I've been a fan of Orville Schell since "To Get RIch is Glorious," but I was unable to make headway with this novel. Perhaps because I've been reading his non-fiction so long, this novel seemed like so many others about China at the time of the Cultural Revolution. Sprinkling Chinese characters on every page made it feel as though I was reading something with subtitles.
I like Schell too much to post this to Goodreads.
