Cute, easy to understand for this age group. An interesting series for young readers bookshelves.Other books in series are also very nice.
This is a brightly illustrated book for children to discover how bread, cookies, cakes, and more are made fresh daily. Turn the pages and step into the life of a baker. The book is very detailed from items used in the kitchen to all the options the baker can make and decorate. Children and adults will enjoy getting to know a baker’s life.
Thank you Netgalley and Clavis Publishing for the opportunity to read a copy.
My son read this book online for a reading report. He liked it although I did not read the book myself.
A cute illustrated guide as to what bakers do and what their day looks like!
My husband is a baker and this was a great way to show my daughter what he does at work! It also showcases the various tools and ingredients bakers use that we use in our own kitchens too: flour, butter, rolling pins, cake tins, etc. Though it’s simply written and easy to understand, there’s a lot of information here: who makes your favorite yummy treats? Bakers! The baker wakes up in the middle of the night to work, wears special clothes, and he starts on bread and works on pastries later.
My daughter really enjoyed this book and I plan to purchase our own copy as I’m sure she’ll turn to it again and again as she grows older.
This book is so adorable; the illustrations are endearing and made me smile, while the text made me hungry! If you know a child who likes rolls, cakes, pies and more, they may well enjoy this book about what bakers do and how they do it. They will learn some interesting facts; for example, bakers get up early in the morning and why they wear white clothes.
I enjoyed this title. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this e galley. All opinions are my own.
Calling all little bakers!! Get ready to learn what bakers do in this fun book. Bright colors & fun illustrations will have you wanting either to play patty cake with your littles or bake something yummy to fill those tummys...or take a visit to your local bakery for something fresh & special. So cute for an add on to a birthday gift too!!
Bestselling author-illustrator Slegers returns with the Professions Series, focusing this time on bakers. While Slegers is a full-time graphic designer, she never resorts to computers in books written for children, innately understanding that toddlers connect most with human illustrations, often the very materials they are able to use (crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, etc.). It is what makes her illustrations so charming--they aren't as commonplace as the Pixar-style, computer-generated illustrations seen in many children's books today.
The book opens a window for children to the jobs of bakers--how they actually begin their shifts in the middle of the night because they must begin long before customers arrive, the tools they use, etc. Depending on the age of the child, Bakers and What they Do really helps kids to at least become more aware of the processes that occur in the kitchen and for the more aware, ask questions about the day-to-day of bakers and what is involved in baking. Slegers has been writing about multiple jobs for years now in her Professions Series and this is a welcome addition. The Kevin and Katie series is another worthwhile book series by the same author, often investigating a series of events that involve a child's emotions. Her books really bring a warm sense of nostalgia--the smell of fresh food at a bakery--but also help parents have a dialogue about things that are important to children like feelings and what grownups do every day.
There was one section that may be slightly confusing for the aware child, as she writes about bakers continuing to work while shopkeepers conduct business with customers. It might have been helpful to have the baker in the background of the illustration or an additional illustration of the baker continuing work, even after the bakery opens. However, this is a minor quibble. I can honestly say I went out and purchased a book by the author after reading this advance copy.
I thought this book was excellent! It’s cute, very cool designs, and the premise of teaching about the life of a baker is unique to me! I never would’ve thought to get a book like that until I saw it available for request. This would be a great part of a series including all sorts of careers
Bakers and What They Do is a short, easy to read book that give a detailed picture of what it’s like to be a baker. I read this with my 2 year old daughter and she loved it. The pictures are great for a toddler because they aren’t too detailed, and some have labels which is an awesome introduction to words at this age!
There were two things that were a little confusing in the pictures as we read this book together. In the beginning of the book there is a page that lists some things bakers use. Then later in the book there is a page that shows the baker using a paddle to remove the bread from the oven. The paddle is not listed in the beginning if the book, and my daughter noticed the discrepancy.
Also, there is a shopkeeper on the last page that sells the bread to the customer. The text describes this-that the shopkeeper sells the bread while the baker keeps working, but that part did seem confusing to my daughter. I think showing the baker at the end of the book would wrap the story up nicely, but I understand wanting to stay true to the actual role of the profession.
Overall, we enjoyed reading this book! It was fun to do some imaginary play in the kitchen after learning more about a baker. I could see this author and illustrator making more books on different professions. As a mother, and a teacher, I would purchase these books to use with my kids!
Cute, succinct book for kids explaining what bakers do. Talks about how they dress, and what ingredients they use to make various bakery goodies. Nice, bright illustrations.
You can almost smell the bread cooking while reading this book! A yummy descriptive book about what it takes to be a baker. This book describes the process of making bread all the way from the yeast, kneading and baking. This is a cute book to read to kids who love to bake or are interested in cooking. Cute illustrations as well!
Cute little book, with basic but very effective illustrations which tell th story perfectly.
Great book that tells the story about how a baker works in an easy to understand way.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I love all books by author Slegers. The books are easy to read and have fun illustrations and this one about what a baker does is so cute.
This is a cute book about bakers and what they do in an easy and digestible way for kids. This will be an interesting book for kids who are curious about food and the processes of making food.
As they grow older, children become more and more interested in discovering the world around them, more than interested to find out as soon as possible and sometimes it is not easy to answer their questions, which at that period of their lives are an inexhaustible source.
This book is a fantastic choice in that journey of awareness of the world around them, namely discovering the world of bakers and what they really do, using appropriate language structures that fully correspond to the child's ability to understand the content. The way in which the story is presented is absolutely masterful, and at the same time so simple that the children can remain motivated and interested, and the best thing is they can actually understand it. Learning about the different tools, as well as the ingredients, the way the baker dresses, as well as his daily routine, is more than enough for the children to understand what actually represents this profession. Additional pictures that accentuate the most important words related to this profession are just a fantastic addition.
Definitely, my daughter and I enjoyed reading, and I hope that this book will be just a part of a collection of future books that will reveal the world of professions to us.
My daughter and I enjoyed this book about Bakers and what they do at work to to be able to bring bread, cakes and treats to everyone each day. The book was informative and my daughter enjoyed learning about the different tools and equipment that bakers use to do their baking. The illustrations were lovely too.
Thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My baking obsessed three year old LOVED this book! It was cute and informative with adorable illustrations. She especially loved the part where she could point and identify the different kitchen/baking objects. This was a big hit in our house!
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Liesbet Slegers and Clavis Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a really cute book that explains what bakers do, the tools and ingredients they use, and the tasty treats they make.
Any book that encourages kids to learn is a good book in my world!
A pleasing educational book for young readers. The illustrations are colourful and bold, the text easy to understand.
Colourful, easygoing, with a lot of information. A good read for preschool children although the illustration are appealing especially for 2-3 yo.
