An interesting adaptation of the classic Anne of Green Gables. I believe this adaption may reach a section of modern audiences in a way to the classic may not.

I read Anne of Green Gables a few years ago, but quite recently watched the Netflix adaptation. While the book became an instant favourite, the adaptation just cemented my love for Anne Shirley! Since finishing the adaptation, I have been wanting to re-read the book, but it never was the right time. I know it has been some months since this Manga Classic was released, but I just had to read it.
If you have never read Anne of Green Gables, this book was originally written by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908. Anne of Green Gables is a story of an orphan girl who is adopted by the brother-sister duo, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. High-spirited Anne with a hyperactive imagination, soon makes herself home at Green Gables and becomes the most important part of Matthew's and Marilla's life. We see Anne navigating through life experiencing myriads of emotions while growing up.
Now coming to the Manga Classic adaptation of this book, If classics are not your thing, this adaptation is the perfect way of reading classics. Beautiful illustrations in the Manga style with just the right bite-sized scenes from the book, what more could you ask for? The essence of the original work is not at all lost, in fact, it suits to see Anne with her large expressive eyes. And not only that, Green Gables, the school, Anne's journey from the station and many other such details are so beautifully captured, it just enwraps you into the beautiful world of Anne right from the beginning. And since it is a Manga, it's fairly quick to read.
If you have enjoyed the original series, you would definitely love this version as well. And if you are reading this for the first time, you are definitely in for a treat!
Could not recommend it enough!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

I haven't read the story of Anne of Green Gables, but I have seen the show Anne with and E. Meaning, I knew what I'd be getting into, sort of.

This manga is absolutely beautiful. The artistry is divine, and the way it portrays the story is phenomenal. I would highly, highly recommend this manga to anyone.

However, for anyone who hasn't heard of Anne of Green Gables, here's my description of it:

The story, and manga, and show focuses on a young orphan who is adopted by Mr and Mrs Cuthbert, two siblings who are looking for a male orphan to adopt, in order to help them with their farm. However, they receive Anne instead, and after several twists and turns, they adopt her, and she begins her new life at Green Gables. The story is sweet, and sad, and so, so brilliant. I loved the show with my whole heart, and this manga even more so. Do yourself a favour, and read it!

Rated: 5 stars

Thank you to netgallery for allowing me to read this manga in exchange for an honest review.

Wow. I can't imagine a better job done adapting Anne of Green Gables to manga format, and I say this as both a lover of manga and of the original material.

Anne of Green Gables holds a very special place in my heart and my life. It was one of the very few bright spots of my childhood growing up, it got me through some very dark times and I might've turned out a much darker individual without it. It remains one of the things I remember the most from then, elevating it to an almost sacred status. I've been fortunate that the only adaptations I've seen of the book have been exceptional, such as the 1985 movie and the Netflix original series Anne with an E. These adaptations have made my standards even higher, so I had quite a few trepidations going into this manga. Truth be told, while I've consumed a LOT of manga, I didn't think that the format could work with a book that means so much to me.

I was wrong.

Sure, there are things that I wish were different, but these are small and quibbles, really. Manga, or any visual media for that matter, need to show more than what's being said with the words, for instance the characters' expressions. There were a few instances in which I didn't agree with the manga's interpretation of a character's expression at a particular time, but for the most part everything was very in line with the way that I'd imagined things, in my many many perusals of Anne of Green Gables. I love the way that Matthew's eyes are depicted, I love the subtle aging of the characters, I love the beauty and details of the backgrounds, but most of all I love that this manga feels every bit like the book that I treasure. Even though I knew it was coming, I still shed tears at Matthew's death. Even though I knew it would happen, my heart still swelled at Anne and Gilbert's reconciliation. Marilla is depicted perhaps a bit softer than she is in the original book, but I love the attention paid to her character and her past. Anne's quirkiness, over-the-topness, past loneliness, and uniqueness shines through perfectly.

It's very well done and gracefully weds the beauty and wholesomeness of a beloved classic with a genre that seems so far away in style.

This was my second manga classic but it definitely won’t be my last. I’m always curious about the plot of classics, but I never enjoy reading them because of the wordy and dull writing that most classics have. The manga classics fill me in on what happens in classics in a more engaging and interesting way, so I am very grateful for this series.

Anne of Green Gables was a book that I always hear praise for. It seems to be one of the most well loved classics. Unfortunately I don't love this story as much as everyone else does. I loved the manga format and I loved the artwork. I also loved Gilbert, but the story as a whole wasn’t too interesting. It was a lot of snippets from Anne’s life growing up and it didn’t seem to be one unified story with a clear plot. The pacing was fairly slow for a manga format, but I got the sense that it would’ve been even slower in the original Anne of Green Gables book.

There seemed to be some outdated stuff in this book that I wouldn’t necessarily want kids to be reading, but there was feminism in this story as well so it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were things like making such a big deal out of wanting a boy but getting a girl instead and everyone (including both Anne and the adults) were very judgmental of Anne’s appearance when she was a child. There were feminist themes throughout this manga though as Anne was able to change and become a positive person in Marilla’s life despite being a gender that Marilla had not initially wanted.

If you haven’t read a manga classic yet, I highly recommend checking one out. This one wasn’t my favorite out of all the manga classics, but I still thought it was an okay read and I know that I probably wouldn’t like the original Anne of Green Gables book as much as this manga.

I really enjoyed reading this - I read Anne of Green Gables as a kid, and I really did not remember much of the plot. I remembered that there were HUGE paragraphs of her talking, hahahaha! This was nice. Some grammatical errors and the art was slightly blurry, but that was a disclaimer presented at the beginning of the book.

Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite stories. This manga was the first I’ve read and it was a great way to start! It followed the original story closely. I enjoyed the art, but would’ve preferred it to be in color. The artist did an incredible job with emotion though.

