Review:
This was a charming, engaging read with interesting, well-developed characters. I enjoyed the detailed, atmospheric descriptions of Paris. This story was character driven and a good read.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for this Arc in exchange for a review.
After a broken engagement she chose to do Julie Ryan finally feels a sense of freedom and like a modern woman.
It is 1956 and she is determined to show others she is modern, capable and independent.
Visiting Grandmère Lubin’s majestic home in Paris is just how she'll do it.
Madame Lubin has her own agenda for her granddaughter though. Dressing her in the latest Parisian fashions she introduces her around . From there she meets the handsome and exciting the handsome Charles Patrice.
He shows her around Paris and their connection grows but he's not free to love her. Can it somehow work out?
Charming read!
This was a charming read with interesting, well-developed characters. It was quite character-driven, and I loved the detailed, atmospheric descriptions of Paris. Take your time soaking up this novel; you won’t regret it!
I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
A sweet, old time romance, set in romantic Paris. The writing is slightly dated at times but overall OK. The characters are likable and engaging.
A good read.
This book was a lovely, engaging read. It felt quite old fashioned in it's writing style, and I really took to it right away. Paris is inherently romantic and chic, and right away I was whisked away to a world of romance and light. It is full of tenderness, love, and wonderful detail about the city of light.
It's really a treat to read and escape to Paris in this chaotic year.
This book was so easy to read and to follow. The author takes you on a romantic love story through Paris.
It begins and finishes with an English girl in love. However she goes to Paris to escape her English love and subsequently finds new Parisian love. The story takes you on a journey of the new love throughout Paris. A very detailed adventure with parties and romance with quite a plot twist.
Very enjoyable read.
I wasn't able to connect with the characters or enjoy the story. The concept was good and the story had a lot of potentials. That's why my rating is higher than just one star.
The book felt very character-driven, almost surprisingly so - all the drama centred around the romance, the main antagonist is a spurned ex, very little actually happens that's not the main character going to parties for the purpose of meeting her maybe boyfriend and making sad romance noises in between fêtes. I don't mind this, I wish more books were character-driven, but I guess it's a bit of a gamble in that this focus really only works if you like or are engaged with the characters. Alas for this book, I didn't very much love Julie or Charles. I guess that's what my review comes down to: didn't love the characters, was generally unengaged with their antics. Probably more my fault than theirs! This book's redeeming (?) feature was actually its age, I only picked it up because I saw that it had been published in the 50s and as a historical artefact I was consistently tickled by it. People were fully nuts back then too, huh ! I am approx 600% sure that this is not how people lived in the 50s or in France, just, ever, but I loooove consuming media that tries this hard to present me with an idealised alternate world adjacent to our own, there's something so fascinating about how there's this form of creativity that wants to paper over the cracks and disappointments of the real world and leave basically no trace of it behind (golden age hollywood films are truly excellent value for this imho). I think this is why I get so bored with brutal boring kitchen sink drama like look bro I KNOW the world is shit, you think I need to be told about how you an English rose in the 1950s are going to marry a boring man with zero income and zero likeability levels who is averaging like a 60% chance of turning into an abuser at any given moment?? No!!! Send her to Paris and give her a rich grandma, whatever, I don't care, give her a new wardrobe that turns her into an irresistible seductress, all the boys love her instantly, France loves her, the new boyfriend she finds is arguably just as terrible as the old one but it's okay because he's rich and French, maybe? The question mark means I don't think I agree, but it's all just more nutrition for my hungry stupid brain which is always on the prowl for idiot things to read. Bad takes abound!! Two stars for a solid contribution to my descent into genuine insanity, thank you to NetGalley and Sapere Books for an ARC in exchange for a frenzied review!
My Review: Thank you, Netgalley, for sending me an eARC of English Miss in exchange of an honest review.
