The Animal Embroidery Workbook is a delightful collection of projects for both the experienced and budding embroiderer.
The author provides a clear overview of basic materials, tools, and methods to start you off, and then come the projects! They progress in difficulty starting from the fairly easy, to the more complex.
I have been doing cross stitch since I was a child, and I thought this was a great way to dip my toe in to other types of stitching. (Random side note: I was pleased that the author used DMC cottons and provided the exact shades, so I won't have any trouble finding the colours I need.)
While access to the patterns is obviously absent in the eARC, I found that the instructions were very clear and easy to follow, and I am looking forward to purchasing a copy so I can truly get started.
There are dozens of adorable patterns, but I am particularly looking forward to stitching the Wildflower Fawn for my mother, and the Cuddling Kittens for myself. But there are so many other to try, including hummingbirds, pandas, hedgehogs, foxes, koalas, otters and more.
The Animal Embroidery Workbook has a great set of instructions at the beginning, going through the process of transferring the pattern, how to use a hoop, stitch basics, essential equipment, and the like. The patterns are adorable and presented in a way that are completely inspiring. Some of the animals are challenging, but many are doable for beginners.
As an experienced stitcher, I was impressed as to the manner in which the author imparted the information. The part I did not like, however, was that the author kept referring to her youtube channel and website for more information. When I purchase a book, especially a crafting one, I do not want to have to refer to other media. Not having all of the information right at my fingertips was a big turn-off for me. Overall, the Animal Embroidery Workbook is full of cute and cuddly critters and is one I would recommend to my fellow crafters.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy of Animal Embroidery Workbook
Step-by-Step Techniques & Patterns for 30 Cute Critters & More. Neither NetGalley nor the publisher, Landauer, required me to read this publication. The choice to review this book was my own.
Pros: In an incredibly stressful year like 2020 and now 2021, creating art through embroidery is a fantastic way to distract my hands from social media. Although I have embroidered tea towels using iron-on transfers, I’ve never tried thread painting. I haven’t made an attempt yet, but I know that an owl portrait would be my first project. Not only was I inspired by this book to attempt thread painting, I also learned new stitches and techniques.
Cons: Although the author/artist does a great job making this book accessible to embroiderers of all skill levels, including beginners, there might be some embroiderers who struggle to learn by reading a book. For those visual learners, I suggest watching some how-to videos on YouTube to supplement what they learn in this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for the opportunity to read this book!
The book does exactly what it promises to do and more. The book is outlines from beginners to expert embroiders so it is a very good book to get projects from even if you are just starting out. The book covers a variety of animals many of which are less common such as red pandas. The book it sure to include other aspects to the template other than the animal itself adding flowers and at times backgrounds. There are many unique tips sprinkled throughout the book that even experienced embroiders would enjoy and even a unique project at the end. The guides to each template are very detailed and easy to follow which is exciting because the work is so beautiful. One of my favorite aspects about the book is it’s comprehensive guide to thread painting and the beautiful detailed works that come with it. While this book does not have the most templates it certainly has well though out pieces. The books covers a comprehensive guide to various materials without being too biased towards specific brands or quality. There is even a guide to embroidering Jewelry. While the stitch guide covers the basics it does provide guides more complex stitches, however, the drawn images accompanying the stitch guide were most unhelpful. It perhaps would have been better to use an image(s) or a diagram of the various steps. This book however it not necessarily designed to be a book for beginners but more of complementing pattern book for any embroiderer.
I really enjoyed this book. The projects were so cute and with really good instructions and explanations. I think this would be a great read for brand newbies to embroidery all the way to more advanced stitchers. The patterns and projects were really well done and very up to date and fresh, which I really with appreciate with embroidery books especially because it is often thought of as old or outdated.
The animal embroidery workbook is a workbook for “beginners” and I’m glad the author shared her journey about how she started embroidery and why.
This includes all the basic stuff on:
• Hoops
• Transferring patterns
• Stitches
• Floss
The book is full of colorful illustrations and 30 step by step projects to try. She also give helpful insight for making all of this easier. She shares her own tips and experiences on how to create these cute projects.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to give embroidery a try.
Thank you Fox Chapel Publishing via Netgalley for this free ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
This Animal Embroidery Workbook goes through the basics of getting started with hand embroidery, but in a thorough and professional way, which I found incredibly helpful and educational, even as someone who has been hand stitching for quite a while.
The illustrated guides on how to do various stitches, which needles to use for what, etc. are so brilliantly drawn and laid out, they make it easy to understand without having to watch endless YouTube videos. I love a well written guide, they make learning so much easier.
The patterns in this book are so exquisitely sweet, I want each of them (possibly excluding the unicorn...) hanging in my house, or made into patches for my clothes.
