This is the first in the Jane Austen Murder Mystery series and I’m looking forward to seeing what they get up to next.
The reimagining of classics, or taking much-loved characters and putting them into new situations is tricky business but the author did it remarkably well and this book was so much fun. The characters and their personalities are much the same, but their environment and professions are much altered. Lizzie Bennet aspires to work at her father’s law firm, and is much thrown together with Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, from a rival firm, as they both fight to prove the innocence of their friend Mr Bingley (who’s been arrested for murder).
The closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous things become. You’ll be shocked to learn who’s behind it all!
I loved the banter between Lizzie and Darcy, but would have liked a little more romance. There’s a touch of it, but mostly the focus is on the mystery side. You’ll be pleased to note that Mr Collins is as odious as ever though.
The audiobook was narrated by Morag Sims, and is a quick 8 hours and 29 minutes. I recognized the narrator’s voice from other audiobooks, and I dare say she's becoming a favorite of mine!
I enjoyed this book! It was not anything special, but it was a cute reimagining of Pride and Prejudice. I enjoyed the twists and dynamics between the characters.
3.5 stars. I love Pride & Prejudice, so I always get excited to find a new to me retelling, or story inspired by P&P. However this one felt a bit too much like fanfic and had too many discrepancies concerning the time period for me to get comfortable with this story. The author does say in a comment at the end that she took liberties with what was allowed of an upper class lady at the time, but it was too much, for example, Lizzie running around sleuthing while unchaperoned. That’s just unbelievable. There are other major one which would give some of the main plot points away, but yes, all these discrepancies distracted me from the story.
Leaving reviews on Goodreads and Amazon.
"Pride and Premeditation" is something like a Regency "Legally Blonde," with all of the hijinks and mystery that implies. Well narrated and fast paced, this book leaves you excited for the sequel. I've never read Pride and Prejudice, but I absolutely loved this book!
I haven’t read P&P, but I think this book is a good gateway into the atmosphere and characters of the original. I can see why people are fond of Elizabeth (Lizzie) --despite the views and traditions held towards women (especially in professions like law), Lizzie goes after what she wants and paves the way for other women in law during this fictional era. I was NOT a fan of Bingley, Mrs. Bennett and Mr Darcy (at first! --he was a bit condescending and off-putting, but I warmed up to him later). I loved seeing Lizzie in action, piecing everything together and I liked that this murder mystery was a feminist women’s lit!
Thanks NetGalley and Harper Audio for my copy!
This was such a fantastic book and I completely adored it!!! Sometimes when I really love a book, it's difficult for me to create a review that captures how much I enjoyed reading the book and sounds above an elementary school writing level. I'm gonna do my best here😅
This was such a unique take on Pride & Prejudice! To be honest, I had the original plot of P&P in the back of my mind the entire time as I was reading this... I was pleasantly surprised that this book was not predictable just because I knew the original like the back of my hand. If it is a loose retelling, then that is a bit of a generous explanation. It has the same elements, locations, etc. as Pride & Prejudice, but with the thrill and mystery that surrounds Stalking Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes.
Most importantly, this book gave me new appreciation for Mr Darcy!😍 He really is such a sweetheart, but this poor thing has social anxiety when it comes to meeting new people and expressing himself. I was really impressed with the creation of Lizzy and Darcy in this world.
The author took some creative liberties that I loved and there were plenty of twists mixed in with the elegant banter between characters. The epilogue provided some cited sources and additional historical facts, expanding on the liberties taken by the author. It was the perfect addition for this nerd! 🤓
And in the Author's note, there was this nonchalant gem, a new favorite way to describe the book:
"I'm sorry about all the murders" 😂
Much like one of my favorite classics, I'll be rereading this one in the future! 💚💜
Great for fans of... Stalking Jack The Ripper Series, And The Clockwork Angel Series, Enola Holmes, Written In The Stars, Bridget Jones, Pride And Prejudice, Agatha Christie, Regency Mystery
Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed Pride and Premeditation. I thought it was faced paced and kept me guessing. I will purchase the book for our library.
