This book contains 65 brain teasers which are American based situations which for me made some of the clues hard as I don't understand the context.
Overall they are interesting but take more than 60 seconds to consider. You're presented with a scenario and then prompted to answer a question at the end of the scenario. Some of the answers are sort of obvious but then throw in a curve ball as to who did it or sometimes it says how it was done but not by who.
Overall I'm not sure about these, they certainly take more than the 60 seconds and some I had to read a few times to understand the situation as we were dropped in mid conversation with no context.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
I didn't love this one, and I didn't hate it either. It was honestly just a "middle of the road" type of book. Some puzzles were interesting, some...not so much. It also seemed geared more towards a younger crowd.
I am currently a gifted resource teacher, and this book has short puzzles that are great as a mind break, warm-up and fillers if you have a few extra minutes at the end of class. Summer Corner than others, and although they are all related to crime there's nothing too gory that you can't use with students.
I really enjoyed this one!
I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
This was a fun puzzle book to help exercise my brain. These mini brain teasers were just enough to do a few at a time in between breaks and to share with some friends. Definitely great as a stocking stuffer or a gift for your sleuthy friends.
60 Second Brain Teasers Crime Puzzles is a fun book. It reminded me of the 60 second mysteries I read as a kid. In fact, that is what first drew my attention to the book. It instilled a bit of childhood nostalgia, as well as testing my puzzle solving skills as an adult.

I am admittedly not always great at these books, but I was kind of disappointed in this one.
The scenarios have varying degrees of difficulty which is good, but I feel they could be organized better. We would go through 2-3 that we just couldn’t get and then the next one would be so obvious we’d think surely we were overlooking something. I feel like having sections or increasing difficulty may be better, but that’s pretty subjective.
The biggest issue I have with this book is that the presentation is incredibly boring. It’s just words on a page essentially. And while that’s what a book is of course, I feel books like this do better with an interactive element. Have some photos or something at least to look at as well as read. This isn’t really a fun family activity because it’s just me reading a paragraph out loud. I would’ve liked to be able to show some pictures or a scene that was relevant to the scenario.
One thing to mention is to pay attention to what question is being asked. Many times the answer would involve a long drawn out resolution that we’d have no way of knowing from the original scenario, but wasn’t necessary either. For instance, it would ask something like “Is it true she died before 3pm?” And the yes or no answer is able to be deduced from the story given; however, the answer would include this long drawn out background story. So we’d get frustrated because there’s no way of knowing that’s the reason behind the “yes or no” answer but then I’d have to stress that the yes/no is all that was asked. Hopefully that makes sense.
Overall I’m going with 3 stars because there were some fun mysteries but the presentation just wasn’t there for me.
I was given a copy of this book in return for my honest review. Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this opportunity.
These were some very interesting puzzles! I enjoyed reading the puzzles and trying to solve them.
There was a good amount of puzzles that I had to stop and really think about and some that I couldn't solve. I recommend this to everyone to at least try!
Remember when the Scholastic Book Fair would come to school as a kid? Best day ever! I loved the brain teaser books. 60-second Brain Teasers brings back my giddy childhood joy. Short and sweeter perfect for break time at work. Can you solve all of them without peeking at the answers in the back of the book? I double dog dare you to try!
I knew I had to get this book the second I saw “brain teasers” and “puzzles” in the title! I’m a big fun of various mind games, and I enjoyed this book a lot. Also, it would make a great gift for all the puzzle lovers out there.
This was a fun puzzle book, I liked the puzzles and it reminded me of a board game I had as a kid (but I can't recall the name now). The puzzles were in a good range of difficulty, some more simple than others, but it made the experience interesting. Some were a bit too hard to guess as I felt even given the answer you had to make a lot of assumption, but that was maybe just me.
Something that was not the most practical, at least for me, was the going back and forth in the digital pdf copy of the book to check the answer. I think it's a book I'd have enjoyed more as physical copy on my coffee table to grab when I had a few minutes to relax. That being said it has more to do with the format I got than the book itself, which I found overall enjoyable.
This was a really fun little puzzle book. I requested it as I thought it would be a great pass time for me and my husband to sit and do together whilst spending a lot of time at home.. It contains short scenarios or stories that pose a question at the end that you have to figure out using the clues from the stories details. We found the majority of the brain teasers were actually really difficult! I'm unsure if that's a refection on the book or us! We found we were thinking way too literally so I would advise people try and think a little more outside the box if you want to figure them out. Its definitely a really nice book to have that you can grab if you have 10 minutes to spare and want to work your brain out a little.
60-SECOND BRAIN TEASERS: CRIME PUZZLES by M. Diane Vogt is exactly what it promises to be: "Short Forensic Mysteries to Challenge Your Inner Amateur Detective." There are 65 mysteries and each is described in a page or two, with answers grouped together at the back of the book. I noticed an emphasis on forensics, DNA, etc., and found this to be an entertaining collection – in many ways perfect for our shortened attention span and difficulty concentrating during this pandemic.
This is a good book for teens or adults who like cop shows and mysteries, along the lines of the old Encyclopedia Brown mysteries. Each one is truly very short, taking up less than two pages of large print. Answers are in the back, which makes this a difficult read as an eBook. The puzzles are often really easy to figure out, but in other cases they require knowledge the reader may not have.
I got 40/65! I quite enjoyed these - they’re perfect quick little reads (60 seconds is right!) which were perfect during my busy work-from-home days where I could just pop in anytime and read one. And I learned a lot of random facts about the ones I couldn’t figure out! A few I felt were worded in a way that gave away the answer, but I couldn't always figure out the reasoning behind it.
I enjoyed solving the crime puzzles. If you love detective stories you would love this.
Many thanks to NetGalley, M. Diane Vogt and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
This was a fun book to dip into - I was kicking myself when I found out most of the answers! When I was younger I always wanted to be a detective when I grew up - I think this book has shown me that it’s a good job I didn’t become one as I’d be rubbish! Great puzzles! Good fun and something a bit different!
60-Second Brain Teasers Crime Puzzles
Short Forensic Mysteries to Challenge Your Inner Amateur Detective is a lot of fun, full of interesting brain teasers that really allow you to become a detective. Great way to spend an afternoon, something that will appeal to all ages.
Crime Teasers.....
Sixty five short crime teasers to solve with answers supplied. Some puzzles are more easily solved than others although on the whole are rather simplistic. A fun book to dip into at leisure or perhaps for family entertainment.
This is a great book. The brain teasers are short stories (only a few paragraphs) that make you think about the situation. I thought some were kind of obvious, but then again, I have been reading true crime and forensics for many years.. I really did like them, too. The writing was great and it really kept my attention. In fact, I read it all in one sitting because I could not put it down. I wanted to know the next puzzle. I highly recommend it. It was a lot of fun to do.
