I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
The book would not load so I was unable to read and review.
"Mr. Pink" has a little bit of everything -- it offers international revenge drama, romance, and a cryptic mystery wrapped into one. Mr. Pink is a fashion mogul that knows how to use his power and sexuality to manipulate others and, ultimately, to pursue justice for an old friend. Along the way, Mr. Pink finds a magnetic attraction to Swedish journalist Andreas, and they both must navigate the feelings they have for one another, through explosive ups and downs, and at times, spanning two continents. They ultimately must decide if they can make any type of relationship work with Mr. Pink's sinister plans in place.
Overall, what I appreciated most about "Mr. Pink" was the relationship and romance aspects of the book. Compared to other books I've read involving LGBTQ+ characters, the dating and love scenes were some of the most detailed and lifelike that I have read. I was most interested in reading about the ways in which Mr. Pink used his social clout, charisma, or power, to set things in motion on the path that he desires. While Mr. Pink did not always make decisions that I agreed with, his actions added layers to his character that made it more interesting to see what would happen next in his love life.
Unfortunately, the structure of the book in terms of the revenge plot fell a little flat for me. While the reader is able to see small snippets of steps that Mr. Pink is taking throughout the story to enact his plan, we not learn about the prior event that precipitated this elaborate scheme until the final couple of chapters. For me, not knowing his motivation and what he was fighting for left me more confused and frustrated about what was going on and whether or not he was justified in his actions. Despite this, the final couple of chapters do offer some satisfying reveals in terms of previous events we have witnessed and how they relate to where the mystery of what has been happening unfolds.
I think there could have been potential here with this revenge story. However, I wasn't able to get past the writing and dialogue here. Really not for me, but maybe others will find something for the here.
I really thought I would like this because I thought the story and the characters had potential, but I couldn't get into it. The story was intriguing, but the writing was a bit too clinical, and there was a lot of telling instead of showing. I also thought the characters could have been a bit more fleshed out. I would try another book by this author, but this just wasn't for me.
I loved this book. But I am not a good judge in books on that matter since I love reading about psychopaths and villains as the main characters.
I am not sure if you can call Mr Pink a psychopath, though. He is scrupelless, yes. He is driven by revenge, which means he has a motif. He's not doing it exclusively for the thrill and the fun of it and he eventually starts to actually care about Andreas.
For me, this book was all I expected from it. I had some issues with the multiple sex scenes, but they seemed less copy+paste than the ones I came across in other books.
It was the perfect book after reading some books which didn't convince me. A refreshing little Masterpiece.
I received a free copy by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mr. Pink reminds me a bit of a modern day Barney from How I Met Your Mother as he is quite the romantic hiding behind a player's mind while also being a smart business man. While this is definitely a dirty book; the sex scenes are very well written and classy. The sex isn't too much and thankfully doesn't distract from the story but instead adds to the character's relationships which connects them to the drama.
Great book from start to finish and it had my attention from the beginning to the end. It was romantic, a little dark but overall it's a great book.
This book was so good from beginning to end. And his life story was fascinating. I highly recommend for anyone who loves learning about others who live interesting lives then this one is for you
This indigenous and unique plot captured my attention from the very start!
The characters were relatable and well fleshed out.
The revenge plot was compelling and kept me captivated as how it would be carried out.
The author's writing style appealed to me. Looking forward to reading more from them!
Description
How does a man living a lavish life in multiple cities plan a complicated revenge plot while chasing a new, sexy romance? In the thrilling romance “Mr. Pink” (Oct. 6, 2020), by Patrick Hjertén, this billionaire does just that. Readers will be enthralled with Mr. Pink from the very start, a man who manages to continue living a glamorous, exciting life while seeking vengeance for a friend who was sexually assaulted.
Mr. Pink is usually busy being a bossy, controlling billionaire who owns a magazine, publishing house, and homes in both Stockholm and London. But he’s also busy planning revenge on a man responsible for his college best friend’s coma. When he’s not calling in favors, buying priceless artwork, manipulating the international stock market or indulging in light blackmail, he’s at the spa with his besties or enjoying a casual sexual encounter. Used to being in control of everyone, moody journalist Andreas keeps Mr. Pink guessing from the moment they meet.
And Mr. Pink can’t resist — or stay away. Will he be able to get the guy and stay focused on his elaborate revenge, or will this notoriously successful man find himself going under?
The synopsis is pretty accurate which is why i was exciting to keep reading.
I wish the backstory was explored further, into developing the characters backstories.
The synopsis is pretty accurate so not gonna spend more time on that.
How does one pursue romance while getting revenge? Well, that is exactly what Mr. Pink is trying to do.
I think that the writing was very formal and clunky, and thus, distances the readers from *some* scenes
I didn't like that Mr. Pink's character wasn't consistent with the plot threads; calculative and manipulative in revenge plot, and emotional (emotionally constipated) in romantic plot. This creates friction between the plot threads. You could argue that it's a stylistic choice to represent how Mr. Pink feels about Andreas, but I'd argue that Mr. Pink has to acknowledge the fact that he's behaving differently.
I wish the backstory was explored and explained more. The author should've put more effort into it, instead of cramming this into one conversation and right in the end.
I'm not on board with some narrative choices, for example, I couldn't locate the "darkest hour" on the revenge plot. Some might say that this is very essential to a revenge plot. And it definitely was lacking enough for me to notice.
The Character work is a double edged sword for me. One one hand, I loved it initially, however I wish the author had continued developing Andreas and Mr. Pink's friends. Sad to say, but I saw a lot of potential there.
What I liked about the book is that the MC and the Love Interest were very unconventional (as far as I've read on the genre) and as a result, are very creative. I liked the dynamics between them and I found the revenge plot intriguing. Unfortunately this is the only enjoyment factor from me. But it wasn't too horrible, so this book gets a 2 stars from me. Just a tiny bit below the average of 2.5
I desperately wish I hadn't requested this book, as I hate to leave bad reviews. Hate, hate, hate it. In fact, I likely won't keep this review up on my review sites once I complete the obligation with NetGalley, as I don't believe in negative reviews. In my opinion, if something isn't for someone, then that's fine. But that doesn't mean it won't be for someone else, and spewing hate doesn't help readers find books they love.
I eventually DNFed this book after attempting to read it multiple times. I just couldn't. I hated the MC, and to be honest, I was fearful of how his relationship with Andreas was going to be. I was afraid there might be some non-con involved, and without any content warnings and no other reviews to be found where I could check for spoilers, I honestly can't risk my own mental health.
I apologize for requesting and being unable to leave a positive review. This just had far too many issues for me: technical, craft, style, plot, characterization... I'm sorry.
