Beak & Ally may not be friends at first sight, but with a little persistence, Beak can become anyone’s friend. This is a great friendship story that is perfect for emerging readers looking to read something other than picture books. The format of this book is a mixture of an early chapter book & a graphic novel, making it even more student-friendly.

A goofy friendship story told in a graphic novel form. I loved this, it made me smile and felt so silly but still had a lot of heart.

Authors love unlikely pairs, be it animals we'd never see together or natural enemies. In this case we have an alligator and a bird. The alligator is a self-proclaimed loner. The bird is social. Ally likes quiet, Beak is noisy. Beak insists they will be friends. Ally pushes him away. Basically, that's the entirety of the plot and exactly what we would expect. The illustrations are pretty appealing. Great color and expressions.

Cute story about a new bird in town that befriends a reluctant alligator. The book is well illustrated and has a good flow. I read this with my 8 year old daughter and she really liked it.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.

This was too cute. I love Ally. He’s such a fake curmudgeon. I love Beak. He’s the eternal optimist. They are just perfect together! I love the illustrations. I can’t wait for book #2. My only complaint is that it was too short. :)

I think this book is a good start to what I hope is a series. It was a bit simple, even for beginning readers, but I assume the friends will have more adventures as the series moves on.

This book is great. It’s a simple story about friendship with one grumpy character and one sweet one. For the genre I think the art is really well done.

I received an electronic ARC HarperCollins Children's Books from NetGalley.
Looking forward to this new series by Feuti. The illustrations are the star of this book. The details included to create the scenery make readers feel they are in the swamp too. I love the facial expressions; they capture the unsaid portions of their feelings. The dialogue is simple and humorous for emerging readers. This book will fly off the shelves at elementary school libraries.

Beak is a talkative, friendly bird. Ally is an alligator that prefers to be alone. Beak just knows Ally would make a best friend, even if Ally isn’t so certain herself. When another bird steals Beak’s nest, Ally can’t help but be the friend Beak knew she was. Ally stands up for her friend and gets Beak’s nest back.

The dialog has some fun moments, but the illustrations are the star of the show. Kids will love them. I love how there were events that Beak imagined might happen, such as the two of them going to the movies. The illustrations looked different, more ethereal for those imagined scenes. The scenes portraying reality had illustrations with dark solid lines and the imagined scenes had light whispy lines.

I received an electronic ARC copy from the publisher and net galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Beak & Ally #1: Unlikely Friends is silly in the way that kids absolutely love. I will absolutely be purchasing this for my library. Based on this series opener, Beak & Ally is a great series to introduce kids to graphic novels, as it's a great alternative to more typical easy readers. Highly suggested.

You might be wondering "does children's lit need more unlikely animal duos?" and the answer is YES (when they are in graphic novel format). Beak & Ally has adorable illustrations and will encourage young readers. This is a sweet, simple, quick graphic novel that will entice fans of Narwhal and Jelly.
