hospital, separated but together over New Year’s past, present, and future. Quinn stole Minnie’s name and she’s resented him her whole life- Quinn lived the life she thought she could have had, but Quinn feels as though he’s just gone through the motions. When the two finally meet, they couldn’t feel more opposite. But doesn’t that old saying go opposites attract? But how many years will it take for them to get there? There’s always next year, I suppose...
Honest Review:
This book reminded me so much on One Day in December and In Five Years, it just might be one of my favorite reads of the year. I loved traveling backwards and forwards in time with Minnie and Quinn and seeing how much their lives have overlapped, despite all of their differences. It is quirky, fun, and emotional. It is exceptionally well written, and makes me miss going out and about in the world and exploring all it has to offer. It is the perfect holiday read, so curl up next to your fire place and pick up a copy right now to see how the story ends!
“This Time Next Year” was a sweet, fun and sometimes emotional story about two New Years babies. Minnie and Quinn are born into two very different lives and yet how they continue to collide or over time. I really enjoyed this story and the writing as you bounce through time and those stories then connected the present day. A great, feel good story about people not always being who they seem.
🚨Debut Author~ Sophie Cousens, I hope she writes some more!
Definitely recommend this read. 💞

The first like 30% of this book was so good! It grabbed me immediately but then I got so frustrated with both Minnie and Quinn that I just wasn't as invested as I was in the first part. I didn't really enjoy the third person prospective either. But overall this was a quick read. I'm glad I read it! I just don't think it was for me!
Omg I loved this book! I think Sophie cousens is a new autobuy author. This was exactly the heartwarming story that I needed this month. Anyone should read!
I loved This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens! It was just the perfect, fun, quirky, humorous rom-com to read right now when the world around us is a bit dark and crazy because it allows for hours of wonderful escapism. While it's an adorable romantic comedy, it also had a depth that I didn't expect as it touched on themes such as self-love, self-esteem, and lack of self-confidence, as well as important mental health disorders like anxiety disorder and agoraphobia so for me, that made the novel even more readable and relatable since I have and do struggle with a severe anxiety disorder and greatly appreciate authors bringing focus to mental health issues and how it impacts a person's life.
This is a story of two people, Minnie and Quinn, both born on NYE in the same hospital just a minute apart, and how their lives have intersected (unknowingly) as they've grown up in the same city until they finally meet when they turn thirty. They've lived very different lives--Quinn one of wealth and privilege and Minnie the opposite, but both have internal struggles and personal issues that come to light as they quickly develop a friendship, one that has obvious chemistry. But can they be more than friends because of the issues they are battling?
The characters in the book are just wonderful. I loved Minnie and Quinn and felt a real connection to them. The other characters are just as wonderful, with a great mix of personalities, but most importantly, all the characters felt like people you'd meet in real life, which I loved!
If you're looking for a wonderfully sweet romance that takes place on multiple New Year Eve's for a holiday vibe, then I recommend this one!
Thank you, NetGalley, Cassie Sublette, and G.P. Putnam’s Sons/Penguin Publishing Group for the DRC. All opinions are my own.
3.75 stars
A romance comedy with a slightly different slant. The unfortunately named Minnie Cooper was born at New Year's and according to her downtrodden mother was cursed with lifelong bad luck. Even on the night she was born, another mother sharing a room with Minnie's mother bagged a cash prize and stole the name (Quinn) that was meant for Minnie.
Fast forward thirty years, with some trips back to other birthdays along the way. Minnie, always trying to avoid the extra misfortunes that her birthday brings, runs into the legendary Quinn while locked in a bathroom at a New Year's party. She has a boyfriend, he is engaged, and the meeting is not fortuitous.
Minnie has found a precarious niche, working at the baking that she loves and in business with her best friend providing food for those in need. Minnie is a naturally sunny personality but over the years has been beaten down, partly by life and partly by the weight of her mother's gloomy expectations. So, the stage is set for changes for Minnie, personally and professionally.
This was a fun and sometimes thoughtful read. Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Minnie and Quinn meet randomly at a NYE party. They are total opposites with only one thing in common - they were born on the same day at the same hospital. There is no reason to believe they will meet again. However, they start bumping into each other. Will their differences get in the way of something more?
