The setting of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is stunning. There is the beauty of the nearby ocean, with beaches filled with reddened sand. And the smell of the lush greenery and delicate flowers that are abundant during the warm months. This is quite a famous classic and I was so thrilled to see that there was a manga copy available since this provides a new arena for this story to be told, in an addition to all other adaptations (e.g., film, audio theatre, graphic novels, etc.)
Now, let’s discuss the manga itself. The manga is quite true to the book, which is the first of many books about Anne Shirley. The original book itself was written in 1908 and covers Anne’s life from the age of 11-16 in which you see a lot of personal growth and development of her character with time. The manga does a great job of illustrating Anne, her adoptive family, and other characters, as well as the home in which Anne lives. I was very impressed with the care that was taken to ensure the setting and scenery appeared accurate. Some characters have differences in appearance and I think those distinctions were translated quite well using manga artwork!
Anne has a very distinctive voice and doesn’t quite talk or act like anyone I’ve read about in any other book - and I think this was very well captured by the manga, which appears to be quite similarly and well adapted from the original dialogue. In fact, all of the characters - their dialogue and actions feel quite authentic!
I also appreciate the ancillary information at the end of the book which includes Crystal C. Chan’s thoughts and process on adapting the book: setting the focus, processing the details, Easter eggs, notes on incorporating feminism into the manga, and the ways in which manga is a strong medium for presenting the book.
In my opinion, this is the most entertaining, fun, and creative adaptation I have read of Anne of Green Gables that also manages to stay quite true to the original book. It was a total joy to read and I’m so happy it is in illustrated form since I think it has the potential to create an impact on young readers and fans of manga, alike!
I loved it! The drawings are so cute, and the story follows exactly what happened in the classic. Anne is such an amazing and quirky character.
Let me tell you this now, but Anne of Green Gables is one of my all time favourite books in the WORLD. And I will buy every format, every version, every rendition of this story if you give me the chance~
SO when I saw that there was a manga edition (cough, one of my all time favourite formats), was it any surprise that I requested it? Of course not!
And I can confirm that I was happily satisfied. They absolutely did the original story justice, and the artist does a great job of illustrating Anne's happy, dream-like, and wonderfully friendly nature. It felt like I was rereading the book itself but with the addition of stunning artwork.
If you enjoyed the original Anne of Green Gables then I highly recommend you check this out! It's perfect cozy read (and you might even shed a tear)!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers sending me the eARC in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
I Love Anne of green gables, and this Manga is súper cute 😍🫶🏻
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the copy
Excellently illustrated and a staple of consistency in innovation and technique from this excellent graphic novelist! I can't wait to see what comes next.
Very cute and very well drawn !!! I would definitely keep reading them and get my own physical copy !!
I've been getting into graphic novels at the moment and this book is perfect for me! I love Anne of green gables and I'm so happy that i get to read while admiring the illustrations.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this eARC. All thoughts are my own.
I love Anne of Green Gables, no matter the format—book, anime or movie. It was my first time reading it as a manga adaptation, and I didn't know I could fall even more in love with it. It was really nice to see the illustrated story, and I cannot stop recommend it enough.
This is the manga adaption of the children's classic Anne of Green Gables
I am a person who is intimidated by all classics. Even if it's children 's classic I generally stir clear of it. For me this was an easy and quick way to read a well loved classic. It gave me a bite size piece of the classic, so that I can try out if it's worth my time & energy.
I loved the story, which was simple and sweet. It made me want to dwell more in this world of Anne. So for a me it had a positive effect as I now want to pick up the unabridged version of the book & read it.
The picturization was also top notch, you will definitely fall in love with the characters. My personal favorite was Matthew.
Overall a decent 3 ⭐ read
As an avid fan of classics, I am very much aware that I am a fool for not reading Anne of Green Gables yet. This book has been around for years and I’ve done a terrible job of always trying to avoid it with no particular reason at all.
I’ve been on a reading slump for quite some time now and I decided to read a little bit of everything and while I’m browsing thorough Netgalley, I found this gem.
This book is perfect for those people who’s trying to get out of a reading slump or those who doesn’t have the energy to read an entire book of classics as of the moment. This manga version, which I believe is the only one, is a good 1 to 3 hour read (depends on how fast you read) and is perfect for those whose into manga.
