This is such a great resource for kids when it comes to explaining mindfulness. My kids have become a huge fan and love learning more mindfulness activities after reading this. It's a great step in the direction of teaching this to our children.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
The cover of this book really is adorable.
The illustrations were great!
This book was fantastic. Seriously.
My kids and I loved it.
I'd definitely purchase a copy and check out other books by the author.
This is an excellent book to share with children this year. Teaching them mindfulness early on is such a great idea, and because it's shared with familiar characters they'll enjoy it that much more.
Perfect. Sesame Street knows what they are doing. They use various muppets to illustrate different scenarios and what can be done to calm down or prepare an appropriate response. They also use a variety of children to help illustrate that this is something everyone can do, not just muppets. It’s simple, easy to understand, and just works.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! This was a good book with good exercises to teach children when they are angry, mad or sad. If a child needs help with controlling their emotions I would recommend this book! Thank you again, NetGalley!
Bravo, Sesame Street. I would definitely recommend this short book for those with young children. There is so much negativity in the world and children are frequently spending too much time in front of screens and being exposed to many subjects that they are too young for. It is important that even young children understand self care and how to care for their mental health and not just their physical health. It is important for children to understand and learn how to deal with anxiety early in life.
I got this for my daughter and she enjoyed the story. The pictures were great and the story was short enough to keep a toddler entertained.
Another perfect book for my family has dropped into our laps that connects with both of my kids! I have been struggling to have my kids sleep throughout the night. My daughter is learning about mindfulness in school. To have the Sesame Street characters discuss all of this - it is the perfect book for us!
Quick homework assignment before you read the book! Look up the Sesame Street video "Belly Breathe" with Common and Colbie Cailat. My kids have grown up with this song, and I laugh every time because Elmo looks like Frazzle, and I love Frazzle Monster. They have watched it for years, and that helped them understand this book.
My 2-Year Old's Review
To Karen Kenney - thank you thank you thank you! My son is at that lovely point where he loves to fight bed time. Part of the mindfulness of the book is putting your body to bed. We now say good night to every part of his body (including his bottom, which gives him the good night giggles). As we read the story, he listened and followed the instructions, whether it was a belly breathe or giving himself a hug. The next night, he asked if we could read it again. That's a win for this boy!
My 5-Year Old's Review
My daughter likes to pretend she is "over" Sesame Street, but the second the show comes on, or a book comes out, she comes running. This one was no different. After my son went to bed, I spoke with her about the book, and she said that she really liked it. We tied it into the mindfulness lesson from school and she fell asleep singing Belly Breathe to herself. This was after we had to find every part of her body, including her nails, to say good night to!
Mom's Review
5 stars! 5 book stacks! 10 out of 10! Whatever your rating scale, this book was great. We will be buying this one when it comes out on October 6th!
This book is a great addition to social-emotional learning collections. The pictures are friendly and concepts are accessible. I especially liked the glossary in the back.
Calm Monster Kind Monster is a Sesame Street guide to mindfullness book.
This little book helps young readers learn to recognize and manage their emotions. Small children follow along with their favorite furry friends and learn some easy ways to grow calmer, kinder and more mindful.
The illustrations vary between photos of real children and Sesame Street characters. The information is presented simply and is easy to follow and understand. This book gives great ways to help children realize their emotions and learn ways to cope with them.
I recieved a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an e-book from NetGalley.
I think this book is perfect for younger students, especially with the COVID pandemic right now. The book presents issues that may give children anxiety plus ways to feel better with breathing techniques and affirmations. There is a glossary and a list of other resources at the back of the book. I only wish this book was attractive to my upper elementary students. They won't respond well to the Sesame Street characters but the message is so helpful and needed.
I do plan to buy this book for my elementary library because I know it's needed.
This book opens by letting young children know that part of growing up is learning to recognize and manage emotions. The offer is extended to learn how to do this with some Sesame Street friends. What a good way to learn!
A mindfulness tip is given for every day situations, for example, falling asleep. The behavior is described then modeled by a Sesame Street character and then the child is invited to try. In the sleep scene, it is suggested that the child say good night to each part of their body working upwards from the toes. In another, milk is spilled and rather than feeling bad, Cookie Monster and children are invited to use positive self-talk. There are a number of additional situations packed into this short title.
This book is appealing and helpful. I recommend it for young children and a trusted adult to share together. It could also be used by early childhood educators.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely will buy this book when it comes out so I can use it with my toddler classroom. I love how many different Sesame Street characters are used to explain the different concepts of mindfulness, has vivid colorful illustrations, and how it uses short simple sentences to get the point across.
Sesame street is always great for helping kids with emotions. I love how this book teaches to be calm and mindful when they are feeling down. Ibalso loved the use of real pictures behind the characters.
My son had a third grade teacher who taught her students mindfulness. He has ADHD and learning mindfulness from her helped immensely. I'm so happy that Sesame Street is encouraging the use of this too! Calm Monsters, Kind Monsters is a fantastic introduction of mindfulness for children and parents. This book gives great ways to help children realize their emotions and learn productive ways to cope with them. Children will enjoy getting to try these mindfulness exercises with their favorite Sesame Street monsters!
Let me start off with saying I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!! I cannot wait to get a copy to keep at home and at school. Many familiar faces from Sesame Street appear in this book. Each with their own feeling and situation which caused the feeling. From there a coping strategy which they use is shared and then the reader is allowed to practice the strategy. This book is a great introduction to mindfulness and strategies kids can use. The language is clear and easy to understand while the pictures are bright and colorful. I also appreciate the fact that each of the situations the characters are in are relatable. For example, Cookie Monster spills his milk and feels embarrassed. This book allows for moments of talking and reflecting with your kid as well as time to practice and demonstrate their understanding of what is being read to them.
