I was a little nervous going into this book because I was not a fan of Marie Lu's previous book published this year. I was, however, a huge Legend fan and I loved Warcross, so I thought I'd give it a try. Turns out I ended up loving it! This was a classic YA dystopian that was not heavily focused on romance. I loved the characters, the world, the descriptions, everything! Talin was a fantastic main character and I thought it was really cool how she and her fellow strikers did sign language to communicate with each other. Talin's mom was also such a badass! I loved Red too and I found his Skyhunter abilities super interesting. I loved Talin and Red's bond! Jeran and Armin were fantastic and I would love to read more about them and their relationship. Adena was snarky and smart, and she knew about basically everything relating to science and weapons. Not the most realistic, but that's okay. I can't wait for the next installment of this book and to see what happens to everyone. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed Marie Lu's other dystopian books.
This was the most recent release from Marie Lu and from someone who consider her an auto-buy author that I think this might be her best book by date.
Yes, Ik the legend trilogy is iconic but this was a fast pace fantasy novel with some ghost and guns and swords and horse riding, and a "hiest" but not really one just breaking into a building. I will totally recommended this one to all of my friends Idk if I love this one more or less than The kingdom of back? Mmm we'll see which book of her will be in my 2020 favorite reads list....
This was the first book I have read... well listened to by this author and I definitely see why people rave about her. This book makes me want to read more of her books. I did meet her at a book signing before but I just didn't get a chance to read one of her books before I went. I received the chapter sampler from Netgalley but just recently got the audiobook from the Libro FM ALC program! So thank you to the publisher, Libro FM and Netgalley.
Just got to read a sample of it and can’t wait to read the whole Book! If you’re a fan of Marie Lu, you will enjoy this one!
This sample from NetGalley got me even more excited for this release! I can't wait to read the full book.
Marie Lu is a grade-level favorite and it can be hard to keep copies of her books on my classroom shelves. I got the opportunity to preview an extended excerpt of dystopian thriller Skyhunter, and I can't wait to get this for (at least) one of my students - and for me so I can finish it! As a Striker, Talin and company are part of the last defense the nation of Mara has against The Federation and its army of Ghosts. I am giving the excerpt 4 stars but will withhold my GoodReads rating until I finish the novel in its entirety! Thanks to #NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to get a sneak peek at #SkyhunterChapterSampler - I can't wait to finish it!
This was a really nice excerpt, but I would have loved to know it was an excerpt. It's not in the title nor in the synopsis even though other excerpts on NetGalley do have it noted somewhere. I realised when I started reading that it was very short and looked at the reviews where I found out this was an excerpt. Bit of a shame, but as I've mentioned - I did enjoy what I've read and will certainly be picking up the actual book!
I want to start by saying that I was given an ARC from Netgalley a few weeks ago- but I realized that it was just an Extended Chapter Sampler. As soon as I realized that I stopped reading. Chapter samplers just frustrate me, because they are too much of a tease and then I usually have to reread those chapters when I get the book anyway. Also, I don’t think it is fair to just review a few chapters. Since this book was only coming out a couple of weeks later, I decided to wait so I could review the entire thing.
I honestly love the worlds that Marie Lu dreams up. They are always original, creative and somehow, I feel like our world is always going to head in that direction. “Skyhunter” could be Earth 500 years from now.
With that pleasant thought: I really enjoyed this book. It had a nice touch of sci-fi. But wasn’t too much for those of you who don’t typically like that genre. Obviously, the characters she develops are always good. They are not necessarily my favorites of those she has written, but I like the relationship that Talin and Red eventually have. But I really wanted to get to know Talin’s friends, Adena and Jaren more. I feel like we just scratched the surface with those characters, mostly focusing on the development of Talin and Red. So, I am hoping we get to learn more about Adena and Jaren in the next installment.
My only regret was that I listened to the audiobook. I honestly knocked down my rating a star because of this. I LOVE AUDIOBOOKS. But listening to 11 hours of vocal fry is my nightmare. I listened to samples of the narrator’s other work and she does not do this in other books - so I can only guess this was a choice. But for me, it was grating to listen to- and frankly, it pulled me from the story, where I wasn’t as invested as I would have been if I had just chosen to read the book. Just bear that in mind if you are choosing between the two.
