"To Sleep in a Sea of Stars" by Christopher Paolini is a space opera that follows the xenobiologist, Kirea Navarez, as she explore the League of Worlds.
DNF - I had a very hard time getting into this book, was too slow for me. The narrator did a good job, just the story couldn't catch me.
I really struggled to get into this book. I loved his Eragon series and couldn't wait to read his newest book, but it just didn't grab my attention. It is almost 900 pages and that could have been why. I am a slow reader and the number of pages was overwhelming. I did listen to the audiobook, but it did not help. I was just not invested in the characters at all, My mind just kept wandering. I saw tons of rave reviews on Goodreads so if you aren't intimidated by big books and you love sci-fy I would recommend this series, even thought it just wasn't for me.
You have to get about half way for this book to even start heating up aside from the first killing.
But ......400 pages before I get interested was a bummer but I get it he really knows how to drag something out.

There is a lot to love about this book. Epic sci-fi meets alien. A sassy ship mind. Lots of cool tech. Some really good friendships. Awesome narrator. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Unfortunately, there was some stuff that I thought could use some polishing. Firstly, the book definitely needed a better content editor. There was so many scenes that were just repeat of earlier conversations/fight scenes just between a different character or a different location. Many of these added nothing new to the plot, or if they did, it was something that could have been easily added to another scene. Considering we're talking a nearly 1000 page book, I think that would have made it a lot more accessible. There was also a lot of confusion on the delivery of the alien politics and creation/structure.
I think this book had a ton of promise, just needed more polishing. I cant wait to see what he comes up with next.
I really enjoyed the narrator. She had a great voice and did well distinguishing between characters. I only wish she had sung the parts that were songs rather than saying it.
This one a work of art that I didn’t appreciate enough. This book wasn’t for me, but I feel like it definitely has a fan base that loves it and I support that! The book, for me, was too long to enjoy. I felt like the story never really became something I was invested in, as much as I wanted to be.
Thanks to the publisher for sending me this ALC in exchange for an honest review
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is the longest book I've ever listened to, and while at times it did drag a little, the story line was intriguing and kept me engaged. I do think it could have been been parsed down a bit, or even split into a duet, which I think would make it more palatable for more people. There was a lot to digest and if you aren't/weren't able to listen to it for hours at a time, it had the potential to take you out of the story. But overall, I was entertained.
The world Christoper Paolini created in this story was pretty incredible- I love the idea of living up amongst the stars.
I really enjoyed the narrator of this book, Jennifer Hale. She did a wonderful job of bringing the world Christopher Paolini created to life, and what a world it was! With all the characters she had to voice, she really did a phenomenal job. I will have to seek out more books narrated by her.
I have to say that I was unsure about this one after seeing all the mixed reviews. It sounded really good to me, so I gave it a try.
I was not disappointed.
This book is fantastic! It was immersive right from the start. It was action-packed throughout. The cast of characters are amazing. I loved them all. Speaking of the characters, Jennifer Hale did a great job with the narration. Every character had a distinctive voice which I really appreciated. Some audiobooks are hard to follow if there is no difference in character voice. Not only was every character different, I thought the accents and different species made this even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this one.
I have already purchased the hardcover.
I had the pleasure of receiving an early copy of the audiobook of this new novel by Christopher Paolini. It is narrated by Jennifer Hale, in her audiobook debut as a narrator. She brought these characters to life, voicing about 50 characters and still allowing the reader to discern which character was speaking or acting. She did a terrific job with this and it worked.
The story by Paolini, who is known for his Inheritance series in fantasy writing, is a departure from that first This is purely science fiction and Paolini was careful to do his research into the scientific background which became the basis for his writing. I love that he was careful in making these decisions. The story is based on several “laws” that are as rigid as the law of gravity is to us. This kept the plot from drifting too far afield.
This is an expansive story that brings the reader on quite a journey through time and space. There are space travels and adventures as well as many different characters who are from a variety of backgrounds or who lead lives very unique to themselves. There is a feeling of a “typical” space/time travel sort of story and then it throws the reader in many different directions that ultimately bring the values of friendship, trust, empathy and sacrifice to the forefront of the story.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. There were short periods of time where I was not sure if the story was going to stay on a path that I would want to follow, but it delivered big time.