I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice escape from the realities of 2020. (And I liked that in this story took place in what a normal 2020 would have been.). This is my first book by Sophie Cousens, but she is definitely in my radar now for future books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
This Time Next Year is a fun, light read that would be the perfect book choice for New Year's! Looks like New Year’s Eve is going to be a quiet one at home this year so how about getting yourself a light, fun read to ring in the new year? This Time Next Year is the perfect choice! It starts out with two adults who were both born in the same hospital on New Year’s Day thirty years ago and unexpectedly meet for the first time. It flips back through new year’s past and the reader soon learns that these two have been connected for longer than they think. Maybe it’s been fate all along. I certainly enjoyed it. All you need is a glass of the bubbly and you’re all set!
This was such a sweet, fun & romantic book. I really enjoyed reading about Minnie & her bad luck with her birthday aka New Years, I do wish they delved more into the relationship with Quinn. I wanted more of them just being Minne & Quinn. This is the perfect book to read near Christmas as it gives you all those holiday feelings.
Over the weekend, I read “This Time Next Year” by Sophie Cousens. I finished it quickly! It was very cute, light, and happy! Just what we all need.
I am giving it 4 stars!
My summary: Minnie Cooper (yes that is her real name) has lived a life full of bad luck… all because someone stole her name. She was supposed to be a Quinn. She was supposed to have good fortune and lead a life of accomplishment and success. BUT, how could she possibly do that when she was named after a car and misfortune always seemed to follow her around?
Born a minute apart just after midnight on New Year’s Eve, her “love twin” stole what would have been her life. When they meet coincidentally decades later on their 3oth birthday, Minnie’s whole life changes. Is Quinn’s life really all glitz and glam? Or are they more similar than she thought? 30 years later she is finding out just how close their paths have always been from crossing.
I highly recommend starting your December month with this new book! I have never heard of Sophie Cousens but I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style. She weaved the past and present together very nicely! She wrote from a third person’s point of view and it was perfect for this story. The reader was able to feel the emotions from all the characters, especially Quinn and Minnie.
There were a few heavy themes that made the book more meaningful than just another chicky rom-com!
I am a sucker for a holiday themed book set in London. I could just picture the tiny little flats Minnie lived in, the parks and ponds, and each of the New Year’s Eve nights.
Minnie gave me Bridget Jones vibes with her unique clothes, quirky confidence, and teeny bit of awkwardness. She also had a perfectly random group of friends, some family issues, and moments of feeling utterly lost in life. Relatable to a lot of readers!
Quinn is tall, handsome, and sure of himself… (at least in my mind hehe). But like an onion, there’s layers to his life that only the lucky few get to peel back.
I adored the genuine friendship the two of them grew together. It was nice and you could feel it through the words on the pages.
Overall... this is a feel good, guaranteed to make you smile, PG rated romantic read! I predict this one to be very popular this holiday season. Don’t miss out - grab it, curl up in your favorite reading nook, & get ready to fall in love with all things Quinn and Minnie.
*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for my honest review!*
This is such a lovely story with a lot more substance than “holiday rom-com” would imply. There is a healthy dose of will they or won’t they, of course. But there is also a lot of will she or won’t she. Will the protagonist stop letting the pessimistic, fatalistic worldview she was raised with hold her back? Will she get her life - and business plan - together and make her own luck or keep riding the tide of life where it takes her? Will she choose him, the handsome, charming, wounded boy she loves or herself? Does it have to be a choice? Find the answers to all this and more amidst a cast of lovably eccentric characters in London.
This was a great romance about two people from different backgrounds that meet at a New Year's Eve party. Minnie and Quinn discover they were born at the same place and the same time on New Year's Eve. This isn't enough for them to start a relationship on. However, they keep bumping into each other despite being complete opposites. I really enjoyed this story. It was the light read that I needed at this time of year.
Quinn and Minnie may be from two different worlds, but when they meet on New Years Eve 2019, they find they have an immediate spark. Minnie, being the hard-working realist she is, claims she can’t possibly waste her time on a privileged and handsome party boy like Quinn. But does fate have a different idea for them?
What a cute winter read. It was breezy and fun, took place on multiple New Years Eve’s, had charming flashbacks so what more could you ask for? The humor in it was very rom-com-y, but it had a fresh self-awareness of the jokes and tropes that I appreciated which gave it a unique quirk. I loved the NYE celebrations and it felt very much like When Harry Met Sally, so if you like that movie definitely check this one out! Pub date is tomorrow (12/1) and it is also a Nov @bookofthemonth option!
