This was a DNF at 50%. It just moved at a very slow pace for me and I wasn't interested in our characters or our mystery. I just didn't care.
I enjoyed this one. The twist at the end was good and the story flowed well. I will definitely be recommending this one and I will be checking out more from this author.
I didn't realize this was book four of the series. I plan to go back and read the first three books before picking this book up again.
I’m really enjoying the Katie Scott series and this was another excellent read.
Still reeling from the shock of her Aunt’s murder, Katie and McGaven are back to dealing with cold cases.
This time, a missing girl, Candace Harlan, from a childrens’ foster home.
Demolition workers on the site of the old home report finding a body of a young girl matching Candace’s description, so the detectives race to the scene.
All is not what it seems however, and the story takes on a huge number of twists and turns along the way.
Running alongside the case is Katie’s life with Chad, and her continuing anxiety. We learn a little more about it and her time in Afghanistan.
Can’t wait for the next book.
This is the 4th book in a series that just keeps getting better. Katie is an independent, no holds barred, tough cookie and I love her! I couldn't put this book down, it kept me totally engrossed, The book is packed with suspense and twists and turns. I can't wait to read book 5!
Now here's an author I just love! All her books are just Brilliant! So when Jennifer Chase released her fourth book in this Detective Katie Scott series called ."Last Girls Alive"" I just had to put things on hold, sit in my comfy chair and open my kindle! then become apart of Jennifer's new book. WoW,
Last Girls Alive did not disappoint! it was amazing. The best one so far.
I highly recommend this series Excellent from the beginning till the end!
Big Thank-you to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion
This book was like a roller coast ride. It kept you on your toes. Full of action to keep the interest going. This book gives you the background of the perpetrator . Being able to connect with the character is a plus in my book.
Wow ! One of the best thrillers ever ! Loved this book ! I highly recommend ! Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book ! #Netgalley #Bookouture #LastGirlsAlive
Detective Katie Scott and Deputy Sean McGaven are working a case of a missing girl, case gone cold, when they get a call saying a body has been found buried on the grounds of a former home for children. Katie assumes they have found the body of missing teen, Candace Harlan who's been gone for 5 years.
Surprisingly, the body is not that of Candace. When the medical examiner finds a tattoo across the victim's back, the message seems to be that of a hunter stalking his prey.
The next day, another girl's body is found, with the same message across her back. Both girls had been residents of the children's home.
What did they know .. or see ... that would have someone hunting them down one by one? These two girls will not be the only victims ... more bodies will fall.
The twists and turns encountered resemble a roller coaster ride, going first one way and then the other. Characters are solidly defined and there are multiple suspects to watch. Who has a secret big enough to kill to keep it secret?
Katie is a wonderful character. She did two tours in Afghanistan and now suffers from PTSD when stressed .. and these days she's stressed to the max. Add to that stress, a new undersheriff watching her every move in the hopes that Katie messes up to justify closing down the cold case unit.
It's full of action, especially when both Katie and Sean are targeted by the killer. All roads lead to an explosive conclusion. Although 4th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This is the fourth book in the series featuring Detective Katie Scott and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It can be read as a stand-alone but obviously is more enjoyable when you have read the first three books. The book opens with a young teenage girl, Candace, running away from Elm Hill Mansions, a foster home for young girls. Five years later Katie is called to investigate the case of the body of a young woman being discovered in the grounds of the now derelict Elm Hill Mansions. The naked body of the young woman had words Hunter Gatherer inked into her back. What could this mean? Katie is convinced that it is the body of Candace and is shocked when she is informed that it isn’t Candace. Who is the girl and is there a connection to Candace? When the body of another young woman with the same markings turns up Katie realises that she is dealing with a really complex case and starts trying to contact any of the other girls who were in the home at the same time, Katie is still having issues with her personal life and is still traumatised following the death of her parents and also from her time in the army,. The book is told mainly in chapters by Katie with a few from the perspective of the killer giving insight into his abusive childhood, I thought this a fast paced thriller, with lots of different threads that all came together well at the end. I can’t wait for book number five in the series. A very enjoyable book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Last Girls Alive by Jennifer Chase is the 4th book in the Det. Katie Scott series. Its a series that has grown on me & this book too like the previous three was as amazing it gets! I like that these books explore cold cases although the timeline in this was a bit confusing to me at times. Its always interesting to see cases solved that would otherwise have gone unsolved. However in most cases she encounters Katie almost always has had a connection to a present case or incident. It would be very interesting to see Katie solve a case that has gone truly cold. As for characters Katie has always had the most interesting background of being in the military & this has held a fascination for me right from the start. Her battles with PTSD & her journey to calming those battlefield demons is what makes her character so believable & strong. It will be interesting to watch her as the story progresses. I love that there is a sense of mystery when it comes to the love of her life & I'm never quite sure if & when there will be a twist in there. But that makes this series all the more interesting!