I loved this! It's one of my favorites this year! I adored Lizzy so much! I loved her spunk, her love of mysteries, and I loved her character overall. I thought the plot was super unique, and was so well told! I really loved the characters, I thought they brought a lot to the story and I loved how well developed they were! The author really put her own touch on them, and really brought them to life and at times the character personalities surprised me, which I loved! I really love murder mysteries that really are fun, and have a great spin on them! I thought this was a fun novel, and it took you on a really fun ride! Highly highly recommend this book!
Really cute! I love a good P&P retelling, and it’s fun that it crosses genres. I do wish it had taken place in the early 1900s instead of the early 1800s. That would have felt more appropriate to me. Nevertheless, great fun!
A fun take on Jane Austen. I wasn't very invested in the mystery, but I enjoyed the world the author created.
What a fantastic idea! Pairing up old literary classics with a mystery twist is genius and Tizrah Price does an excellent job in the execution! I really enjoyed this audiobook and anxiously await future installments in this new YA mystery series.
I absolutely adored Pride and Premeditation. Tirzah Price did a wonderful job of creating a feminist whodunit take on a beloved Jane Austen classic. It was beautifully written and I devoured it all in one sitting.
Pride and Premeditation follows a scandalous murder mystery and Lizzie Bennett, an aspiring Lawyer at Longbourn & Sons law firm. Lizzie takes it upon herself to solve the case. She is determined to prove that the authorities have accused and arrested the wrong man and to prove to her Father she deserves a position at Longbourn & Sons. As she finds evidence of Charles Bingley innocence, Fitzwilliam Darcy, lawyer at Pemberley Associates, keeps inferring. If you are familiar with Austen's original you would assume correctly that sparks begin to fly between Darcy and Elizabeth. As the case progresses so does their romance. As Lizzie gets closer to solving the case and proving Bingley innocent it is evident that uncovering the truth is becoming a threat to her life.
This is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice in a modern way, made into a murder mystery. Mr. Bennett is a lawyer and Lizzie works with him as an accountant and assistant, wishing to become a solicitor. Mr. Hurst is found dead and Lizzie decides to investigate. Mr. Bingley has been arrested for the murder, Lizzie decides to try to get him as a client. I've never read the original book by Jane Austin but i have watched the movie a few times. It's basically the same idea with Mr. Darcy is a lawyer. This book is fine but the audio is done in an English accent and i stay away from English accents as they as harder for me to understand. If you like Jane Austin retellings then you'll love this book.
The idea of a murder mystery twist on Jane Austen's work is not particulary innovative, but it's still a fun premise. Successful books in this vein manage to balance the historical, romantic, and comedic/satiric elements of Austen's original with the demands of a mystery plot and genre. Unfortunately, Pride and Premeditation didn't really succeed on either front.
While the author included a note on historical accuracy (and her choices about when to stick to historical reality and when to stretch things a bit), it didn't cover everything, and the overall feel and flavor of the book suffered from the historical slopoiness - it took a while before I could even tell for sure that it was meant to be set in the Regency era.
As for the romantic element - it takes a back seat to the mystery, which is fine, but doesn't develop successfully even in the background the way a slow burn romance usually would. Elizabeth's attraction to Darcy seems forced in at awkward intervals, and there's no other romantic storyline but theirs, since Jane and Bingley don't even meet on the page, and their relationship is just a throw away line at the end. The comedy of manners/social satire of the original isn't present, either, replaced with a heavy-handed feminism that wouldn't be out of place except it just lacks any subtlety or sense of history. (Something else, far more petty, that bothered me was lowering Elizabeth's age to 17 - it might have been to make the book fit the requirements of YA, but it didn't make a lot of sense, and it made the lines about Georgiana being only 15 slightly ridiculous.)
Then there's the mystery itself. The solution manages to be at once convoluted and too obvious. The most fun thing about this book is seeing the ways in which the author molded Austen's original characters into her law firm/murder mystery set-up, but that approach means anyone familiar with the original Pride and Prejudice can see the revelations and villains coming from a mile away.