It was funny to have a book that took place throughout 2020 and at times I wanted to be like, “y’all can’t do that...social distancing!!” But it was nice to imagine a parallel universe where we could celebrate NYE 2020 in a normal world. Makes you really hope things will be a little more back to normal This Time Next Year.
Thank you so much @putnambooks @netgalley for this cute eARC!
I Adored this book!!!!! I need another one like this ASAP ! Thank you thank you for giving me the chance to review and read this, honestly don’t change a thing it’s perfect.
Only bummer is I wish I had a hard copy now to share all the love !
It’s amazing for the holiday season, I was rooting for the characters the entire time. And when she needed time to figure out herself it was perfect, I loved watching each character grow.
Also the witty banter makes me miss living in England so badly !
I will be sending this out as Christmas gifts,
Can I also say I love Greg’s roommate what a gem, and I think the relationship between the moms turned in beautifully
This Time Next Year is a very cute story about two people Minnie and Quinn, who were both born on January 1st and seem to have nothing in common other than their birthday, yet they seem to want more from each other. Quinn has it all. A successful business and nice home while Minnie is barely holding on to hers. The two characters are very well developed and have a certain charisma that keeps you wanting to know more about them. The two of them have something brewing and it makes for a very cute romantic love story of opposites attract.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
This Time Next Year is a really sweet and absorbing rom-com about two people who have one thing in common: they're both January 1st babies. Minnie and Quinn were born in the same hospital minutes apart and grow up in the same city, but they don't meet until their birthday when they turn thirty. They grew up in very different circumstances and live very different lives. After they meet on their birthday, they begin running into each other and they begin to develop a friendship. The story follows the deepening of their relationship over months and it also jumps back in time to different points in their lives, illustrating parts of the journey that has brought them to their present day lives. Minnie and Quinn begin to develop romantic feelings for one another, but with everything else going on in their careers and personal lives, it may not be the right timing for them to be together.
There are many more layers to this story than just the love story. This book is also about the complicated relationships we have with family, how difficult it is to follow your dreams, and having hope that things will turn out ok, no matter how much "bad luck" you have had.
I loved every single character in this book. Sophie Cousens does an amazing job of breathing life into each character. I loved Minnie because she is passionate, giving, and she is a bit of a mess. Quinn is a romantic at heart, even though he's a commitment-phobe, which is an interesting contradictory mix. Minnie and Quinn have great chemistry from the moment they meet and I loved the slow burn of their relationship. The supporting characters helped add depth to the story and some of the big group scenes had me laughing out loud.
This is a wonderful feel-good romance book and I highly recommend it!
“Where do you want to be this time next year?”
This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens is a great story about love and friendship. This great story is filled with emotion and humor.
New Years is always unlucky for Minnie which is also her birthday. She has always attributed bad luck to her name. The story starts with everything going wrong New Year’s Eve 2019. Minnie meets Quinn Hamilton. Their mothers met in the hospital when they were both in labor. Both women are very different with vastly different lives. Their stories started together but soon diverge. Will they find a way back to each other?
This Time Next Year is Minnie and Quinn’s stories from New Year’s Eve 2019 to New Year’s Eve 2020. There are flashbacks of other New Year’s Eves throughout their lives and including their births.
After their meeting, Minnie and Quinn start running into each other and quickly develop a friendship. Is their relationship more than just friendship? Will they take the risks of being more than friends?
This Time Next Year is a great novel. I loved the storyline and the layout of the book with mixed in flashbacks really added to the story. All of the characters are great. Minnie and Quinn are both great people dealing with personal issues. Quinn is afraid to get close to people. Minnie is afraid to take risks and blames everything on her bad luck.
The friendship between Minnie and Leila added to the story. They have been best friends since they were fifteen years old. They tell each other everything. Leila is dating the love of her life and Minnie is struggling with her love life. They own a struggling pie business together.
I recommend This Time Next Year to anyone looking for a romance with a great story.
Thank you NetGalley, Edelweiss, and G.P. Putnam’s Sons/Penguin Publishing Group for This Time Next Year.
