This focuses far more on the addiction aspect than I realized going in. It's geared very much towards the 12 steps and conventional AA, though Cryer makes it workable for any addiction. There's quite a lot of her memoir in here too. I expected a lot more practical yoga but it's a great, introspective meld for those who are in recovery and want to incorporate yoga.
I read a review copy via Net Galley.
Straightforward, honest, and digestible ways to incorporate yoga and the 12 step program into recovery. I enjoyed it!
I found this book really helpful as part of my eating disorder recovery. I started doing yoga years ago to help keep me strong and help quiet my mind, but never thought of it as a tool to help me let go of my addiction. The advice in this book applies to addictions of all types: of course drugs and alcohol, but also addiction to control or perfectionism. Cryer tackles a tough topic in a thoughtful way. The book is organized into short sections so you can read and digest each piece of information at a time. My favorite parts are the yoga flows/poses introduced at the end of each of the 12 Step section. I would recommend this book.
A great book to help with addiction. There are so many tools to help and yoga can be one of them. I enjoyed that the author shared parts of her story as well as provided lots of useful tips for the reader. Thank you to NetGalley and New Harbinger for an ARC.
Most people with substance abuse/addiction issues are also dealing with some form of trauma. That’s why getting it all out on the yoga mat is a great way to practice recovery. Yoga teacher Katy Cryer shares her story and helps readers navigate how to deal with stress, manage cravings and stay present.
Yoga is a powerful tool in a recovery toolbox, so this is a recommended read if you’re looking for a way to get centered at home, on the mat, without having to go to a church basement to do so! Interestingly, yoga and 12-step programs encourage people to go inward, find self-awareness and connect with a higher power/spirit. These are all things that are at the heart of recovery.
Special thanks to New Harbinger Publications, via NetGalley, for an electronic copy of the book in exchange for my review.
I am not an addict, but I am training to be a yoga teacher and this information is so helpful. To a lot of us, addiction seems like something we should be able to work harder at to overcome. We don’t truly understand addiction. Hearing stories of what addiction feels like and how the mind plays tricks on us and tells us we need these things, isn’t something that we all can comprehend. Reading books like this and learning how to help others and empathize with what they are going through is so important. I’m so thankful that this author shared her journey and that I was able to read it and understand just a bit of what she went through. This knowledge that I gained will help me to aid in helping people from all different walks of life as I deepen my yoga teacher journey. Keeping space open for others is so important and this story definitely helped me in seeing that there are different ways to approach a practice and different people need different things. It helped me to understand the mind of an addict just a little bit more.
I really liked the way that this book was written, it was just honest, no judging or beating herself up over her addiction. It was nice to read the back story to her addiction as well as moving forward on how to get past it. Some helpful tips and techniques in this book.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
As a former addictions therapist, I was intrigued by the idea of using yoga AND the 12 Steps for recovery.
Yoga teacher Katy Cryer offers a gentle practice that supports the 12 Step approach, allowing you to feel at ease in your own body while coping with painful emotions, overwhelm, and cravings.
“With yoga and the 12 steps,” says the author, “we get body care and awareness, personal development, spiritual connection, and a community of like-minded souls to join us on the path.”
A wise guide, highly recommended for anyone seeking a more peaceful life.
