This is an amazing introduction to politics around the world, and shows how counties may govern differently but still deal with the 5 themes introduced in the beginning of the book: state, citizenship, ideas, economics, media.

This should be in every social studies classroom. It is an especially good resource for immigrant children or those in international families looking to connect the relationships of politics in 2 or more global areas.

“The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote a book, Politics, in the fourth century BC, analyzing the different ways of governing (being in charge) and the questions that arise from these. Not much has changed since. Today we use the word politics to refer to the people and processes involved in making decisions about how we live our lives, and how people try to achieve that power, such as running for election, making political friends (and enemies) who will help them on their path to power, and coming up with ideas for what they would do if they actually ever achieve this.”

There you go. “Politics”, summed up in 100 words. “Politics” is one of the 100 words which are defined, and I have to say, the author has done a very good job of it. I might have chosen other examples to describe or define words, or I might have chosen different words. But I didn’t write a book, did I? And this is an excellent introduction for anyone, not just kids, to what some words mean and how governments work.

I’ll add some illustrations below, to show how the book is presented. I will add only a handful of words, not the whole 100 for each.
My Goodreads review shows these pages:
Budget (the cake) ------and ----------Debt (buildings and bills)

“So a budget is the government’s way of telling you how much money they have and what they are going to spend it on.”
. . .
“Debt, in national terms, is when a country owes money that the government has borrowed.”

And now for my personal favourite. Have a good look at this picture.

”SPIN
There is really nothing bad about spin—it just means that political messages have been made easy for the public to understand. If you believe this, then you have just fallen for some spin about spin! In reality, spin means presenting a version of the facts to give a particular view of events instead of the whole truth. Spin, for example, might tell you that a particular policy is good for people, without mentioning all of the bad parts. The experts who help to create spin, which is a form of public relations, are often referred to as spin doctors.”

Did you notice the part of the picture that has the spotlight on it?

It’s really a terrific resource, and while it’s designed for kids, it’s the kind of thing that I bet will teach you something, too. At the end, after the last words, is a brief explanation of a few voting systems, which I found fascinating.

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing words&pictures for the preview copy from which I have unashamedly shared some illustrations.

This book really interesting and informative. I have learned a lot about politics because it is usually not my thing. If you need or want to know more, I do recommend this book.

Learn Political Terms, Quick & Easy

This is a great book to introduce political terms to middle graders. They explain each term in just 100 words or so with a colorful picture to go along with it that illustrates the concept. Some two-page spreads are related, like poverty and wealth or left and right. For a book on politics, this is relatively unbiased, which is always good in a political book aimed at children. The book isn't really geared to any particular country, as some words explored aren't typically used in, say, US politics. This would be a perfect book for homeschooling, a middle-grade library, or just for a child who is interested in politics.

A very good, bright and illustrated introduction to politics! To children or even for someone that isn't much knowledgeable in it!
As I'm a foreigner and I don't know much about the politics in the US, and sometimes I don't know the exact word that would translate what I know in portuguese to what it is in english the book is quite good!

I was itching to get my hands on this book for my classroom library. I'm a political science major and always looking for unique ways to introduce my students to international politics. World Politics in 100 Worlds is perfect for younger students because it's quick and entertaining! It's an easy way to give them a quick taste and spark further interest. I really wish a book like this existed when I was a kid. Growing up, we learned very little about politics outside of Canada. I'd highly recommend picking this up for your classroom or home collection!

The chosen words, paragraph descriptions, and illustrations are all fantastic and clearly done with care so as not to be unnecessarily bias. I also appreciated how related words were put next to each other. I did not appreciate how the format of the book, in general, shows each word in isolation instead of parts of interconnected concepts. With this in mind, I believe this book could be a great tool for an educator but certainly cannot stand on its own.

An excellent introductory reference about politics ideal for children in upper elementary school and beyond. Covered is a broad range of topics, some including: government types, ideologies, and economics. Each term is defined in a brief and straightforward manner. Overall, a very informative introduction to politics.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

I am going to get a copy of this book for school. Aside from being beautifully illustrated and presented, the information is clear and easy to understand and explains concepts in detail but without being too complicated.

This is a super cool dictionary of world politics terms everyone should know. Each page is a description and large illustration. As a homeschooling family, this will be a book we use often.

The ideas were succinctly presented, but I would have loved more entries. 100 words does make sense for an intro to politics, for children or whoever.

A very good social studies primer, looking at all things political, from how a country is run and governed up to the economical terms like GDP. The format, of a hundred word essay for all of a hundred terms, might not guarantee a brilliant book, and clearly one way to get towards assuring that is with the accompanying design. And here that's wonderful, really snappily conveying the meaning of the terms, and bringing an almost old-school political cartooning to it. The fact things are, when possible, put in relevant pairs – utopia/dystopia, patriotism/racism, etc – also helps comprehension. And it wasn't able to run its course without teaching me something – who else knew where the word 'candidate' came from? A must for the school library, this is a global work too, and not just concerned with the USA way of doing things.

Politics is a subject much talked about in our current climate.  This title, geared to elementary school children aims to educate and open up topics for discussion.  As the title notes, there are 100 words in all.  Just a few of those included are bureaucracy, activist, capitalism, patriotism, leader and more.

Many thanks to NetGalley for this title in exchange for an honest review. This well illustrated reference deserves a place on school and home library shelves.