“I’m happy to be me, and I’ve never felt like that.”
This Time Next Year is Sophie Cousens’ debut novel. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a TV producer in London, but we’re so glad she stepped into the writing world because her first novel was an absolute pleasure to read. This Time Next Year follows the story of Minnie Cooper (yes, that’s really her name) and Quinn Hamilton, which were both born at the same hospital on the first day of the year in 1990. Their mothers bonded in the labour ward, as they were excited to see which baby would be the first to be born and who would win the £50,000 prize. Not only did Quinn win, thanks to being born one minute before Minnie, but he also took her name and all her luck too—according to her. Both grew up differently and had different life trajectories.
Minnie has always thought that her life would’ve taken another path if she had been named Quinn, and has always felt jinxed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day; which is why she usually tries to avoid celebrating them. In the present day, she is also the struggling owner of a pie-business —one that she runs with her best friend—and is trying to keep it afloat with only a handful of co-workers. On the other hand, Quinn is a rich and successful businessman, whose life hasn’t been as easy as it may seem—as both the reader and Minnie get to discover throughout the novel. The pair finally meet on their 30th birthday, after Minnie has had a series of mishaps… What follows this encounter is a series of “will-they-won’t they” that will keep the reader invested in the story at all times! But what makes this novel truly a good one is that romance isn’t the sole thing it focuses on. There’s a lot more to this story than that.
Even though at first it seems like the only thing the main couple has in common is the day of their birth, the pair have insane chemistry. Minnie is caught up in the idea of her bad luck, which in the beginning can be a bit wearing, but as time progresses—and inspired by Quinn and his “you make your own luck” approach as well as that of her best friend’s Leila—she starts to change and to believe more in herself and put herself first; which only makes the reader love her more. And Quinn isn’t the spoiled rich guy that Minnie (and the reader) thinks he is in the beginning. He is one of those characters that grow on you as you get to know them and their backstory and once you understand where they’re coming from and why they act the way they act. And together, well, they are wonderful. Their relationship is a great narrative push and is filled with anticipation. They’re two people who have always circled each other, even without them knowing; as it is made evident thanks to the flashback chapters that are weaved in throughout the novel. When they meet for the first time, their conversation just flows and is filled with banter and it continues to be like that until the end. Yes, obviously, not everything is perfect and both characters have their flaws and things to work on but that’s what makes them real.
Because that’s one of the things Cousens' did best in This Time Next Year, creating characters that feel real. This is a very character-driven book, and whilst the story is great, what makes you really love the book is the characters themselves. All of them were different but equally loveable and relatable. They are a fun set of characters: some are quirky, some are colourful, and some are more uptight and selfish… But this is life, this is how people are. On top of being a likeable set of characters, their dialogue felt natural and never dragged; it had the perfect mix of seriousness and banter.
The narration shifts from the main storyline to chapters focused on past NYE celebrations, which show that they’ve always gravitated towards each other, even if they weren’t aware of it. The main storyline takes place throughout the course of a year, which allows the reader to fully get to know more about the characters and their lives as well as to see how much they evolve! Because there are serious character developments in this book, which is wonderful to see. However, at first, these time jumps may seem a bit disjointed and may lead one to believe that they interfere with the pace of the story. But that only lasts a few chapters, because there’s a point when the reader will start connecting the dots and seeing how relevant these little intermissions actually are, both to understand the main story and the backstory of the characters.
This Time Next Year is much more than a romance novel. It is also a book about friendship, family, fate, and finding your own life-path and loving yourself. All of these subplots were equally interesting to read as the main plot, and Cousens did a wonderful job of balancing all of them in this sweet story. One of the subplots that stands out the most is the one about mental health, which is something that’s rarely discussed in romance novels and it definitely added another layer of depth to the book. It not only focuses on the persons who deal with it first-hand but also on how it affects those around them. And how helpful it can be to trust somebody else with your struggles, that it does not make you weak, and that it is okay to focus on yourself and your needs. So, we must congratulate Sophie Cousens' writing and storytelling because both were beautiful. Definitely, an author you should be looking out for in the future!!
Overall, This Time Next Year is a heartwarming, funny, and uplifting story. The sort of feel-good romantic read to forget the rest of the world for a little while. It offers the perfect dose of escapism, which is something we all need right now.
