"Seven Voyages" by Laurence Bergreen is a great social study read for middle schoolers. This well researched, the multi-layered text provides a unique opportunity to learn about ancient China and its imperialism.
This book was my first introduction to Zheng He, who commanded the grand Chinese treasure fleet, which first set sail in 1407. I was fascinated to learn about his voyages to explore and build alliances throughout southeast Asia. Bergreen writes in an engaging yet factual style. He is clear about what's known for sure and what is speculation. Written for middle school students, this is a great addition to the collections of explorer books in school and public libraries.
I've been intrigued by Zheng He since learning of him in AP World History, so I was ecstatic to be given access to this book on netgalley! Sadly, it's one I'll have to suggest people pass on.
It's 2020 and the word exotic needs to go away. It's one thing when the word exotic is used in a direct quote to exemplify a historical viewpoint, but I think every use was from the author.
Seven Voyages lacks cohesion and felt disjointed; each chapter unnecessarily reiterated what had just been discussed. I felt like I was reading a series of essays on the various voyages as opposed to one cohesive work.