I haven’t read the original Anne of Green Gables yet so I don’t have much to say but this book gives the idea on what’s inside the book in a very subtle manner.
I fell in love with Cordelia, the moment I first met her on the train station where Matthew picked her up. She was bubbly, talkative and a child whose imagination will take you places. Anne with an “E” is a very strong woman, being able to surpass everything she’s been through. I am deeply awed by how much her relationship with Marilla had grown over the past years that she’s with them and I am very much ecstatic on how much she was loved by both Matthew and Marilla.
I love her friendship with Diana and I loved every minute I spent with them both though we really have to make sure what drink little miss Anne will serve us. Their friendship is one of those worthy enough to treasure for a lifetime. They’ve been together through thick and thin, Diana being supportive of Anne and vice versa. Her rivalry with Gilbert is a healthy one. I know it sounds ridiculous and weird but for me it’s a healthy one because both Anne and Gilbert had managed to gain from it.
I love every bit of this book, every detail, every adventure. I love Green Gables, I would never ever give Green Gables up if ever Marilla decided sell it to me personally. Anyhow, I’m not going to deny that I ugly cried during the end of this book. It was bittersweet and I have this strong urge to hug everyone in the book, especially Matthew. Especially him.
The illustrations are superb and the details are top notch! As someone who’s been an avid fan of manga, this is something that I would keep in my bookshelf. It’s amazing! A++++++!
I will never ever forget this book and this now have a very special place in my heart; a place where it’ll be cherished forever. So I want to thank Netgalley and UDON Entertainment for this book. I would’ve missed this warm and wonderful feeling Anne Shirley of Green Gables had given me if it wasn’t for your generosity.
“And there’s one thing certain, no house will ever be dull that she’s in.”
I am a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables. I read it multiple times growing up and was in two different productions of the play. I was all over it when I saw that I could read a manga version.
First, I think it is fantastic that there are manga versions of classic titles. The artwork is beautiful and the story is the same as it always has been. Some people may not like it because it is different but I loved it. What a new, fun way to read an old friend.
Highly recommend!
Thanks to NetGalley for the read!
I remember watching Anne of Green Gables as a kid and I was curious about how it would hold up in a manga. Well this did not disappoint. I felt that all the important parts of the original story were there and so beautifully illustrated. It was a well done and beautifully designed manga that made me wish I had this when I was studying it in grade school. I think educators could use this as supplementary material alongside the original comfortably. 5 stars for me. Thanks to NetGalley and Manga Classics Inc for a chance to review this wonderful piece.
Anne of Green Gables has had a place in my heart since I first watched Anne With an E on Netflix, and I absolutely fell in love with the story and characters.
The first book in the eight book series by L. M. Montgomery follows Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl taken in by siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. The book follows Anne as she grows from a wild, imaginative girl with a ferocious temper to an intelligent and kind young woman, all under the care of Matthew and Marilla. It’s a beautiful and heartwarming coming of age story. It sometimes reads as a parental guide, like most childrens books at the time did, but if you overlook the obvious etiquette lessons you see a soft, slow, and gorgeous story of Anne finding her place in the world.
Now, this is a revamp of the original story, as it takes the 1908 novel and turns it into a modern-styled manga. Now of course this manga is a bit shorter than the original, and because of that it does cut away some of the original story, but the main story is still there, and I feel the things the storyboarder decided to exclude did not have a major effect on the story overall, and that they actually chose the things to cut quite well. The only problem with the cutting of certain storylines is that some chapters become exceptionally short, only lasting one or two pages, which did give me a sense of whiplash at some points, but overall it did not have a negative effect on the story.
Some of the characters did not really fit well into the manga style, mostly Matthew Cuthbert. In the novel he is portrayed as fairly stoic and quiet, but with the exaggerated expressions of the manga art style, this feels a bit off. However, the manga style suited Anne’s character so well. I was blown away with how perfectly she fit as she is such an animated character. It was also very nice to be able to see the thoughts of some of the main characters, as it made them feel more real and likeable than if we had just gotten their straight dialogue; this especially applies to Marilla, as she comes off as very cold and unfeeling for the first half of the novel, but seeing her thought process really helped bring her to life and show the reader how much she loves Anne.