This book follows the story of Julie Ryan who goes on a trip to Paris to visit her grandmother and also to recover from a bad breakup. Although she did have an idea that her grandmother is rich, but not that she is one of the aristocratic families of France. At first she finds it difficult to keep up with the royal standards of their life style there as she has always led a simple life in England. To add fuel to fire, her grandmother wants her to dress up elegantly and meet with potential suitors, especially one, Charles Patrice, whose family is equally wealthy and aristocratic. Julie and Charles start resenting each other at first, but find each other attractive after a few meet ups. Julie starts liking Charles’ chivalrous nature, poise and calm personality, and Charles also finds her beautiful, fresh, intelligent and charming English girl. The thing that Julie did not know is that her grandmother is the one who set up their dates, and is secretly planning their marriage.
One of the things that I liked about this book is its writing style. Writer’s way of using multi points of view has given some clarity and coherence to the story. Also because of this, you can connect with all the characters. As I hated the grandmere first, but her point of view made her character clearer and more understanding.
This book is also like a grand tour to Paris. You will come to know about numerous tourist attractions and French food that you are recommended to try if you ever go to Paris. Additionally, the author has provided a detailed description of the city with every minute detail of their dressing style, extravagant parties, glamorous mansions of aristocratic society and what not.
Despite brimming with all these qualities, the story itself felt to leave a long-lasting mark on me. It felt like the author created Julie and Charles in the image of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, and failed completely. I might have liked Julie’s character if she was not so obsessed with Charles who, though tried to be charming and caring, looked a bit misogynist with a fair share of arrogance. He insisted Julie to be honest and loyal with her, and tell him everything about her life, but in turn did not want to confide in her about his private life, and personal apartment.
Though the book is inspiring with all the surrounding details, it lacks the depth in characterization. I did not dislike the story, but it was definitely not my cuppa.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really enjoyed this book, loved the storyline and also the characters. Great read
A charming read filled with interesting, well developed characters. The author does an excellent job with the story development in an interesting plot. It was the perfect read for a Sunday afternoon.
I would like to thank Lewis Cox, Sapere Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The book is written in a superb style, so easy to read, full of tenderness and love, and at the same time obscured by intrigue and hidden agendas. And with so many details that as you read, the images come to life before your eyes, like watching a movie. It simply left me without sleep. I couldn't leave the book until I read the last sentences beautifully blended together of this amazing novel.
The author will take you on a beautiful and detailed trip through Paris, where every well-integrated description and detail of the city will make you want to visit it. The glamour of romantic Paris in the last century, the ticket behind the scenes of the show, in the lives of the French aristocracy, where there are completely different rules. What is allowed and what is not? Can love be bought? What is the real choice - love or the powerful family rules, which determine in advance who you should love? What will prevail - old beliefs or the power of modern times? What if a common path can be found?
Strong, independent and absolutely beautiful, young Julie is only the last piece in the puzzle, a pawn in the game of her rich and powerful family - once unacceptable, and now the granddaughter worthy to be the bright spot on the Paris aristocratic scene. Wrapped in a fog of luxury and wealth, she meets Charles, the most wanted bachelor, a true representative of the French aristocracy, and here begins the game of cat and mouse, full of passions and misunderstood truths. The bittersweet taste of the true affection. Lots of meetings, lots of magical moments, lots of love ... but is that enough? What does it really mean to love? What is the price to be paid for a few moments of endless happiness? And how to say goodbye, while with the hand you try to save the imprint of heat .... and fingers ... that offer you the world in the palm of your hand? To change the world, they may not have the power, but can Julie and Charles find the will to change themselves?
Definitely the book is simply inspiring, the characters built in every way, the scenery so detailed. And no, you will not understand the story if you read it quickly, if you read it with passion, it will definitely pamper all your senses.
Charming book, interesting enough characters. I don’t know if I would purchase it for myself, would of liked a little bit more “action”. But I can see this could be a hit with a good many people.
ENGLISH MISS by LEWIS COX is a romance novel reminiscent of Cinderella, where a badly dressed but beautiful English girl, Julie Ryan, goes to stay with her grandmother, Madame Lubin, in Paris, to get over her broken engagement. There are no ugly sisters or wicked stepmother involved, but Julie is not used to the way her life seems to have been taken out of her hands, although she enjoys the spoiling.
Her growing relationship with "prince charming", Charles Patrice, is threatened by the French custom of arranged marriages, the arrival of Harvey, her ex fiancé and the interference of a beautiful actress.
It is really a delightful read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Sapere Books. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