I look forward to reading the next!
Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture & Jennifer Chase for an arc!
As other great Jennifer Chase read! Moved the story line of the series forward, but could definitely be enjoyed as a standalone! Recommend for anyone who enjoy detective series.
thank you for the opportunity to read this latest book, for a book in the middle of a series you may think it won't keep you gripped but it does easy to follow and still surprises you, didn't have any issues following the story, recommended
Hi, I lost the eARC of this book so I won't be able to review this book. I hope you understand. I really wanted to read it but unfortunately my phone got formatted and I lost the copy.
This is book 4 in a great series but it can be read on its own without missing out. The main characters are great and so lovable. Cisco really adds to the story and I love Katie and McGaven’s relationship. It’s so refreshing to have a male/female due that are just friends but still have great chemistry.
This book kept me guessing and the twists and turns really added to the tension. I was kept guessing until yet another dramatic ending but the pace did slow in places. Katie’s personal life and relationship with Chad seemed to distract from the story instead of adding to it. Their relationship is just a bit flat. The addition of the new undersheriff Dorothy also seemed a bit of an afterthought. She threatened Katie's job as well as trying to be her friend but nothing really came of it. All in all though it is a great police procedural series.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This is the fourth book in a series, but the first one that I have read and I had no difficulty jumping right into the story and the lives of the characters. The protagonist is Detective Katie Scott, a kick-butt, take-no-prisoners kind of policeman who wants to do her job to the best of her ability, even if it means skirting on the edges of what her uncle, the sheriff, wants her to do. As a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, Katie has nightmares to contend with and a service dog Cisco who rarely leaves her side. I fell in love with the trustworthiness of Cisco. I also liked Katie’s partner McCaven who had to be quick to keep Katie out of all of the many dangerous situations that she was determined to throw herself into. The basis storyline was one of young girls turning up murdered with a tattoo on their backs and all of them have a foster home in town in common. The home itself, Elm Hill, is creepy and adds to the mystery of the story, especially since we find the former head of the home in prison at the beginning of the tale. With plenty of twists that made my head spin at times, this book is among my favorite suspense thrillers that I have read this year. I did want the loose end tied up about the new deputy chief who came in and warned Katie that she was on probation and could lose her job. So, what’s up with introducing her character and then...??? Maybe I have to read the next book to find out, but that’s the reason for the four stars instead of five. All in all, this was a fantastic addition to books that I highly recommend to fans of suspense thrillers who don’t mind a little bit of gore and a ton of fast action.

I recieved a copy from netgelly. I had never read anthing by Jennifer Chase before and hadn't realized this was book four in the series. But can easily be read alone or out of order. I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing colourful cover and interesting sounding blurb. I was also drawn to the the book as the write up read that fans of Melinda Leigh will read in one sitting. This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Katie. The characters were well defined and realistic. I loved the fact that there was a strong female role model, being female myself. Katie is definitely a very likeable character who is suffering ptsd and is a force to be reckoned with. I loved her relationship with her partner Gav who is also another great character. I cannot wait to read more about the them all and follow their relationships!
Overall a nail biting, suspense packed action crammed thriller that keeps you on edge. I would recommend this book.
This was a good solid thriller - intriguing premise and not as predictable as I thought it was going to be.. I warmed to the main character fast and that helped me get pulled into the plot fast. It was a definite page turner even though some of the plot twists and events were a little unbelievable.
Still reeling from the events of the last book (Flowers On Her Grave), Detective Katie Scott and her cold case team find themselves with a double homicide in the opening chapters of Last Girls Alive. Both victims appear to be young women who previously resided in a care home for troubled teens but there may be a mistaken identity, and why do they have a phrase etched into their backs...?
Last Girls Alive is the fourth book to feature Katie and her team. As well as the murders, there are also unpleasant stories of abuse suffered by the girls in the past. The bodies are described with forensic detail which is objective rather than emotional.
There is plenty of action, suspense and drama in the plot as Katie investigates the murders. Her bravery is seemingly endless but she is putting her career and her life in peril for not following rules.
I had absolutely no idea about the motive or culprit until the reveal at the end. We do see flashback chapters or an abused chikld ut the main focus is on the police team and their investigation.
Katie's relationships have been rocked by the previous case. She is closer than ever to McGaven and they rely on each other in Last Girls Alive for support and even their lives. Cisco, Katie's army dog gets a starring role in this book which made me smile.
Overall, Last Girls Alive was an enjoyable police thriller. It would work as a stand alone book but there are some spoilers if you haven't read the previous books in the series.
I am loving this series, it gets better with each new book. This has me gripped from the start and I loved the ending
