I am a diehard fan of Anne, so naturally I had to give this new Manga version a try - and I loved it! It stayed very true to the original book, and very true to Anne’s personality and spirit, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Manga style illustrations. Simply, delightful. My only complaint was that they had to cut so much - I dearly missed Miss Stacey and Mrs. Allen especially who only got mere passing mentions - but, I appreciated the added context from the adapter at the end where she explained why she chose to focus on the aspects she did while cutting others. I thoroughly approve of this edition, as I approve of any new format that introduces Anne to a new audience who may have not discovered her otherwise <3

I am a fan of literature classics. I am a fan of manga. And I was hoping to find something sweet and relaxing to lose my self into, and this fit the bill.
Anne of Green Gables translates so well to the manga format. This adaptation tries very hard to be true to the book, and is a far more faithful adaptation than "Anne with an E". But I also felt the manga format allowed some aspects of the original to come forward. In the book, Anne's perspective dominates - the story is told mostly from her point of views, and her monologues take over the majority of the page count. When the story is told graphically, Marilla gets given a larger role; we get to see her thoughts on equal footing with Anne's, as even if there is far more text on Anne's speech bubbles, Marilla's presence is there. The manga also benefits from being able to show locations; instead of lengthy descriptions of the lake of shining waters, we just get to see it (as a side note, I can see how some adaptations would benefit from this, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame will be a lot more accessible without an entire chapter describing the cathedral's façade). Humorous incidents, like that of the raspberry cordial, also benefit from the graphical depiction of facial expressions. It is also a delight to see Gilbert during the entire rivalry with Anne.
I am looking forward to more manga adaptations of literary classics. Got my eye on adaptations of Jane Austen's work, as well as Les Miserables and The Count of Montecristo. The volume with compilation of Edgar Allan Poe's stories also sounds quite interesting, as the aesthetics to fit his stories should be significantly darker. Other works I would love to see adapted and made more accessible for younger readers: War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, Don Quixote, Hamlet (looks like that one is on the way!), Life is a Dream, Madame Bovary and a collection of stories by Horacio Quiroga to go along with Poe's. I would also love to see the books released as ebooks (although I'm tempted enough by the hard copies with their gorgeous art).
I'll preface this by saying I've never read Anne of Green Gables, and I've never seen any film adaptations. With that being said, I was familiar with the premise of the story prior to reading the manga and I am now even more interested in reading the original book after having finished the manga. I could tell just from the manga that Anne's story is a story that makes you feel nostalgic, even if you didn't grow up with it. The art style is adorable, and I truly think that if you're unsure about reading Anne of Green Gables that this is a perfect starting point. Although I can't say how well this manga follows the plot of the book, and I know that this is a shortened version of Anne's story, but I feel safe in saying that I think you should give this one a chance whether you're a lover of manga, Anne of Green Gables, or just somebody who saw this book and their interest was piqued! This was such an enjoyable read and the artwork really just added to the reading experience.
Thank you so much to Manga Classics Inc. and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Manga Classics for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions stated are entirely my own. I thought this manga adaption of Anne of Green Gables was pretty good. I appreciated how the story itself stayed true to the original. As someone who has never read manga, I had a bit of a hard time reading it. However, that is my own fault. I thought the art was okay, but it wasn't my favorite. Again, this may be my own fault and opinion since this is the first manga I have read. All in all, I think those who love manga and/or Anne of Green Gables will love this adaption.
If you love manga and Anne of Green Gables, this little book will be as much a delight for you as it was for me. Moreover, if you only love one of them, this may be the perfect time to fall in love with the other. The manga really does my favorite children story to life, all the illustrations are simply adorabile, and I found once again a kindred spirit in Anne Shirley.
This is a great adaptation that stayed true to the original. The artwork is really cute and I really enjoyed rereading this story.
Listen. I know there is a book out there, I know of at least two shows that are out there. But I have never seen or read anything about Anne of Green Gables. So this was my introduction.
I wasn't that into it at the beginning. Anne is one of those people that I just hate in real life, cause this girl keeps on talking and talking. But she really grew on me. I truly love her story. I love the different relationships she had.
When I finished the Manga, I needed more. I really, really, REALLY need to read the books, or watch the show. I just need more Anne in my life.
Also the artwork was once again super stunning. I just love these Manga Classics.

Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite series of all times so I will take in any format - the original books, the 80's movies, the netflix series and, apparently, the manga adaptation as well.
I had never read a manga before but I will definitely repeat the experience. The drawings were beautiful and captivated Anne's essence perfectly, as did the dialogue.
Anne of Green Gables is a timeless classic. This manga version tells the tale of Anne, with an e, Shirley and all the fun and trouble she gets into when she is sent to Green Gables to live with Mathew and Marilla Cuthburt.
Anne is an orphan girl, but the Cuthburt’s thought they were getting a boy to help with the farm work. They decide to keep and raise Anne. Anne has bright red hair which gets her into trouble at times. She also has a big imagination and just as big of a temper.
The authors do a great job of converting this classic tale into the manga format. Great for kids who have trouble with regular books. Highly recommend for any fans of Anne of Green Gables.
Thank you to NetGalley and Manga classics for this arc.

