Thank you so much to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've read a lot of New Adult/Contemporary books, but this book was not for me. This was very deep, and definitely lived up to the trigger warning contents listed.
The writing wasn't necessarily BAD, but it felt choppy and the story didn't flow. I personally didn't care for any of the characters, so that made it harder to get into the story for me.
This book certainly had a lot of triggers within it, and I must admit I found it rather difficult to get in to this story.
The writing style was good, however it lacked any real structure for me.
Complementary copy given for honest review and opinion.
This book took me to some deep places. I guess I didn’t expect that and so it was surprisingly intense. A good strong read for mature adults.
i never ended up downloading this, i've been reading other reviews on this and it sounds pretty good, so i might go get it~
Wow. I don’t think I’ve read a book like this in a long time. It states that there are triggers and should not be read by anyone under 18. And I’m glad it tells the reader this beforehand because I am sure this book isn’t for everyone.
It explores the state of the human mind at fragile moments that can either make or break you. There’s also drug use and mental illness as part of the triggers. But I think the part that mostly got me was the relationship between the hero and heroine.
It’s unhealthy to say the least but I knew from the blurb that it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Sex and drugs were the main focus and based solely on this. The toxicity in the relationship felt real to the point of almost DNFing the book. But I just couldn’t cause I had to see what was going to happen.
If you’re like me, the storyline and characters will hook you and drag you in. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t a flawed person. Some of her characteristics I felt could have been fleshed out a little more. But it’s still an interesting read.
I am going to rate it a 3.5. I do believe I will pick up the second book too. I want to thank Netgalley and BooksGoSocial allowing me to read the ARC.
Lots of trigger warnings in this book drugs recreational and prescription, tons of sex, and abortion.
With that being said the story was good and leaves you to figure out what happens in book two. This is basically erotica but it had a decent storyline if you truly want to know what college girls do in their freetime.
Sadly, I could not finish this book.
It comes with a very explicit trigger warning that stated:
Slated contains sensitive content dealing with mental illness and recreational drug use. It is recommended for readers eighteen years of age and older. There is conflict resolution, but the threads of tension continue in Book Two.
I have read and reviewed many NA books with warnings like this (some of them being all-time favourites) and I have never had any problem with them what-so-ever. I think my issue here was that the warning didn't list the trigger that lead me to have to DNF this book. The unhealthy relationship.
I found it extremely uncomfortable to read and frankly I just couldn't read on. Their relationship was built solely on sex and drugs, with no commonality between the characters other than that. I normally quite enjoy a very sex heavy read and the drug use isn't my favourite but not off-putting, but when it causes such toxic relationships I sadly couldn't read on. I wish I got to learn more about Sloane and BPD from what I did read she didn't have much interest to me as a character and her struggles with mental health seem to just be glossed over in favour of inebriating techniques.
I wish they had added a toxic relationship trigger because I really dislike leaving poor reviews since it's not their fault it triggered me. I would still recommend this book to someone other than myself in the hopes that maybe they would enjoy it more than I did.