I foresee a sequel in our future.
Highly recommend both the written book (which I bought and read as I listened) and the audiobook. I enjoyed dually listening and physically reading it but there were times where I could only do one modality and it works in either option.

OK I really really wanted to love this book. I feel like everyone really enjoys it but I just couldn’t get into it. I listened to it via Netgally prior to it being released and got about 50% of the way done and I just felt like it DRAGGED on. It was a good story, but I felt like there was so much detail that I didn’t need. I tried to pick this book back up this month and I just couldn’t.
That being said – I am not a huge fan of science fiction and I think that is why I did not love this as much as I hoped I would. I wanted to read this book because of the author but this is more of a sci-fi book than it is fantasy. I think another reason I did not love this book was because it was some what realistic? Like don’t get me wrong, I know that we are not at this level yet for exploring like this book is, but having an alien organism take over my body like it does the main character here… it freaked me out too much.
If you really like aliens and sci-fi horror, this is for you!
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Who doesn't love everything Christopher Paolini writes?? This was AMAZING. I loved how it felt like you were really there at first contact. I love that he chose an older narrator to narrate the book.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
This is a long time anticipated book for me! I was so excited to read an Adult Fantasy by Paolini. I loved the premise of the book but I have to admit I was a bit confused with all the extraterrestrial elements along with space pirates. I would have loved some romance, this is totally what does it for me. I couldnt connect with the main character and that to me is super important to follow the story. Overall I was ok with the unraveling of this but there were a lot of plot holes that made me so confused. There was a lot of info that was just not linking together in my brain. I still look forward to read more by this author.
The narrator was amazing, but I couldn't really get into the story. This was my first Christopher Paolini book so I didn't have a strong relationship with the author prior to requesting it so it was more my issues than the book. I can see how others enjoy the story and I would fully recommend the audiobook.
In the course of her job, scientist Kira Navárez finds proof of aliens, and she is thrilled at the opportunities this poses for the human race. Her excitement doesn't last long as she realizes her proof of aliens isn't just proof, it is an actual alien. The next thing Kira knows, she is the cause of an intergalactic war between humans and aliens, and it seems that the fate of the human race is in her hands.
I was really excited to get an audiobook copy of Christopher Paolini's first book outside of his the world of Alagaesia. The first portion of this book was exciting and fast paced, but the rest of the book dragged along. There was a lot of world building to go through, and too many characters. And I really struggled with the aliens. Maybe I just don't love this kind of science fiction? I think this one is skippable. 3 out of 5 stars.
Thank you to @netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was an epic tale of exploration, daring, and adventure unlike any other experience. The narrator fully brought this story to life in ways I cannot express in a short review. This audiobook was completely captivating and spilled binding in its essence. It is a very long audiobook but it held my attention throughout and I never tired of listening to the voice that was showing me this wonderful world.
This was such a wonderful book from one of my favorite authors! I really enjoyed listening to Christopher speak with Hale too! That was a really great surprise at the end.
Thank you so much Netgalley & Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC- I highly recommend both reading & listening to this number to avoid missing details.
I loved how Paolini incorporated humor and witty banter into this story. It made the characters seem so real; they were reacting how you expect people in real life to react to such crazy and dire circumstances.
The narrator, Jennifer Hale, did an absolutely tremendous job bringing this story to life. She is a very talented voice artist and I was shocked to learn that this is actually her first audiobook. Talk about coming out swinging!
I don't usually listen to audiobooks but this narrator made this so easy to listen to and I really enjoyed the story. Can't wait to read more by this author!!!
This took along time to get into and a long time to finish. I liked it. The characters were likable.
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 and I was so excited when I received access to listen to the audio! I attempted to read To Sleep in a Sea of Stars multiple times and, while I found myself enjoying it in the moment, I was never eager to pick it back up. I found it to be too long and filled with unnecessary backstory. At some point I realized there were still over 24 hours left in the 32 hour audiobook and I knew I had to call it quits. I'm sure there was a great story in there somewhere, but unfortunately this book was not for me.