This manga was a lot of fun. I think the Manga Classics is a really great way to get people involved in classic novels who otherwise wouldn't be interested in reading them. I'm a big fan of Anne of Green Gables and the story is very close to my heart so this truly was a fun read. I found it a lot slower than other manga but I suppose that's to be expected in an adaptation like this, but is something to keep in mind if you're reading it. It really was a cute way to read the story and the art was beautiful. if you are curious about the story but not interested in reading the original novel (although I encourage everyone to read it)!
This was adorable. Very similar to the actual show, at least for the first bit. It does diverge a little after that, but I honestly wasn’t expecting to almost cry at the end there. Also enemies to friends is just perfection 🙌🏼
I was curious about Manga Classics, so I picked up one that I’ve read in prose format and one that I haven’t. This is the one where I’d read the original before, although probably 20 years ago. I think it’s a great adaptation — it’s amazing how they can use much of what I assume/think is the original text, but just cutting it up into digestible pieces and adding the images makes it so much more accessible. My only complaint is that some of the shorter chapters (or ones that they’ve made short for this adaptation) are just a page, and it feels a bit jarring when it goes off in another direction immediately afterwards; I can see some kids/teens used to intense action finding the slice of life style a bit dull.
All that said, this is delightful, especially the early parts. Anne is a perfect candidate for being manga-fied — her wholesome melodrama translates really well. She’s always throwing herself down on a table and sobbing or shouting about how beautiful something is. Some of the things that as a kid I admired about Anne (yelling “I hate you!” at a friend of the family who says she’s ugly) seem like a bit much now, but overall she’s very endearing. Also, Anne + Diana 4ever.

Anne Shirley, a precocious orphan girl, was sent to the Cuthberts’ home of Green Gables by accident. the Cuthberts, siblings Marilla and Matthew were hoping to adopt a boy to help around the farm, but they got Anne instead, a girl full of imagination and spunk. After hearing of the life she could have if adopted by another family, Marilla decides to let Anne stay. Anne starts at school and befriends a neighbor girl named Diana, and even has her own enemy in Gilbert Blythe. Anne tries exceptionally hard to make Marilla happy, despite her lack of proper upbringing. She also grows close to Matthew, who likes her imaginative stories very much.
This seems very much like a faithful adaptation, but I cannot say for certain, having never read the original storyline. Admittedly, the story was not as intriguing to me as other titles I've read this year, but this story continues to resonate with audiences well after its original publication. The Manga Classics line is a great way to introduce or bridge manga readers into prose novels, or, at the very least, provide exposure to classic storylines in a familiar format.
Kuma Chan's illustrations employ all the familiar tenets of the manga genre, and in doing so, create a fairly beautiful, often cute version of Anne. She often professes to be quite plain, and she absolutely hates her red hair, but her illustrated version is adorable, so it's hard to take her complaints seriously.

This was such a cute adaption! The art style was lovely and the plot didn’t differ much from the original.
A great way to enjoy a classic!
This I just as lovely as teh rest of the Manga Classics. I really like how these editions break down the story so it is easy to understand.
The author and artists did a great job. I didn't get into the story, but that isn't their fault: I was just bored with the premise.
A great way to enjoy a classic! I loved reading this with my niece and it's a great way to keep their attention while telling the story in a beautiful way.
I tried to read the original Anne of Green Gables twice and it did not get me in the way I was expecting to. It is, in fact, a lovely, deeply emotional, and timeless tale that keeps enchanting people all around the world hundreds of years later of its first publication. So, needless to say, how disappointed I was when I could not hop aboard this train and love Anne Shirley's stories as much as everyone else.
When I saw this cute-looking manga version of the story, I knew I had to try it. If it was enough to win me over then, for sure, it was good. So it did. It blew me away and I am in love with this artistic version of Anne of Green Gables.
The art style is beyond expectations. Sharp and yet very cute traces, perfect when portraiting Anne, Diana, Marilla, and others. The level of detail is amazing and it's the perfect touch for such a classic children's book.
As for the literary content, it was adapted almost word by word. Plotlines were maintained and dialogs were almost all the same as the original piece.
I would recommend it to everyone. First-time readers of Anne, first-time readers of manga (as there is a guide on the first page explaining how to read it), long-time lovers of this story, parents and their children, art teachers and their students. It's a hit and you should not miss it.

I read this manga in one sitting. It's so good that I couldn't put my phone down. And as soon as I finished reading it, I googled Manga Classics!
P.S.--I really enjoyed reading the endnotes about the aditing choices.
E-galley was provided by NetGalley for an honest review. Thank you so much!
Quite a beautiful Manga adaptation.
I loved the narration and artistic style. The book has done justice L.M.Montgomery's Original issue.
The artwork is beautiful and detailed.
I love Anne of Green Gables! Even though I haven’t actually read the original novel. But i love the movie! And now I love this manga classic edition! I love that these editions give you the classic in a shortened version, but give it life and vividness with pictures alongside the dialogue and occasional narrative.
This edition of Anne was beautiful and sweet. I loved the interpretations the artist did of the characters, and I just love the anime/manga style.
Now I just need to get the physical edition so I can appreciate the art even more, since viewing it on a small screen does not do the art justice.
