Graphic novels are a hit with all sorts of readers and this one is for that fan of the format who loves to laugh and likes a bit of the school/friendship drama but maybe not as much as what is found in Telgemeier’s works or Chmakova’s Berryhill School. Katie is left behind when best friend Bethany heads off to a summer long camp that is way out of her mom’s budget. Intrepid Katie decides to advertise and pick odd jobs to pay for at least one week of camp but doesn’t really have much success until upstairs neighbor Ms. Lang hires her to cat sit for $30/hr. That seems like a lot…until poor Katie discovers that there are 217 cats and all seem to have some non-feline special skill that will start the laughter among readers and they probably won’t stop at least chuckling until the very last page is turned. Mixed into this absurdity is the presence of some super heroes in the big city who are not managing to stop a cat burglar who strikes in the dead of night. Guess who the prime suspect is? Yup, CAT-lover Ms Lang. And Katie is determined to prove it. Along the way, she has some worries about her best friend’s lack of letter-writing and the possibility that she is losing a friendship unless she can get to camp. The illustrations are fabulous and seem to have all 200+ cats represented with a different look for each one. Great series opener and perfect for graphic novel collections for those in grades 3-5. Text is free of profanity, sexual content and violence. There is a reference to some animal abuse that may hurt the heart of some, but it is not graphic or gory.
Thank you author and NetGalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
This is such a fun, new graphic novel. My students are obsessed with this series!
Super heroes and villains are exciting. Specially trained cat assistants are overwhelmingly adorable! I love the art and all the unique heroes and villains. (Owl Guy is the worst!) The heroes/ villains plot is well blended with the more down to earth issues of growing up and changing friendships.
My daughter and I absolutely loved this book and these up to no good cats that all have crazy personalities. We plan on buying the book eventually.
This is probably one of my new all time favorite graphics! I loved the plot and the characters. Looking forward to the sequel!
If Katie wants to join her best friends at Camp Bear Lake before the summer slips away, she needs to get some cash in her Summer Fun Fund ASAP! Luckily another tenant in her building, the mysterious Ms. Lang, needs a catsitter … for her 217 cats. The job pays well, but the mischievous cats (displaying a highly unusual set of skills) are running circles around Katie. And Ms. Lang is always out and about when the Mousetress – New York City’s newest villain – strikes. What is she really up to while Katie is catsitting? This is a great hook, though I preferred the friendship plotline to the superhero goings-on. Overall the bright artwork, adorable kitty cats, and variety of hijinks make this a fun read for middle graders on up.
Really cute book! I didn't read the description before I read it so I wasn't aware of the superhero aspect of this graphic novel but it was so fun! I loved all the characters but mostly I loved all the cats. Highly recommend if you're looking for a fun fast read.
I don't usually get into superhero stories, but this is a fun twist to the story that both superhero enthusiast and newbies will enjoy.
THIS IS A PURRRFECT GRAPHIC NOVEL. love this so much. Katie is amazing, it’s the perfect amount of action and heart.
Oh this is such a fun graphic novel with excellent illustrations. What do you get when you combine a teenage girl, an apartment full of super intelligent cats, and a possible super villain as their owner? Hijinks and fun to the max. I love that each cat has a specialty. So much fun this is a must read especially if you are a cat lover!
Katie the Catsitter is the perfect graphic novel fir anyone who likes cats, mysteries and superheroes! Those sneaky misunderstood cats are the perfect characters for this book!
Katie the Catsitter is a delightful graphic novel mash-up for young crazy cat ladies and superhero fans! Middle grade readers will enjoy the fun storyline while also touching on the relatable topic of changing interests and friendships. I'm sad that the book indicated we will have to wait until 2022 for more Katie the Catsitter adventures!
This a wonderful story of friendship, paradigm shifts, and cats.... lots of them. There are moments that are silly and make the read chuckle out loud, but then there is serious moments of involving changes in relationships. These relationship changes involved mother/ daughter, friends, and neighbors. The illustrations were on point and matched the panels appropriately. I also enjoyed a connection between the cover art and a story line from the middle of the book. This book is great for busy grownups that want a way a book to connect with the middle grade reader in their life.
Katie the Catsitter is a delightful superhero graphic novel about who is a villain and who is a hero. With so, so many cats. Venable's work is always fun, but this might be my favorite yet. Stephanie Yue's art is perfect for this story. Many libraries will get this from Junior Library Guild, but those that don't use that service will absolutely want to purchase this for their collections!
Unfortunately, I was never able to actually download the ARC from NetGalley, but was able to read a physical copy upon publication. Overall, I really enjoyed this story! I love cats, and the names of the cats in this story are so cute and clever! I also really appreciated Katie as a character, and I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the story. I thought her friendship dilemma was very relatable for younger readers. I realize that I am not the target audience for this story, but it made me smile and enjoy it nonetheless!
My 9 year old daughter absolutely loves graphic novels. After reading this one, I purchased a copy for her birthday later this month.
A wonderful look at childhood anxiety, friendships & swingin superhero cats! Wonderful artwork showcases the antics of the cats & the stressful ramifications of those actions on their humans
I was a little startled to discover superheroes in this story. Once I adjusted, though, it was a pretty cool read. A world with supers makes it easier to accept superintelligent cats. And Venable takes it beyond just a standard hero plot. We're really exploring what it means and looks like to be a hero. More than just perception, we're looking at intent. Heroes who are self-serving or disappointing. Villains who are well-meaning but push the boundaries of acceptable behavior. Interesting ideas worth exploring.
Hooked from the author's note that affirmed that all cats are a little evil. I don't have 217 but I definitely have more than my fair share as well as a feral I have been working with for two years. I think we're just four years away from being close buddies. This is a delightful book for cat lovers or fans of superhero stories. Aside from the big plot lines, I'm also a fan of the quieter subtext about losing your friends but finding there are more out there as you change and grow.
Hand Katie the Catsitter to any graphic novel fan. This will be an instant hit, and will be flying off the library shelf.
