I've somehow made it 40 something years on this planet without reading or seeing anything about Anne of Green Gables. My loss, because its a charming story of optimism, imagination, and intelligence. The manga adaptation was nice; had the Manga Classics dramatic and sort of bland house style, but the strength was in the emotional expression and the natural beauty of the settings. A very impressive thing about these adaptations is that they don't seem to cut much at all; this story was more than 300 pages! A good adaptation and it has inspired me to go read the original.

A lovely adaptation of the famous story by L.M. Montgomery about Anne Shirley, an orphan girl with a wild imagination who is adopted by siblings Marilla and Matthew.

I read the original book a little after finishing elementary school and liked it. And I can safely say that I liked this manga as well.

Anne is a very likeable and romantic character, in the innocent, childish way of course, same as the rest of the characters in this.

I know the plot isn't particularly strong, but to me, this story isn't about the plot but about the changes the characters go through and their growth. And as mentioned above, the likeable characters kind of made up for the lack of the plot.

So yeah, I totally recommend this to you!

P.S. In this house we love and support Matthew Cuthbert. A true unproblematic fave 💙 whose death made me cry, even though I knew it was coming .

If you made it this far, congratulations!
'Til next time, take care :) :) :)

I received a free e-book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a manga adaptation of the beloved classic Anne of Green Gables. This was a treat to read, and as someone who's read the original I loved the character design and the care that was clearly taken. The house at Green Gables, Anne's favorite spots around Avonlea, and the school all held the charm Anne sees in them.

Of course, consolidating a print book down to comic form will be hard, and I think the pacing went will in that respect. There was a lot of time taken on the beginning while Anne's years at college were a bit rush— but in the original source material, L. M. Montgomery doesn't take a lot of time with her college career, so this isn't a slight on the adapters at all. There are certain scenes in the middle I would have liked to see more detail with, such as Gilbert Blythe teasing Anne, so his slight against her is more highlighted. Overall, this was a delightful adaptation with a lot of love in it, and it was clearly in good hands.

Anne of Green Gables has always been a book that sort of intimidated me. So many love it, it's a classic, but there's always a chance I won't like it. Not only was this manga well drawn, but I know know reading the full book won't let me down!

I have only read Anne once or twice before and it’s been awhile. To a casual fan, like me, this feels like exactly what I would want the manga version to be.

Any visual story will be slightly different from the longer text only version. This one follows Anne from her first day with the Cuthberts to Anne as a young woman. We see Anne as a smart, inquisitive young child. Trouble seems to follow her as she adjusts to a way of life she’s never known before. She makes friends and at least one enemy. She learns what it means to have a family. What it means to love. And how to stop wishing for more and truly enjoy where you are.

The art is super sweet. I can’t imagine a better way they could have honored the original any better than they did.

Another fun adaptation of a classic story, moved into a format that takes some getting used to but works rather well. The fact that manga tends to be melodramatic and this story has its share of melodrama via the main character's imaginative view of the world, probably helps.

Big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing met with a copy of this book! This did not affect my review.

I have never read a manga before, but I just had to read this when I saw that it was based on the classic Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. I LOVED Anne with an E, but haven't gotten to reading the full novel itself yet due to lack of time (I only read the first half, please don't judge me). This manga seemed like a good temporary compromise and it did not disappoint!

As Anne of Green Gables is a classic, I won't get into the story. What I loved most about this manga, was that you can see a lot of things Anne imagines. A tree reminded Anne of a bride, and you saw an illustration of the tree and the bridge Anne imagines right next to each other. It gives the reader the opportunity to experience and connect to Anne's perception, which I know lots of readers struggle with when reading the novel.

There are however two events that I would have loved to see more of in the manga: Anne's first meeting with Diana and Anne's first school day. The meeting with Diana skipped almost immediately to the part where Anne and Diane sweat to be bosom friends, which made it less natural. I missed the build-up, which could have been done in one page. And I think Anne's first day of Sunday school is important enough to be discussed more clearly in the manga.

However, those are my own preferences. It was a very good adaption, and I'll definitely read more manga based on classics!

An absolutely perfect adaptation of a well-known classic. Besides the fact that I love both the story of Anne of Green Gables and manga, this beautiful cover instantly made me want to read this book! I wasn’t disappointed. The story is very close to the original as well as the Netflix series Anne with an E and the illustrations are just splendid. I also really enjoyed reading the scriptwriter’s insights into the adaptation process. All in all, this was a pleasure to read.

Gosh I’m truly a sucker for anything Anne of green gables related. I haven’t read any mangas before but had to pick this one up because of Anne. This was almost exactly like the Anne with an e show which is my all time fav which made this so enjoyable!! I loved reliving how cute and talkative Anne is and how her relationship with Marilla and Matthew grow. I will have to check out more manga from now on because I enjoyed this immensely. Totally recommend to anyone who’s a fan on Anne of green gables or Anne with an e :)

This was my first manga, so I'm not too well-versed, but I found this story to be so charming! I had never read this novel and I absolutely fell in love with this story!

