Lisa Wheeler returns to her dinosaur tales with a fun look at all the many things different families do on thanksgiving. I find Wheelers books to be popular due to the nature of telling stories through dinosaurs. I feel this will be another fun hit for dinosaur lovers. There are of course many different thanksgiving stories to read, but add dinosaurs and fun thanksgiving activities and I feel this would be an enjoyable read. Wheeler describes all the different activities the dinosaur families do during their thanksgiving. What is nice is that the rhyming within the story do not feel forced and neither does the different activities that the dinosaurs partake in. I also particularly liked how the neighborhood seemed to come together and celebrate the festivities. This won't necessarily be likely this year to happen, however it is something to think about as a positive. I won't giveaway the ending, but I felt it wasn't necessary to the story. It very well could have concluded as the dinosaurs remember the wonderful day that they had.
I dare say this will be a success – I can't guarantee that, as not being from North America I can't really speak for how much it'll stand out in the 'representations of Thanksgiving using dinosaurs' genre. The rhyming couplets have an easy breathlessness about them, making the words really impact, and the illustrations are equally kinetic and lively. I would say that if this is your first book in this creative team's dinosaur range then it'll probably be a mite awkward working out which creature is which, especially as an abbreviated name is often needed here for the meter of the verse, but that seems secondary to a breezy and enjoyable look at the holiday. It ends by promising us Easter next – so expect pester power for that to be at quite high levels.
My toddler saw this one and it was a MUST read, immediately for her. She is dino-obsessed right now & this one did not disappoint! The bright, fun colors & cute storyline made it one I'm sure she'll be asking to read often!
This is a fun rhyming picture book about dinosaurs preparing for and celebrating Thanksgiving. It covers shopping, traveling, food prep, football (on TV and of the backyard variety), eating, doing dishes, and that inevitable turkey nap. Kids who love dinosaurs will be entranced by this one.
Super quick read with the most adorable and colourful illustrations. I also read this to a neighbor's kid who absolutely loved it.
Dino-Thanksgiving by Lisa Wheeler is a cute Thanksgiving story with dinosaurs as the characters! The story describes many of the fun Thanksgiving activities in which many families may participate, and the rhymes throughout the story are fun and engaging. The illustrations by Barry Gott were a perfect match for the text. I would definitely incorporate this into Thanksgiving themed activities with children.
A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cute book that emphasizes the importance of spending time as a family and at times, working together as a family. The Thanksgiving setting doesn’t play a big role. The illustrations were lovely. Perhaps a little long for some younger children.
This book is cute and fun for young kids and has very vibrant pictures. As a parent, I would like to see more the value of thanksgiving and what its about not just the fun things you do. When the Dino's are saying what they are thankful for, I would prefer my son or daughter to see the non material things in our world to be thankful for. This book would have been a great tool to use to give more meaningful thankfulness. It was definitely cute though.