This sample is absolutely incredible. Marie Lu is a fabulous writer. I am disappointed because I thought this was the full book as that was it was advertised as. I noticed a lot later that chapter sample was added. That is just disappointing to be honest.
Four out of five stars. It lost one due to the confusion.
From the preview, it looks so interesting! I can't wait to read it! Marie Lu always writes amazing books and the concept behind this one sounds awesome!!!
Absolutely loved this preview! So far it seems like everything I've wanted, so I am excited to go out and purchase it!
My last book by Marie Lu was her gorgeous, spell-binding novel The Kingdom of Back. Despite how much I loved her foray into historical fantasy, I was delighted to see her return to the classic dystopian genre with this new novel. And the premise was definitely captivating!
The story drew me in immediately, as our protagonist Talin suffers a grief-stricken encounter with ghoulsih Ghosts, monsters who remind me of the horrifying Wendigos from the video game Until Dawn . These first few chapters established a world overshadowed (literally) by a compelling history, and characters who are already beginning to take on lives of their own. This excerpt left me on a tantalizing cliffhanger, and I'm excited to see where the story goes next!
I didn't love other books by Marie Le, but I became interested in this book for a number of reasons:
1. THE COVER IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING
2. The amount of authors I love who have been promoting this book
3. I wanted to give Marie Lu another chance
Here are the outcomes of this reading; I liked the world-building and characters of this book, I respect the refrain from tropes. I enjoyed this book.
Anyways, as we all know, here are my criticisms!
I understand this book was very short (in my standards), and that this book felt like it was on the lower end of YA. I cannot put out my hatred for deus ex machinas in books. There were too many conveniences in this book for my liking. I wish this book had been longer, more fleshed out, and had more overall depth. I would have loved more of the world, more of the characters, more detailed and sensical plot (in the sense of avoiding deus ex machinas). This is almost always my criticism with shorter novels, but overall I enjoyed this book. 2.75/5 stars! It was quite good, especially considering the fact that I don't have a taste for dystopian novels.
note; 3 stars is a raging review for me
I love Marie Lu and I'd read anything she wrote! After warcross I couldn't wait for her next series and this looks so so promising.
Can't wait till I get the whole thing!
This excerpt definitely made me want to read the full text. I will be reading the full book asap. The main character's backstory intrigues me. The politics and world definitely attracts the reader to want to know more.

I enjoyed the three chapters that I was able to read. I will definitely pick this book up to see how it ends! I love Marie Lu's writing style.
Loved this extended excerpt of Marie Lu's newest story Skyhunter.
It's got a bit of that postapocalyptic feeling to it's setup and even the first couple chapters made me so intrigued that I cannot wait to purchase this book and read all of it
A promising start (to a new series?) by Marie Lu! This beginning is quick and action-packed, reminding me of those dystopian, apocalyptic, sci-fi movies and video games, and Marie Lu captures the atmosphere and fights perfectly.
The first chapter is fast-paced and does not spare any moment to bring in stakes and consequences. I was pleasantly surprised to find that our main character, Talin, is mute since the Strikers' main job is to kill off Ghosts (I imagine like the titans from Attack on Titan) from the enemy land called the Federation.
I felt that this beginning glossed over a lot of important and traumatic events happening to Talin. However, this only is a preview and not the whole book, so there must be more to this story than I can imagine, and I can't wait to get my hands on a full, finished copy!
The story starts strongly and I guess that’s how your recognize a Marie Lu’s book.
Set in a post apocalyptic world where people have to fight to survive the Ghost, Marie Lu manages to pull the readers in her story with barely three chapters. The main character seems interesting and I really wants to know more about her.
Though what interested me the most was the world building and how well the action scenes were written.
Three chapters. That’s all it’s taken me to want to run to the closest bookstore and buy this book. Actually, that’s not true. The first chapter alone was more than enough to make me want to read the whole thing in one sitting.
We follow Talin a refugee living in Mara, one of the last free nations left after the Karensa Federation has pretty much taken over the world. Talin is one of the Strikers, Mara’s elite fighting force and the only ones capable of stopping the mutant soldiers created by the Federation.
The story is action-packed since the very beginning and you instantly connect with the characters. I was immediately hooked and can’t wait to read the rest!
P.S. Can we please talk about the cover? Whoever came up with this cover has my eternal admiration. It’s simple yet so powerful and utterly flawless.
