What a joy it is to open this book up, and see pink t-shirt wearing, tattooed, Dad, knitting on his beautiful flower filled balcony.
This may not be a book that set out to be ‘about’ breaking gender stereotypes, but that’s what this book does, in the best way, without making it the point of the story. Yes the Dad wears pink, and yes, he grows beautiful flowers and knits, but the story doesn’t make a big deal out of it. Just like we see Robert and all of his toys, everything from trucks, robots and trains, to baby dolls and princess dress ups.
All of that aside, it’s a fun, slightly crazy story about best laid plans, going slightly awry and the AB CD t-shirt is bound to get a giggle from most adults reading this one too.
You just know what’s going to happen when the invitations, go flying, and it didn’t disappoint. This is such a fun story, full of colour and imagination. I found myself going back to the illustrations, and looking more closely at the pictures on the wall, and the books on the shelf, there's a lot of detail in the illustration. It’s so nice to see a story where the family is just taking time to be together, be it reading, knitting, baking or playing.
I do have one concern though. I am not sure about the actual cake? I am guessing it’s not real, because it doesn’t get baked, and the decorations are excellent, but not edible…and it’s on the floor?!...but the Dad is mixing something up in the kitchen, so what is he making? It shouldn’t matter, and it probably won’t to most readers, but I kind of want to know. I will be interested to see if any young readers question this, or if it’s my far too literal adult brain!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Robert and the worlds best cake is a funny children's picture book about a little boy who decides he's going to host a party and make a huge cake for all his friends and dad.
The invitations blow away much to Robert and his dads dismay but they decide to make the huge cake anyway.
After the cake is ready they suddenly hear a knock on the front door and it turns out their friends found their invites in the street.
I love how the story shows how a community can come together from all different walks of life, and have fun sharing pleasure and happiness together.
Bem is a beautiful book about a son who stays at home with his father and wants to make a giant cake.
The design is very good, and the story is also beautiful.
The pictures of this kindergarten level book are stunning. The little details are what makes it particularly fun. The colours are a big draw and I would love seeing posters of it to put in the children’s bedroom. The story is very light, not much to it, and that’s where this picture book loses stars. It’s cute, full of imagination, I love that the characters all go along with Robert’s pretend play… but I think I like a clearer message.
A cute story for children about a small boy and his dad making the biggest cake!
It did nothing for me, but the art was cute and I'm sure children will love it.
I thank Netgalley for the ARC
This was a fun read and I loved the illustrations.
The story was easy to read and follow and my daughter enjoyed it too as I read it to her before bedtime tonight – she is currently in to having tea parties so she thought Robert’s idea was great!
The only thing I did think was that the story seemed to end a little abruptly and it could have done with another page or two just to finish it off.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
This book is fulllllll of colour. It is so vibrant and captured your attention right from the very start.
The story is also cute, and heartwarming. It has cake, it has cute pet. It is all in all just very very positive story that will cheer you up. It is about friendship, about being kind, about sharing and about celebration!
Seriously in love with the illustration and the story! :)
A delightful, over the top, sugary sweet treat for young readers, packed with whimsy and bright, colorful illustrations.
I really liked that this book was about a boy spending time with his dad and they decide to make a cake. You don't see that in a lot of picture books.
I loved how Roberts big tough tattooed dad was happy to play with him and make batter, etc. However, I likely wouldn't eat cake with a bunch of toys shoved into it.
Robert wants to make an awesome cake! Well, here we go. The illustrations are awesome. I loved the details put into the pages — you can definitely see the talent and care. The storyline is cute and would obviously entertain a child. Definitely recommended for young readers.
Robert and the World’s Best Cake was an amazing read. The kids loved reading it aloud and watching the day unfold as Robert and his dad host a cake party. Little did they know all the guests who would appear! The drawings were so much fun and lovely. The drawings were the kids favourite part! The story and characters are so creative and the attention to detail was wonderful. Such an engaging read. It's the perfect book to read aloud with family.
Wonderfully-illustrated book about a young boy and his dad who are home together when the boy decides he wants to have a "cake party." His invitations blow off the balcony into the wind, and they wind up with many more guests than expected.
I loved that the boy was home alone with his, gasp, tattooed dad and they had a fun day baking together.
What a cute story for pre-schoolers with wonderful illustrations.! What I like about this story is that Robert was home with his dad (not his mom!) and they decide to make a big cake and have a party. Robert makes invitations for all of his friends and a gust of wind blows them all away. Robert and his dad make the cake anyway, and lo and behold at party time a bunch of people show up for some cake. The story is funny and silly and good for children who like the pictures as much as the words. I guarantee that any little one reading this book will want to bake a cake themselves!
My thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for allowing me to read and review this book.
Robert wants to bake the the biggest cake ever - the best in the whole wide world! He creates wonderful invitations to distribute but alas a wind blows through his window, scoops them up and off they go. Oh my! Did that deter his mission? No way! His dad helps him assemble the monster cake and Robert and his dog Mopsi decorate it from top to bottom. Perfect!
Just as he and his dad are taking their first bite the door bell rings. Now who on earth could be on the other side? The two get the surprise of their life - one that sends them off to the kitchen to make even a bigger cake. Robert's cake is certainly in demand and he will deliver.
The illustrations are delightful, full of humour, colourful, with lots of detail. I love them. The story, although preposterous, will please kids of all ages. It's a very fun read. The book is a celebration of sharing and community. I highly recommend it.
I was pleasantly surprised with this children's book about a boy called Robert who baked a big cake in order to have a cake party. His party didn't go to plan but there was a happy ending which filled Robert with joy. The story of this book was lovely and I enjoyed seeing Robert do a lot of things with his Dad and his dog. The illustrations were very bright and colourful. My daughter enjoyed the book too and immediately said that she wanted to also have a party and have a big cake!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this review copy!
Robert and the World's Best Cake is such a charming story, filled with great, subtle details and vibrant, lovely illustrations. The story follows Robert and has father when they decide to have a great cake party and make invitations, only to have them blown away! With the two left, Robert decides to have the party with his dad and adorable puppy as the two he can now invite...and then others start showing up!
There are such small details in these pages that represent larger messages, and I enjoyed spotting them each time I read through them: mentioning how Robert had to clean his toys out of the way so he could have a clean work space to bake; filling his day with creativity and baking, as opposed to TV or devices; the father being the one home with his son and helping him create the cake and attending his cake party; and the diversity in his party guests are all such small details that build layers of talking points and representation with children.
The illustrations themselves are also darling and so colourful and stimulating, something all children will enjoy flicking the pages through. There's so many little details drawn in as well, which is exciting for children to point out and discover, as well as the little nods to what the adult will pick up (namely, the dad's shirt! I loved that detail!).
Overall, this was a fun and silly book that children and adults can enjoy, And, I'm always a proponent for anything that encourages more cake!
Robert and the World's Best Cake is the story of a little boy throwing a cake party for himself, his dad, and his dog. after his invitations are blown away. This is a super sweet story and the illustrations are so lovely and whimsical.
Cute story about a boy who decides to have a cake party with his father. Invitations and prep is made, but the weather blows their designs away. Soon, all kinds of people start knocking at the door for a cake party! Super cute story about a boy and his dad spending time together.
Robert plans to have a cake party for his dad and dog. He spends the day preparing to make the best cake ever. This is a sweet book about a father and son that will be exciting for kids. I liked the creativity used in decorating the cake.