Fantastic story, I havent read the original book but it was so good! The art was cute too.
We have a lot of complex and interesting characters in this story, I normally don't read classics but this one looked nice.
It's longer than some manga, it's about 320 pages long and it's really easy to read. It could be a good way to make children more interested in classics. However, there was some moments in the story where it looked like they wanted to hurry too much telling the story.
Overall enjoyable, 4/5 from me.

Anne of Green Gables is one of the classics, especially in North America. By now, the language used is quite dated, which might make it a challenge to read for people who are not strong readers or who maybe read in English as their second language.
This Manga version helps a great deal with that. It’s easy to envision the story and setting and this helps a great deal in understanding the story. Definitely one to add to the shelves in my classroom.

I’m a fan of the old Anne of Green Gables movies.
This manga version is perfect way to keep the story alive but in a different format.
Staying true to the plot.
Clean read.
I absolutely love the art style, Anne looks so cute!

This is a great manga adaptation of a classic. I kind of expected it to cut down some sections for length but it doesn't drop any sections at all. The benefit of the manga version is the facial expressions that are conveyed.

I received a free digital ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Manga Classics: Anne of Green Gables follows Anne, a young girl adopted by an older brother and sister to assist on their farm. Despite initially believing themselves to be receiving a boy they decide to allow her to stay and we watch Anne (with an E) grow up throughout the story. I am a huge ‘Anne of Green Gables’ fan so am always a little worried with new adaptions, but this was so well done and Anne’s spirt was caught perfectly.

The book contains beautiful artwork and I am very much looking forward to continuing this series and enjoying more retold classics!

I am such a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, so when I was browsing Netgalley and saw it as a read now option I got excited! I think having a Manga edition is a great way to get younger readers into the story. The illustrations are beautiful and capture the original heart and quirks of Anne and her friends and family.

I'd say I really enjoyed it! I loved the classic original book and the movies, so I gave this manga version a try, especially as it's an ARC and am supporting the creators. I'd say they did a. very good job! The illustrations that are manga style are very beautiful and cute, the story is so close to the book, it felt great! I love how we could see Anne's expressions more now! I don't know what else to say as this is just an adaptation and can't go on about my thoughts of the classic, but I'll say I'll listen to the other classic books of Anne of Green Gables, as I, unfortunately, haven't got around them yet (come on people, I'm only a teenager, I got a life ahead of me... hopefully) But I do find Anne's obsessions with her looks a bit weird but understandable understanding the mocking she got from it and the time this is set in, but her name? Hey, I use Ann as a nickname, I don't mind at all...

"Anne of Green Gables" has been one of my favourite books in ages, and fortunately this manga version of it completely did it justice. It was abridged - of course - but Stacy King managed to keep the atmosphere and charm intact, and I greatly enjoyed reading it again.

I love how LMM allows the characters to grow. Mostly Anne, of course, but honestly I think it's even more apparent in Marilla, and it pleases me more with every reread. LMM really has a way with words, and Stacy King included so many of my favourite quotes in this adaption.

And as always - the drawings were gorgeous..

The art in this manga was stunning. I loved every second of the artwork. It was cute and adorable and perfect for the tale of Anne.

Anne herself was a little strange for my taste but she was an interesting protagonist. I really enjoyed reading about the other characters and their struggles too. I thought this book told her story very well; it was a faithful adaptation.

Manga Classics: Anne of Green Gables is the retold story of Anne Shirley and how she comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on Prince Edward Island in the 1870's. Expecting a boy orphan to help Matthew, the pair are surprised when red-headed Anne appears in their lives. Will Anne's charm win over her benefactors and the rest of the small community?

Anne Shirley is introduced to a new audience through this Manga classic. The author does a good job of capturing the likeness of the many characters on the island. I am not sure that the book truly captures the charm of Anne Shirley, especially her nervous utterances and wide-eyed innocense. The story is definitely well portrayed and would be a great way of introducing Anne to a new set of readers.

Disclaimer: I was given the opportunity to receive an Advanced Reader's Copy of Manga Classics: Anne of Green Gables. The decision to read and review this graphic novel was entirely my own.

*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

This was a much quicker read than I expected it to be and it left my head reeling, what with all of Anne’s constant yapping. But that was one of the manga’s many strengths: it’s ability to accurately capture Anne’s true spirit.

This was beautifully illustrated. Anne looked so pretty in every frame she appeared in. And all the details and drawing style very much suited the story.

I’m not sure if this was a good adaptation, after all, I haven’t read the original Anne of Green Gables books. But I have watched the Netflix show Anne with an E and for the most part this manga followed many of the storylines from season 1 and 2. It skimmed through a lot of moments like a sort of overview of Anne’s growth but it was still quite interesting to see. And the moments it did focus on were poignant or fun. There was a noticeable lack of antagonistic moments though.

Anne’s friendship with Diana Barry and her love/hate relationship with Gilbert Blythe were so sweet to see. I wanted more of the latter because I found the manga ended quite abruptly, but I understood there was a lot of ground to cover. Perhaps this manga would benefit from a sequel in the future!

The original story of Anne of Green Gables is without a doubt a classic and the whole series was one of my favorites growing up. I think that the art of manga is a excellent choice to put this book into. The character of Anne especially feels particularly fitted to manga and the energy that it exudes in its books.
This is a slightly abridged version of the book simply due to the difference from written word to manga but it retains the soul and heart of the original. This is a wonderful way to introduce others, especially kids to the wonders and beauty of classic literature in a format that might be a little more fun for them.
The authors that translated and edited Anne of Green Gables for the manga included a little section at the end of book talking about their process and how they decided to focus on certain topics of the original for the manga and even included characters sketches as well which were very interesting.