Oh, Anne, you beautiful soul! ❤️ I loved everything about Anne: she's headstrong, a big romantic at heart, a true friend who'll never leave your side, a big time dreamer, a wonderful companion to the Cuthberts, she gives in to her flights of imagination, she uses big words that even adults have difficulty understanding, But the most important quality I love about Anne is she's not perfect, which makes her more real and likeable!

I couldn't stop smiling while reading the parts where Anne spoke, she's such a feisty little kid who wears her heart on her sleeves! I'm in love with Anne, not just Anne of Nowhere but Anne of Green Gables!

I loved all the characters in this book. Anne's bosom friend and companion Diana, Marilla with her rigid way of showcasing her love for Anne, Matthew who believed he was allowed to spoil Anne for all she wanted in the world because he loved her so, and Anne's nemesis Gilbert!

I loved her journey and above all her growth throughout the book! It felt as if I was there to experience it all in Green Gables 🌼

I didn't want this book to end! Anne, I'll be in the depths of despair now that I won't read about you!

'Manga Classics: Anne of Green Gables' by L.M. Montgomery with adaptation by Crystal Chan and art by Kuma Chan is a manga adapation of a classic novel.

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert have a farm on Prince Edward Island. They send away to adopt a young boy to help out on the farm. What they get instead is a young vivacious redheaded girl named Anne Shirley. The story follows Anne as she grows up, from a young, fanciful girl with a runaway imagination to a young woman ready to take on the world.

This manga is authorized by the Heirs of L.M. Montgomery and includes a foreword by Katie McDonald Butler, a granddaughter of the the author. That tells you more than I can about the quality of the adaptation.

And it is quality. I love Manga Classics and the adaptations they do. This one is beloved and they treat it with the utmost care. The art is especially nice. Another great job by the team at Manga Classics!

I received a review copy of this manga from Manga Classics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

This is such a fun version! It's fun seeing the character's thoughts in a thought bubble. The illustration of Avonlea and Green Gables ( the white way of delight) was so nice! Also, Can I say that Anne fits so perfectly as an anime character? Her out of this world imaginations and expressions are befitting as an anime. I really enjoyed reading through this manga version of " Anne of Green Gables"!!! Thank you so much! I have the the puffin in bloom version and a classic version. Now, I am going to search the shelves of bookstores for the manga version! YAY!

Anne of Green Gables is my mother's favorite book and I wanted to experience my mother's favorite work in a more contemporary way. I am very happy with this read.

When I first heard about it I knew I wanted to read this and since hearing about it I was thrilled it was offered here on NetGalley. Since reading and about to review this I have purchased the book for my collection and have read it several times already.

The artwork is absolutely beautiful even though it's in black and white. I can only imagine would it would look like in colour throughout the book.

As a lover of AOGG I always worry if books will do it justice and this one does.

I definitely have plans to check out other books from this publisher.

Anne of Green Gables - Classic Manga
It’s based on the Anne of Green Gables novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I love these Manga Classics ; they bring the stories into modern (to me) reading format that feels familiar/welcoming to kids. They also keep to the story so you don’t lose out on the classic!!!

This is my mom’s favorite book so when I saw they had this on their Netgalley wanted to look at it. I plan on getting this one and the novel for her for her birthday. They have so many decorative novels and sets for this series. I never realized until I was looking up the price of this manga classic.

This is 100% recommended for kids and adults who enjoy reading or read better with illustrations / visual aid.

This is a lovely manga adaptation of the classic children's title, Anne of Green Gables. This novel is so well done, and gives readers both new to Anne and longtime fans the ability to meet her in a totally new and interesting way!

I have loved Anne of Green Gables since I was a child. Some of my earliest memories are of watching the 1985 miniseries starring Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst, although I only got around to reading the book last year.
There's just something so heartwarming about Anne's story. She's this imaginative child who feels everything so deeply. She's also curious and intelligent and loyal. The story is very much about the relationships she forms throughout her years at Green Gables - with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, Diana Barry, Rachel Lynde and Gilbert Blythe. It's not a sweeping action adventure, but rather a coming of age novel filled with the adventures of growing up and every day life.
Since this is an adaptation, from here on I'm going to focus primarily on those elements.
Firstly, I thought the artwork was lovely. I will admit I wasn't the biggest fan of Marilla's character design, but that was only because I always imagine Marilla looking like Colleen Dewhurst. So that's more of a personal preference rather than a criticism.
I thought the manga adaptation was fantastic. All the elements of the original story that I loved were present, particularly the focus on Anne's relationships with Marilla, Matthew, and Diana. I would have liked her friendships with Rachel Lynde and Aunt Josephine expanded more, but I understand that there are constraints when doing an adaptation.
For the most part, the pacing flowed well, although I found some of the vignette-style events that happen were a bit jarring, like the poetry recitation. Again, this is part of the difficulty of adapting the novel to a manga. What filled a chapter in the novel, really only requires a page or two in the manga. Since the time jumps are more pronounced between a couple pages, rather than the 20-30 pages in a chapter, I can see why this happened.
On the whole, I thought this was a delightful manga adaptation of one of my favourite stories. I would highly recommend this to any Anne Shirley fans, young readers, and people who enjoy graphic novels/manga.