Overall, there just wasn't much going on in this book. On every front, it lacked development, subtlety, and substance, taking the easy, flimsy, or heavy-handed option at every turn. I'm no purist, and I love a good Jane Austen fanfic or adaptation - but this was merely a mediocre one.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperTeen for the advance review copy!
Thank you to Harper Audio / HarperTeen and NetGalley for the advanced audio copy of Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price in exchange for an honest review.
I love Pride and Prejudice and was so excited to see this YA mystery adaptation. I really enjoyed stepping back into the world and reacquainting myself with some of my favorite characters. It was also really, really cool for this to be a mystery.
Tirzah Price did such a great job of keeping the characters similar to how they behaved in Pride and Prejudice but with a twist. I loved the feminist elements and spunky attitude Elizabeth showed!
I do want to note that while I am grateful I received a copy of this book, the voice galley’s production and synthetic voice made it very difficult to follow and stay engaged with the story. The monotone reading made it difficult to discern tense or emotionally charged moments. There was also a vocal watermark every so often that was distracting.
This book is a must include addition to YA shelves for mystery lovers and also gives Pride and Prejudice fans a new reason to check back in with the characters.
I received an advanced copy from the publisher via Netgally for an honest review.
This was SUCH a fun book! Tirzah Price has taken so many characters that we know and love in Jane Austen's world of Pride and Prejudice and shakes it up a bit to make an amazing murder mystery! Within this story though I do love how the author was able to retain so much of the much-ness of each of our beloved characters!
Spunky Lizzie loves helping at her father's law firm, however, as a woman she can never become a barrister. Even though she has been the one investigating and solving cases and the detestable Mr. Collins has taken all the credit through time. Lizzie's father makes her a bargain, find your own small case and solve it and we will go from there. Of course, we all know our strong willed Lizzie and she does not aim for a small case, rather an impressive societal scandal hitting the town! I love how this had a splash of the romance, however, had a different ending then one would expect from a Pride and Prejudice retelling, but not in a bad way. I do hope the author continues these delectable murder mysteries and I shall pick up every single one!
I love Pride and Prejudice retellings. This one was very unique! However I don’t read a ton of historical fiction so I struggled with the writing of this one. If you are a contemporary Pride and Prejudice retelling reader, skip this one. If you like historical/period novels, I think you’d enjoy this and the creativity behind it!
I really enjoyed this retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I always enjoy seeing historical fiction with independent female leads who don't fit what society expects of them.
This story had all the nuances of the original Pride and Prejudice but with murder of course! It was fun seeing all my favorite characters portrayed in a different light. Mr. Bingley has been accused of murder and Lizzie and Darcy work together as his solicitors to prove he didn't do what he's accused of.
I think that the story stayed true to the original tone of pride and prejudice but added the lovely mystery twist. I definitely plan on reading the next books!
This was such a fun interpretation of Pride and Prejudice with a mysterious twist. I pictured Elizabeth as a bit of a young female Sherlock Holmes while reading this. While the true mystery is a bit spoiled by the fact that the 'bad guys' are easy to guess if you have any knowledge of the original plot of the story, it's still fun to see how everything unfolds.
I really enjoyed it! It was fun to revisit the P&P characters but put them in a new situation. I look forward to more in the series so I haven't read any other Austen novels so I won't be as familiar. But this was fun! Lizzie is as tenacious as ever, Wickham is charming, and Darcy is a stodgy stiff. But that is not all! I loved that Lizzie wants to join her father's law firm and that she uses any means possible to try and solve a murder before Darcy. They're tete-a-tetes were a joy!
It's always hard to get into an audiobook that has fake narration, ie a program is reading the words instead of a human being. There is no emotion and there are stops and starts at odd spots, in between words. I don't even I still have complaints about the NetGalley app. It's still very frustrating to pause it and then be unable to start it again but have to reload the app.