Lastly, I absolutely love the accessibility that the manga classics series brings to dyslexic readers and readers who struggle to read classics normally. The meat of the story is still there, and even though you lose the descriptive writing, the gorgeous art and animated characters make up for it splendidly. I could see myself recommending this series to people who want to see what all the fuss is about with some popular classics but don’t want to deal with the sometimes difficult language.
Overall I highly recommend this book, and pretty much any adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, and I really hope they decide to adapt the rest of the series into manga as well.
I love this! The art is stunning especially for the characters! Gilbert looks like someone from Digimon, and Matthew is lovely, and that brought me a lot of memories of my childhood when I love watching animes. The nature art is cool, they just look like what we get from the book.
I've never read the novel by L. M. Montgomery, so I can't comment on this manga adaptation's faithfulness to the original story. But what I can vouch for is that it was a wonderfully charming story and a quality production by the adaptor/illustrator team.
Anne is... a complicated child. Her antics, her overly active imagination, her feisty temper, her lack of tact, her kindness, her desire for a better life, her vanity, and zest for life all make for a great character. But she can be exhausting, too much a handful for quiet Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Many would be tearing their hair out at a girl like her, she's trying on people's patience, but at the same time, life in a sparsely populated part of the Canadian boonies would be so much duller without her. She's not a perfect girl, she's petty, stubborn, flawed. She makes you roll your eyes, and she makes you laugh. She needed both the kind indulgence of Matthew and the strict discipilne of Marilla to become the better girl she is by the end of the story, for sure. She influences the adults and is in turn influenced by the adults, and it's for the better in the end.
Crystal Chan's style is a bit more "chibi" than the manga style I like best, but it's perfectly suited for this story more than for the other Manga Classics she's drawn for, because of the tone and atmosphere of the story. She was able to capture Anne's expressiveness, and above all the lovely Prince Edward Island settings. Out of curiosity, I googled the place, and it's beautiful! That is seen in the art, too.
I've always loved the story of Anne of Green Gables and was curious how different a manga would be. While the art is cute and it keeps to the important parts of the story, I just don't get the true Anne Shirley in all her awkwardness, uniqueness, and quirkiness. The classic character becomes a bit more stereotypical in looks (it's hard not seeing her carrot-colored hair), but the dreaminess and classic lines are still present. This would be a fun read for younger kids and those who have not read the original would probably enjoy it more than I as I was already familiar with the story line.

First of all, I want to thank NetGalley for this book !
Then, you should know that I knew absolutely nothing about this classic before reading it. I haven't read or seen any adaptations. So I was on a total discovery. But ! I've been hearing about this book for several years and it's been only positive reviews. Also, my expectations were very high.
And inevitably... I was slightly disappointed by my reading.
I want to say that the drawings are really beautiful and that at the graphic level, it was very appreciable !!
However, my problem is with the story. I didn't really appreciate Anne who made me roll my eyes very often. And I'm not attached to anyone in the end, even if some are appreciable.
The messages that have passed are very beautiful, and I can understand why everyone loves this story so much. But with me, it just didn't happen unfortunately.
Maybe I'll try to read it again in a different format in a few years; we'll see.
It remains a book that I can recommend, because I know that it will please many people !
Faithful graphic novel version of the beloved classic about Anne Shirley, the imaginative orphan girl of Prince Edward Island. Younger readers will find it an accessible and entertaining read.
The manga adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. The art is cute. It will appeal to my students and get them engaged in a classic story. It has been a long time since I read Anne of Green Gables, but I didn't notice anything left out. It is a well done adaptation of the classic and was designed with education in mind. I love all the extras at the end of the book that walk us through the process of adapting a classic.
Quick Summary: Beautifully illustrated and so well done!
My Review: Manga Classics has done it again with this beautifully illustrated story on Anne of Green Gables. I have nothing but praise for this graphic rendering. It was so well done. It evoked just as many feelings as when I read the novel and watched the PBS special. It pulled on my heartstrings. That gets an A+.
This book will do much to introduce a new generation to a beloved classic. It will also provide a fresh take for those who are children at heart.
