The cover and the title of this book is what totally caught my attention. Graphic novel, cats, and superheroes, awesome! I have to admit that you had me at cats. I think this middle grade book is perfect for those girls that are right at that tween/teen age, trying to find their way with changing friendships and figuring out their place in the world. It’s summer and Katie’s best friends are going to a sleep away camp, unfortunately Katie cannot afford to go. So she tries out various jobs (unsuccessfully), to raise money to meet her friends at camp. After giving up, her mysterious neighbor, Ms. Lang, offers an interesting opportunity. Katie finds out that the Ms. Lang works nights, like her mother, and needs help cat sitting her 217 cats. YES, 217 CATS! And they are not ordinary cats, they can use a computer (to order pizza), work a tv remote to watch movies, and even sew! Hilarious! Katie becomes suspicious of Ms. Lang’s line of work, and thinks she might be the Supervillain the Mousetress. The storyline is super cute and also subtly weaves in some life lessons. The illustrations are amazing and would definitely keep any young middle grader intrigued. I can see my 13yo, who is not quite ready for the yucky romance novels, who thinks boys are gross, and loves to watch Marvel movies with her bff, totally loving this book. I have provided this honest review in exchange for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and Random House Kids.
Okay, I'm obsessed with this graphic novel! I'm so glad that it's going to be a series. As soon as I finished reading it, I bought it for all of my younger cousins. Who doesn't love cats, superheroes, saving animals, annnnnnd more cats?
I loved Katie the Catsitter! Such a great middle-grade graphic novel.
Things I loved: Katie: she is a well-developed, complex and very likable character. The cats! They were such fun side characters with great personalities of their own. The artwork is fantastic. The story is complex, with many layers and themes of friendship. family, persistence, animal cruelty.
This is a really great graphic novel that I will definitely be buying for our school library.
City girl Katie yearns to attend summer camp in the woods with her best friends but the fees are too steep for her single mom. Taking matters into her own hands, Katie advertises her services doing odd jobs for people in her building. Her first attempts don't go well, but then a neighbor Madeline Lang observes Katie's way with cats and offers her a job cat sitting. At $30 dollars an hour, Katie can make money fast but to her surprise, Ms. Lang has a whooping 217 cats and they are certainly not typical. Each cat has its own special talent from computer hacking to lock picking. And while they wreck the apartment while Katie is there, the cats band together returning it to pristine condition right before Ms. Lang arrives home much to Katie's great relief.
In Katie's New York, superheroes and supervillains are real but deciding who is who is not always black and white. Eastern Screech is said to be the highest rated superhero but it seems Mousetress who is deemed the most notorious villain is doing more good exposing businesses for their unethical treatment of animals. Clues lead Katie to believe Ms. Lang may be Mousetress and when Ms. Lang does not come home one night, Katie's hunch is confirmed. She and the cats (all 219 of them) must save Ms. Lang/Mousetress from the true villain.
Humorous and heartfelt, I really enjoyed Katie the Catsitter. Not only is the plot so unique but also I loved witnessing Katie grow as a person coming to terms with a changing friendship and gaining confidence to branch out on her own. Venable's peppy dialogue coupled with Yue's expressive and energetic illustrations kept the story fresh and fun. Can't wait to share with students and already in anticipation for Book 2: Best Friends for Never. Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for the eARC. Katie the Catsitter celebrates its book birthday tomorrow on January 5, 2021.
Super fun read! Engaging from the very beginning. "Katie the Catsitter" combines humor and fantasy in a coming of age graphic novel that will appeal to readers of all ages.
The art is adorable, and I really think my students will enjoy this one. I will be buying for my middle school library.
This was so fun! I love that each cat had such a strong personality and a specialty.
I’m thrilled there will be more books and that this will be a series.
Living in New York City, 12-year-old, Katie, longs to attend summer camp with her friends, but her single mom cannot afford it. Worried her summer will be boring without her friends, Katie takes a job sitting cats for $30 per hour in hopes of earning her own way. But Ms. Lang’s 217 cats are just plain evil. They tear the place apart every night, order pizzas, steal furniture, hack computers, pick locks, and much, much more. Meanwhile, a supervillain known as Mousetress is terrorizing the city. Their only hope is a self-absorbed superhero called Eastern Screech. The longer Katie works for Ms. Lang and her cats, the more she begins to suspect that Ms. Lang is really Mousetress. Could Katie be right? Will she find a way to stop Moustress? Will she earn enough money to go to summer camp with her friends? This graphic novel is hilarious and engaging with a fun plot. The characters are unique, well developed, and draw the readers in. The illustrations do a great job of bringing the story to life and work well with the text. The main character’s expressions really draw the reader into the story and bring her emotions to life. Fans of humor, superheroes, and a bit of mystery will enjoy reading this book.
Charming. That’s the best word I have for this book. I just instantly fell in love with the world, the characters, and obviously the kitties! Colleen proves once again to just be an incredible storyteller in the graphic novel medium.
Cats. Need I say more?
Katie is trying to earn money so she can attend summer camp with her friends. After a few odd jobs don't work out as planned, Katie is offered a job to catsit for her neighbor. Did I mention her neighbor has 217 cats? And might be a Supervillian? Superhero???
THIS WAS SO CUTE! The cat lover in mean could hardly handle it. So many cats, so many personalities. I loved it all: badass female characters, cats, more CATS.
Cute storyline for cat and superhero lovers everywhere! 🐱 Thanks again to NetGalley and Random House Books for Young Readers for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for feedback.
