Callie, a restauranteur, is dragged into dangerous events due to the return of her ex-husband, after not having seen him for many years. He is an investigative reporter and it appears his investigation has got him into hot water. Help for her in this comes from an unexpected ally, although at a high cost!

I felt this book was quite slow at the beginning and took a long time to get going. This wasn’t helped by the number of characters introduced at the beginning of the story. I feel a lot was thrown into this book when it might have best been left for any future books.

Overall it was quite an enjoyable story however at times it fell into the trap of information overload at the cost of the pacing and tension of the story. I felt at times more interaction was needed from the characters to move the story forward in a more pacy way.

I felt there was plenty of hope in the story and overall enjoyed reading it and would like to read others if it does develop into a series. It would be good to see characters develop in future books and to see how the writing of the author develops. Danger in Plain Sight: a Callie James Thriller by Burt Weissbourd follows a by the book restaurant owner that gets pulled into some unexpected trouble by her ex-husband. He is an investigative reporter that dug into the wrong story. Callie does all she can to help protect him, including hiring an ex-employee that has some ties to criminals.

I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. It was a good read. I feel there could have been a little more in the character development aspect of the book. It starts off very strong but then characters start to act very differently from how they are developed initially. I am all for characters showing growth, but it seemed to happen instantaneously. The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job and made it easy to follow along.

The story started out really slow for me and there were a lot of characters to meet and get to know before anything of noteworthy importance happens. Callie James has rebuilt her life with her son after her marriage to a French philandering journalist ends with her pregnant and her husband not wanting anything to do with the child. Fast forward fourteen years and Callie has found success in Seattle with her restaurant and raising her son. Her life is moving forward as she wants it until the day her ex-husband comes into her restaurant asking for her help. She throws him out and after he is deliberately run down in front of her, Callie agrees to hide him. Getting to this point seemed to take a long time, but the story quickly takes off from here. She is confronted by some hired thugs looking for Daniel who threaten her and that’s just the beginning. Callie decides to seek the help of Cash, a former employee she turned in to the authorities for smuggling a few years prior. She knows he has connections and will know what to do.

I was really surprised Cash agreed to anything, especially helping Callie. He is pretty bitter and appears to carry a grudge. He demands an exorbitant amount of money and the deed to her restaurant in exchange for his help and, of course, Callie agrees. I really liked Cash and his associates, Doc and Andre. On the surface, they appear to be laid back without a care in the world but are really seasoned mercenaries who take their assignment of protecting Callie and her son seriously.

Things go from bad to worse when her restaurant gets blown up and it seems there is no where she can go and be safe. I understood why she was helping Daniel, but I really resented this character through most of the book. He cheats on her, flushes their marriage down the toilet and tells her she has no right to have a child he doesn’t want, but has the unmitigated gall to show up expecting her to help him because his latest investigative story has gotten the attention of some very bad people who are not going to sit back and allow themselves to be exposed by Daniel. Sucks to be you, Daniel. Luckily for him, Callie has a bigger heart and believes it’s important for her son to know his father.

My Final Verdict: I ended up enjoying this story, though the romance between Callie and Cash seemed ill-timed and out of place in this story. I feel that plot device would have better introduced in the second or third book. With their previous history, I had a hard time accepting their feelings were legitimate. I am curious to see where this series goes next and fans of the thriller genre will find this an enjoyable read.

Despite plenty of action and a narrator who creates a tone of excitement, danger, and urgency, I had a hard time with Danger in Plain Sight. There's a good plot and some great twists, but the pacing is greatly impacted by info dumps with every new character and descriptions that were actually too descriptive at times - and that's something I don't often say. Usually, I'm all about an author painting a picture with their words so that I'm transported to the where and when of the story. In this case, though, those detailed descriptions go a bit overboard, and I feel like this one could've done with a bit of restraint now and then. The narrator, Marnye Young, does a good job, and if the story weren't so bogged down in lengthy descriptions, the combination of a complex storyline and the excitement Young puts into her voice would've made for a gripping listen. As it stands, the story loses its edge too many times, and it was hard to stick with it.

Well folks, all good things must come to an end, and for me it was a string of 8+ star reads. I had this book in print already but when I got approved for the audiobook on NetGalley, I decided to listen to it instead. I really disliked this book. I feel like after seeing other reviews I am in the minority, but it just really dragged for me.

A few of my issues were as follows:
1. Too many characters
2. Two of the only three women in this books names were Callie and Christy. Why were these names so close?!
3. Callie continuing to want to protect Daniel despite him putting her life and family at risk is mind boggling to me, because she reiterates over and over that he cheated on her twice with the same woman and refused to have a relationship with his son.

The one thing I will give this audiobook is that the narrater did very well. Her French accent was believable but understandable and she really felt the emotion of the piece, so kudos to her.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to give Danger in Plain Sight my first 4/10 in a really long time.

This one had me from the start. Callie James has moved to Seattle to open her French restaurant after her failed marriage and 14 years after that marriage who walks in...her ex and with a wild story of needing help because he is in danger. Yeah, she is having none of that and sends him on his way and he is run down and thrown through the window. This is the start of this gripping novel that only gets more chilling and dangerous. He is being hunted and he has brought the danger straight to Callie's door. She turns to Cash Logan for help. With his help they figure out where the danger is coming from but also at great peril to themselves. This one is not for the faint of heart. There is death and kidnapping and bombing and terrorism galore. This was the first time I have read this author but definitely not the last. Oh, and I enjoyed this one in audio form and the narrator was perfection!