I particularly enjoyed the section about patch making, as that is something that I have wanted to do for a long while, but had a hard time finding a simple instructional for online.
There are a lot of interesting ideas in this book such as the double framed pieces, and adapting a pattern to make a smaller version for a necklace.
I love the way this book is laid out and written, it is beautifully clear in communication, yet friendly and accessible. I would absolutely buy this book for a beginner stitcher, or someone who has been embroidering for years.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I had no idea how many kinds of embroidery floss there are, and still don't know but the fact that there are over 175 colors used for this book is crazy!
With clearly described instructions this book is great for animal lovers who want to learn to do embroidery!
So gorgeous! Possibly too advanced for general use (public library), but so much inspiration! I may end up purchasing it for the collection anyway. If we were a bigger library, I definitely would.
Thank you to @netgalley, the publisher and author for gifting me this free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love cross stitch and love to look for new ideas. This book is just adorable. So many lovely ideas and the thing I loved is the explanation of different kinds of stitches and the reading of the scheme.
There are schemes for beginners, more advanced cross-stitchers...
Generally really lovely book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for ideas.
Wow these patterns are so adorable! The instructions look very in depth and helpful. I can't wait to try the hedgehog pattern especially! I plan to buy the book the next time I'm at the bookstore. I haven't tried, but it would probably be really hard to trace the pattern from my kindle download of the ARC book to a piece of fabric.
Thank you to Landauer Publishing for the opportunity to review this book. I foresee many hours of embroidery enjoyment!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The designs are great and the instructions seem detailed. Unfortunately I cannot test any of the designs as my copy apparently does not come with the actual patterns.
Great book. She does a really good job walking you through embroidery from start to finish: from what supplies to buy to what to do before you can hang your finished product on the wall. The patterns are so cute! I also like that she has a mix of patterns at varying skill levels - from beginner to advanced. The only thing I struggled with is learning how to do different types of stitching from the visuals. I'm normally a really visual person, but I struggled to understand - in that case, I just plan to go to youtube how to do the stitching, and then use the book for everything else.
I am a beginner in the art of embroidery. I like the easy way the author described things and her art was very cute. I liked how descriptive she was including how she gave names of products she has used instead of just generic descriptions. The embroidery ranged from simple to complex. A gread book for any level embroiderer.
I got this book from netgalley and gave an honest review.
I would recommend getting the book version. The kindle version doesn't show up in color if you have a kindle reader. On my phone it was in color but the formatting was weird and hard to follow. This book is much more fun in color. I'm a beginner at embroidery so I was glad there were easy beginner animals that were still super cute. Well written workbook instructions but maybe a bit farfetched for a beginner beginner still. I adored all of the pattern examples. No i have not tried them all but they all look so cute. The author/artist has great taste and talent.
I received a free copy of this ebook from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

❀ A MUST-HAVE EMBROIDERY BOOK
Animal Embroidery Workbook by Jessica Long is a must-have book for any embroidery enthusiast. The instructions are easy to follow and the images provide lots of inspiration. It is perfect for those looking for a modern book of embroidery patterns at any level.
I learned embroidery from my grandmother as an eight-year-old girl but put it away until earlier this year when the pandemic sent me to work from home. I discovered Jessica Long on Instagram and YouTube as a needlework craftsperson of epic proportions. Her knowledge of her craft is immense, and her ability to teach and share is a beautiful thing. When I saw she had written a book about her sweet animal critters and that it was available to review on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance.
This book is an excellent tutorial for beginning to advanced needleworkers. Jessica describes in detail to beginner embroiderers how to prepare fabric, what to buy, how to embroider, and how to trace the patterns. You name it, and she will tell you how to do it. She also provides patterns for her sweet and lovely animal patterns that have garnered her many fans.
I highly recommend this book to any needlecraft fans, whether just starting out or veterans looking to add to their repertoire. Embroidery is a relaxing and satisfying hobby that I recommend to everyone, and I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I gave it five stars!
I love this workbook! It is filled with the cutest and most adorable embroidery patterns. Each pattern comes with a list of needed materials and colors you can use. This makes the patterns easy to create. I can't wait to start on a new embroidery project! The Smiling Sloth and Hedgehog Bouquet are two of my favorite patterns.
This book is not only filled with adorable animals to embroider, but it also is a wonderful starting book for those who are just embarking on their embroidery journey.
The instructions were clear and easy to follow, in addition they contained illustrations of what each stitch is and what it's supposed to look like.
This book gives you the building blocks you need to start making some darling creations.
I believe this book would be wonderful for beginners and advanced embroiders alike.
