The Night Train to Berlin takes a little time to get going but is a lovely story of loss and the the most of chances when they come up. The dual timeline of the present day and the 1940s works well. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
"The night train to Berlin" is a haunting and captivating love story that will stay with you beyond the last page. It is a book you won't be able to put down and one you'll be sorry has ended.
I loved everything about this book! I am personally more fond of historical fiction that has dual timelines and this was one of the best I have read in awhile. The characters were well developed and easy to connect to. The story was well plotted and wove the reader perfectly through the story. I would definitely recommend this book to historical fiction lovers.
A wonderful read, emotional and evocative. I loved the train element of both stories. A great piece of historical fiction.
I love historical fiction books that are set during WWII. And the fact that this was a dual timeline was even better. The author has done a great job of blending of the difficult aspects of WWII with a heartwarming romance. There are some strong and dedicated female characters that will touch you. The characters are well developed and you are drawn into the story that allows you to experience the challenges they faced during this difficult time period. The hope that Alex and Eliza will meet again after the war kept me invested in the story and turning the pages to get to the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and One More Chapter for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. The story was told between two timelines, one during WWII and one in the present day. There were things that tied them together like Eliza’s drawings and the clock,. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down, the war scenes were vividly told, as was the feel of the Cornwall train. I definitely recommend this book, 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you net galley for the advance reader copy of this novel. This was a historical fiction dual timeline novel of WWII and present day told with two couples. It took me a bit to get into this novel. The concept of the night train ride/reenactment wasn't clear to me at first. The storyline was good but lots of the details were not resolved like what happened to Nora, Nancy, etc. I would have liked to know those details. Overall a good read for WWII historical fiction lovers.
This was a brilliant read and is being featured on my blog for my quick star reviews feature, which I have created on my blog so I can catch up with all the books I have read and therefore review.

Two night train journeys one in 1940 and one in the present day are the settings for this fabulous dual timeline book. Great storyline, characters and concept make this an unforgettable book that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it
A great novel that will fascinate its readers. Well-written and with a great story, this one will be a big best seller.
I loved this dual time novel, and I don't think I've read one set during present day and the end of WWII so that was a nice change.
I was given a copy of The Night Train to Berlin by Melanie Hudson by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.ellie boards the night train to Cornwall and meets Joe. Explaining to him about the diary which was left to her. In 1944 Eliza boards the night train to Cornwall meeting Alex. Eliza is a war artist and meets Alex again in France.
A typical historical fiction love story.
A fabulous read! Two women in different times catch the night train to Cornwall. They each meet a man that changes their lives. We follow Eliza as a nurse and artist in world war two trying to capture reality on canvas, whilst shunning her aristocratic past. And Ellie in the present who is just scared to live, but desperately wants to. A cottage in Cornwall and a journal connects them as well as a clock stopped at 3.15. Great characters and plot, couldn't put it down
Initially I requested the e-ARC for this book and unfortunately I found the font extremely small on my e-reader where I had to zoom in each page. I thought it would be best to wait until I could get a physical copy and I'm happy that I did! I felt I had a way better reading experience.
I found the beginning definitely a slow build up but it wasn't long until my interest was grabbed. I loved the dual timelines and the character development was done very well - I love strongly driven female characters! This book was definitely an emotional one, I found myself growing attached to the characters and rooting for their love throughout the entire book.
Written beautifully and one I would definitely recommend to others who are looking for a historical fiction that contains an epic love story.
What a beautifully written book. Loved how it moved between modern day and wartime, with the stories intertwining. Definitely recommend
I was gifted this book via netgalley and this review is my own.
I was drawn to this book as i was born in Berlin and love the history of this city and the wars. This book did not disappoint. I loved the way the book altered between two time periods whereby the characters were interlinked. I found the balance really worked and did enjoy the focus being on Alex and Aliza.
The characters and their individual stories were portrayed so well and i was drawn into their worlds. I was kept on edge throughout wondering what was going to happen next. I felt like i went on a journey not only to Cornwall and Berlin but all the other places in between as well as imaging the night train. The journey back to the war was so well written that you really do go on a journey of emotions and can feel what the characters were feeling and experienced.
I feel like i need their stories to carry on to know what happened moving forward, Melanie Hudson is a new author for me however i absolutely loved her writing style and will definitely be seeking out more of her books.
A dual timeline novel, two love stories, two time periods. Unfortunately, I did not connect with the characters but I liked the concept of the Cornish sleeper train. A good escapist read but not for me.
I found this book a little bit difficult to get into, but warmed up to it eventually. Centering around two couples in two different timelines, it is through the writing that we see the parallels between them; one in WWII and the other in current times.
This book takes place in two timelines. The majority of the story is set during World War II, and follows Eliza and Alex. They meet on a night train to Cornwall, and although Alex offends Eliza, sparks fly. But there are many complications, most of all the war, and they vow to meet on a train to Berlin once the war is over.
The second timeline is set in present-day, where musician Ellie is also travelling on the night train to Cornwall. She has inherited Eliza's cottage from her great-grandmother Nancy, who specifies that Ellie needs to find adventure along the way.
I was immediately drawn into this story and the characters, especially those during the war. It was well written, and I will be thinking about it for awhile.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read the book.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.
A duel timeline story, mainly set during 1944 sees 2 couples meet on the night train from Paddington to Penzance. There are overlaps in their stories which are lovely to discover. My only complaint is the ending (no spoilers) doesn't feel complete.