This story is about a young girl, Katie, who is trying to save up money to go to camp with her friends. She looks for odd jobs around her, she ends up cat sitting for a neighbor. There are superheroes and supervillains in this world, which makes it a cool storyline in the book. The cats that Katie ends up watching are hilarious and mischievous, each with their own special set of skills (there’s 217 of them that Katie has to keep track of). What Katie doesn’t know is what the owner of the cats does while Katie is there watching the cats...is there something evil going on or is Katie just imagining things? The owner can’t be city’s notorious villain! This story kept me wanting to know more and I’m so happy to see there will be a sequel!
This book is pure perfection and is everything I look for in a graphic novel. The art is super cute and the style is easy to follow. The story is witty and funny. I love the characters! What more could you want in a book!? There is a female superhero, saving animals, lots of cats, and making new friends! I also love that it brings up how friendships change.
Katie wants to go to summer camp with her friends.
Katie doesn't have the money to go to summer camp with her friends.
Katie has to earn money to go to summer camp with her friends.
Sounds like a typical middle grade story. Yawn? Nope, not at all.
Because Katie become a cat sitter for a neighbor who owns 217 cats. She had taught her cats to use the human toilet. She has taught her cats to use the computers. She had taught her cats to sew. She had taught her cats to do all manner of things.
Oh, and Katie's neighbor goes out and night, and does something.
Meanwhile, there is a super villain on the loose that is causing the Screech Owl, the local super hero, all manner of problems?
And yes, Katie has ignored the super hero and his antics for the most part, but something is oddly familiar about the super villain.
This is a delightful take on what otherwise might just a story about friendship and growing apart when kids go to away to camp. I love how in this version of reality that it is perfectly normal to have super heroes, who are concerned about their yelp raitings.
And this is apparently the first in a series.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This is such a fun graphic novel. Katie takes a job catsitting only to discover that it's not a few cats, but 217. And these cats are anything but typical felines. Not only is Katie trying to manage this job, but she begins to suspect the neighbor she is working for is a super villain. Cat lovers, especially, will love this read!
To be honest, I was not sure what to expect from this book. I was cautiously optimistic it would be interesting and 2nd-4th grade appropriate. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was so fun and packed with strong female characters. The theme of animal protection is great for Elementary students.
I struggle with Graphic Novels in our school library. So often, the subject matter is too advanced for the language used and I end up with a Graphic Novel too advanced for Elementary and too boring for Middle School. This book is the solution to this problem. The subject matter and language line up perfectly. The graphics are very Elementary School appropriate. I will be happy to add this book to our library and will recommend it to my 2nd-5th Graders. I can also see Middle School students who are passionate about Graphic Novels enjoying this book.
I love the Main characters are all Female. They all feel extremely organic and not contrived. There are flaws in the main character (Katie). Like any great mentor, Madeline sees through these flaws and guides Katie to become a better version of herself. In my opinion, that is the value in this book. At the same time, this theme is not forced on the reader. It is laid out in a way that washes over the reader and carries through the story. This relationship also sets up the plot of a sequel nicely.
I will purchase this book for our school library.
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy. The opinions expressed in this review are all mine. #netgalley #katiethecatsitter
Katie needs a job to go to summer camp. After she tries a few jobs, she gets a sweet gig cat sitting. Only it's for 217 cats. Also, they and their owner could be a supervillain? Love, love, love!!! All the stars to the graphic novel, and not just because I have a cat on my lap right now. :)
What a fun start to what I hope to be a series about superheroes and super villains! Katie is desperate to attend summer camp with her friends but doesn't have the funds. She is determined to earn money for a week at camp by cat-sitting for a neighbor in her apartment building. Katie realizes these are no ordinary cats, and her neighbor is no ordinary person. Katie is determined to figure out who her neighbor really is, make money to attend camp, and cope with her friend's changing personality. This is a fun read for fans of character and friendship-driven graphic novels with some superheroes sprinkled in. Love the art as well.
Katie the Catsitter is perfect for fans who like cats and superheroes. In this graphic novel, Katie tries to save money to go to camp with her friends. The only job that she seems to be good at it watching her neighbor's cats - the hundred or so cats who seem to have special abilities. There is also something not quite right with the neighbor who owns these cats, so Katie tries to solve the mystery. This story was action packed and fun. Readers are sure to enjoy what appears to be the start of a great series. I can't wait to read more.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Katie is the only child of a single mom and spends a lot of time entertaining herself. When school ends and her best friends go off to summer camp, Katie just wants to join them too. Unfortunately she doesn't have any money, and neither does her mom. She tries to get herself hired out to people in her apartment building, but soon realizes that she's not as qualified as she thinks. Until Ms. Lang hires her nightly to watch her cats. All her cats. All 217 of them. Which shouldn't be a problem right? Until Katie realizes that these cats have some very special talents, and so does their owner. In a world where there are superheroes and villains, Katie has to determine who's on which side and whose side it right, all while taking care of 217 cats and saving money for camp. With bright, colorful pictures, and lots of entertainment, this is a great graphic novel for any middle schooler.
Katie wants to go to camp with her best friends this summer, but her mom can't afford to send her. So, Katie decides to earn the money to pay for camp, by any means necessary. She tries several ways to earn money, all of which fail until Ms. Lang hires Katie to be her catsitter, for 217 cats! And these aren't just any cats, they each have their own set of special skills such as knitting, kickboxing, and computer hacking. These cats are downright evil! Slowly, Katie begins to learn how to take care of the cats and curb some of their more evil habits, such as couch stealing and ordering jet engines from the internet. She also begins to suspect that Ms. Lang is the supervillain the Mousetress. Eventually, it is revealed that this is true when she is captured and Katie and the cats have to rescue her. The Mousetress turns out not to be so evil after all. She just wants to help animals. Katie ends up putting her catsitting money towards a vet school fund, not going to camp, making new friends, and becoming Mousetress's sidekick. I can't wait for the next book!
