I really enjoyed this book! I think the author did a good job of flushing out the characters. I am obsessed with this book coverThank you so much to NetGalley for sending me a copy! I would definitely recommend to all!
This is one of the most unique and weird books I have read in a while. The premise is quite interesting however the narrative's pacing lags midpoint but the action kept up towards the end.
Did not finish at 27%. The cover is really pretty and the premise sounded quirky, but the writing was not for me. I didn't feel invested in what was happening.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
The best part of this novel was how unique it was. I’ve never heard of someone writing a book about being trapped on a jellyfish before! That said, it fell a bit short I’m the plot department. Still a fun, quick read though!
I really like this colorful cover but I will say that the blue cover that has been released would catch my eye for sure. Anyways, the plot of this book is kind of hilarious -- a bunch of people stuck on a giant jellyfish. Unfortunately, I think this story itself fell a little flat from the premise. I was hoping for more but appreciate the novel-ness of this plot.
I was initially drawn to the premise of this book (and that awesome cover!), but I found the execution lacking and the dialogue stilted. The characters are lovable, though, and I wish they had been given more time to develop as the survival story unraveled.
Not the book for me. I usually like weird books but this felt like it was weird for the sake of being weird and had no other purpose. It also didn't do a good job of explaining how/why they got on the jellyfish.
I am disappointed with this book. I was expecting one thing and received another. It had potential but it was not well written.
The premise is like nothing I've heard of and that was very intriguing.... the story was enjoyable but i felt like something was missing until about 80% through the book. The last 5-6 chapters were excellent and i had to see what happened!
sadly, before i could download this title, netgalley took it off their catalog. that means i can’t review this one. HOWEVER, i will be checking in with my library to see if i can get a copy and review it that way
Originally I didn't think the concept of "trapped on a giant jellyfish" would be taken literally, but it is! The premise of this book seemed really cool and that’s why I originally requested it. But I ended up not being able to finish this book because it was so confusing. Creative ideas, but not great in execution.
Cannot review as Netgalley archived the book before I could read it & my new Kindle does not have this title.
Aw man, I wish I could've liked this one but unfortunately it fell for me and that's surprising becaue this concept is so unique! Literally being trapped on a jellyfish. You can't help but race to the end to see WHAT is going to happen. I felt like the story was all over the place and tbh it seemed like the author just added in unnecessary scenes. It started to get better and the ending was decent. I honestly just did not care about the characters or the humor that seem to riddle this book.
Full review to come on my YouTube channel.
This book had a very interesting premise. I really enjoyed the idea that humans have essentially ruined the planet (or at least, ruined ocean life enough that it chose to fight back) and they must now deal with the consequences in this dystopian. I liked that the teenagers in the novel made comments about how the world is essentially ruined for them and that need to be the cause for change - even with life comes at you very scary crab like monsters! I was very pulled into the book in the beginning because it was such an absurd concept and Rees has a very easy writing style to get into. But my problem with the novel lies in the fact that there just did not seem to be anything else besides this concept and its commentary. Aside from very direct lines commentating on the themes of the novel, there was no other meat to the plot. I think, were the novel to be a bit longer and had more of an engaging plot, I would have really enjoyed it. Overall while I did enjoy the first quarter of the novel, it began to slog and lose my interest. I still think this take on post-apocalyptic was interesting, I just wish it had more depth.
I rarely DNF books, especially when I receive e-arcs, but unfortunately this really didn't jive with me. I loved the concept, but not so much the execution. I found the writing was wordy and difficult to follow, even as an adult. This was one of those books I found myself spacing out while re-reading the same sentence over and over.
The idea and the premise of the book were initially what peaked my interest, but as I continued reading, I found it harder to continue. I understand the concept of depicting the end of humanity (climate change) using a giant jellyfish, but I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I did enjoy the characters and it is a light read, but I felt that the book’s conclusion left a lot of unanswered questions.
I honestly could not connect with the writing or the characters, so I did not finish the book. I did LOVE the cover. The story would have done much better with a good edit and less words, more action/plot.
So I was lucky to get a chance to read this book and then Covid happened and I have been in a horrible reading slump. I started this book months ago and was really intrigued by the concept, but when in a reading slump the digital books really get left behind. Realized the archive date was coming up and tried to get it finished in a day. Fell asleep with it in my hands with 50 pages to go and an hour left :(
This is just the coolest end of the world kind of story I have ever read and I'm dying to know how it ends!!! I could just kick myself for not finishing it sooner. Come on library copy so I can finish it and pass it on to all the others I think will love it too!
This is great for all ages (there is a small scene mentioning sex and grunting, but that is the extent of it. And I do not remember any swearing, so if there was it was rare. This would make for a great discussion in a group and I will suggest it for sure!
Just reviewed Jelly by Clare Rees. #JellyYa #NetGalley
This was such a weird book. I couldn't get into it at all. I dnf it pretty early on. It was really weird and confusing in parts. I really couldn’t wrap my mind around it and understand what was going on.