Restaurant owner, Callie James, is shocked when her ex-husband and father of her son shows up out of the blue and is almost killed. She finds out he is involved with investigating some bad people and they are going to keep coming after him. She agrees to hide him and help him figure out his situation in order for him to have a relationship with their son. With the help of a ex-bartender of her restaurant who also has a criminal past, Callie finds herself around dangerous people and in terrifying situations.
Overall, I felt this book just wasn't my cup of tea. It had a little too much action and organized crime for my taste. I liked the narration of the audiobook but the story had a lot of characters that were hard to keep track of while listening. I also felt that the romance was not very developed and it was a little unbelievable to me.

Danger in Plain Sight is a book which is entertaining, but not one I’d ever say you have to read/listen (I listened to the audiobook). It was action packed and fast paced, but I felt it jumped at times and didn’t always flow. As I said, overall it was entertaining. If you are looking for an action movie in book form, then I say give this one a go.

This books starts off really quickly and there are a lot of characters with different story lines to keep track of. The plot line was very interesting, was lots of twists and turns. I was intrigued until the very end. I really enjoyed the main character's (Callie) interactions with those around her and her world view was fascinating.

The narration for this audio book was incredible. The narrator handled the different accents and languages really well and created a different voice for each, which helped the listener keep track of who was speaking. Note: having characters named Callie and Kelly can be hard to distinguish in audio, sometimes I was unsure which name was spoken and had to rely on context of the story to determine which character was speaking or being referred to.

I read the description for this book and thought it would be an interesting book to read. For the most part the book was ok. The similar names in the book made it confusing at times.

Overall I found myself not caring about the story or the characters. Things that they did, seemed out of character and didn't seem to fit. More character development may have helped this.

I thought the narrator was good. I would listen to more books by this narrator. I don't know if I would read more books by this author though

With plenty of action to keep the story moving along, Danger in Plain Sight' is an interesting thriller with some memorable characters.

I listened to the audiobook version and this has a couple of flaws which would probably not be an issue with the book version. Firstly the Narrator's voice is a bit flat and the attempt at a French accent sounds more Italian to me. Secondly there are characters with very similar names that can get confused (Callie, Christy & Kellie)

Leaving aside the issues with the audio version I enjoyed the story which keeps you guessing at every turn.

I would've liked more character development for some of the side players to give it a bit more depth. I initially was sceptical about the romantic sub-plot but then realised it was necessary to set up the final end-game

I'd rate this at 4 stars but need to knock off a star for the audio version for the reasons stated above.

I would be happy to read further offerings from Burt Weissbourd in the future

Danger in Plain Sight is a multi-faceted thriller. Callie James is a very successful owner of a high end type French restaurant in Seattle. She's boss, and has strict rules for the restaurant, it's menu, it's employees; basically it's her way or the highway. But her organized world is about to take a dramatic turn in ways she never imagined when her ex-husband, Daniel, shows up for an unexpected visit after 14 yrs asking for her help. Cassie initially denies Daniel's request until she realizes that two assassins are involved, who have made an attempt on Daniel's life and not only want him dead or delivered up, but will take out Cassie, ruin her restaurant and the life she loves, and kill anyone who gets in their way. Cassie has no other choice, and is forced to ask for help from an unlikely source - her ex-bartender / ex-smuggler, "Cash" Logan.

Bad blood, hot tempers, threats, plenty of drama, tension, sarcastic humor, and surprising twists. A french cocktail combination sure to please. However, it was also peppered with vulgarity from multiple characters (which I am not a personal fan of), but in context, can be seen as realistic for the tense plot.

Audio Book Narration: While Maryne Young has a very pleasant and easy to listen to voice with plenty of inflection for Cassie and Cash, the French character, Daniel, had a heavy French accent which I am not accustomed to hearing. It was difficult for me to understand what the character, Daniel, was saying at times due to the heavy accent that was narrated, and it was even worse when Daniel whispered. I found myself backing the audio up and replaying the words on occasion to actually understand and / or hear what he said.

Danger in Plain Sight is a decent thriller.

Callie's ex-husband, Daniel, shows up after years. He is an investigative reporter that puts himself in dangerous situations. Daniel convinces Callie to help hide him since some people he is investigating are after him. Callie finds help in an unlikely source.

There is a lot of action in the book. There were so many characters that I got confused at times. It didn't help that some of the characters had similar names like Callie and Christy. I listened to the audiobook and don't think this would've been a problem if I was reading the book. The story was good, but the romantic part didn't seem developed enough for me. I think it would've been better to either have more of the romantic part or leave it out completely.

I love the description in this excerpt, “Tiles from Portugal..., bar from rural France...bronze pig over the door name Lulu” all the the descriptions help to create a very vivid picture of not only where Callie, the main character, thinks. We get a brief description of her appearance as a blond Northwest beauty. We know she has a restaurant and she has a son, Lou that she worries if she’s spending quality time with him. We get a sense that the restaurant is her life. There’s something that keeps wakes her up at night but we don’t what. From what we’ve read her life is ordered and a success but what could possibly wake her up in the wee hours of the morning checking and double checking her list.
The narrators tone does a great job of creating intrigue. This is a story I an eager to hear more of.
