I haven't read fan fiction this good since Pride & Prejudice and Zombies. Elizabeth Bennet as a lawyer working with Darcy and defending Bingley who is accused of a murder? Yes, please! And although the actual murderer was pretty easy to guess, this was so much fun and makes me want to watch the 1996 version of P&P again.
Thank you to Netgalley for this voice galley preview for an honest review. #netgalley #prideandpremeditation
This was my first Voice Galley, and I know that this isn't meant to be a review of the app or recording, but I was pleasantly surprised. NetGalley's app is comparable to the Audible app for listening functions, and it was an all-around pleasant listening experience.
I thought this was a really fun retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. To be honest, I have never read the original, but I have watched and loved several film adaptations, and would count this retelling among my favourites. I really should try to read the original one of these days... 😂
In this completely new and reimagined version of Austen's beloved story, Mr. Bennett is cast as a partner in the law firm Longborn & Sons. Mr. Collins is another solicitor in the same firm, and Mr. Bennett's heir. Charlotte Lucas is the firm's secretary. When Mr. Bingley is accused of murdering his brother-in-law, Lizzie jumps at the chance to solve her very own case and prove herself to her father (and all of mankind) and earn a position in the firm. Lizzie gets herself into all kinds of trouble as she follows leads, searches for evidence, interviews witnesses, and cavorts with questionable characters in an effort to prove Bingley's innocence, find the murderer, and beat Darcy.
I enjoyed the mystery a lot, but the romance didn't quite do it for me. It felt a smidge contrived to fit the original story, and if I'm honest, this version of Darcy is one of my least favourites. He just didn't come across as an exceptional or very interesting character, even at the end. I was much more invested in Lizzie herself, and in solving the mystery.
My favourite part of this book was probably the characters. I felt that the author stayed true to the personalities of the characters as portrayed in other versions of the story that I have known and loved, which is really important, in my opinion, especially when retelling a well-known classic with such iconic characters.
I've learned that this is the first in a series of Jane Austen murder mystery retellings which will be coming out in the next few years. I must say that I am very excited to see what other adventures the author will take us on, and I'm also curious to know if there will be any character crossovers.
I am a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice but Austen inspired fiction is generally a no-no for me. That being said, I love a good old mystery and a murder to solve. The idea of Lizzie and D'arcy working together to defend Bingley and find the real killer sounded like something I just shouldn't pass up.
I loved it. I especially liked how the author worked in one or two lines of the more famous dialogue and quotes from P&P. It was cleverly executed and had me laughing out loud. The crime itself and the investigations made by Lizzie made great reading. An entertaining mystery with a few unexpected twists.
I really hope there are more mysteries in the pipeline for Lizzie and D'arcy to solve.
Initially, I was confused about the time period. Was it set in the modern-day with Regency societal conventions or was it set in the Regency era with a few modern twists on societal norms? I imagined it to be the Regency era but it wasn't really clear until the author notes in the end credits and I'm not sure the teen target market will necessarily draw the correct conclusion.
*4.5
Pride and Premeditation is a combination of Jane Austen and Agatha Christie. It manages to add an exciting and unique twist to a well-known classic.
Elizabeth Bennet is trying to prove herself as a lawyer and ends up caught in a murder investigation. The author did an amazing job at capturing the essence of the characters while having them trying to solve the mystery. Having Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy be rivals in this makes their relationship and banter more fun to read about, and adds another layer to the romance.
The author did not go as in-depth into the side characters, as in the source material, but I wish she had because they could have added a lot to the story.
Pride and Premeditation was fast-paced and intriguing. I thought I had solved the mystery around 75% in, but it took a few twists and turns that I should have seen coming but didn’t.
This was such a fun ride! I enjoyed the mystery, romance, and family drama that was present throughout the book. However, I do believe that the first half of the book felt way slower than the second half. The second half of the book I finished in one day, while the other half took me a while longer. I also would have hoped the romance would have been a little bit stronger. With the intricate mystery and other plots all happening at once, the romance felt like a quick second thought that only started to happen 60% of the way into the book. All of that being said, congratulations to Tirzah Price for writing a book that make me gasp out loud! I hope there is a sequel!
I really like the concept of this book and taking Pride and Prejudice but make it mystery. It definitely has Stalking Jack the Ripper vibes.
Do I ever not like a Pride and Prejudice adaptation? This time, Lizzie Bennet wants to be lawyer in her father’s firm, but to do so, she must find a case to take on. The Lizzie in this adaptation is headstrong and smart. She felt like a mix of Jo March and Lizzie Bennet in the best possible way. Price managed to create an adapation that could have still lived in the Austen universe and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I am a sucker for any Pride and Prejudice retelling, so I had to pick this one up when I saw it was available! The book had such a great plot and the CHARACTERS! I will definitely be looking into this authors other books!
Elizabeth Bennet, who was 17 y/0 works inconspicuously at their legal service firm, Longbourn. As with the original, Mr Collins, a solicitor, is the heir of the firm and the head is Mr Bennet, a barrister. Since this was in the 19th century, a lot oif restrictions were placed on females and lots of propriety standards were followed. As with the original, Lizzy doesn't want to conform. She wants to be part of the legal team officially. His father gave her a challenge. To win this challenge, she found case to solve. This was a murder case involving the Bingley's and Mr. Darcy. There were other characters in the story that played significant roles as she tries to uncover the truth.
This was a very well written mystery , with good show of some tactics/strategies. Enjoyed the banter between Mr Darcy and Lizzy. Though there is a happy ending, there was not much romance. (I wonder if there is a sequel to this book, esp ODC are young and are just starting). i would really like to have sequels to this.
I highly recommend this book.
I was given an advance readers copy and am leaving a voluntary review. I have this in digital and audiobook formats)
I LOVED THIS Book! Pride + Prejudice with a feminine and murder mystery twist! I enjoyed listening to every minute of this! The characters are compelling, the story keeps you guessing to the end. Where will all of your favorite characters land in this stunning retelling?
I received an ARC via Netgalley.
A classic novel with a fantastic whodunit twist. I couldn't ask for a more fun story.
I'm a fan of adaptations of classic stories and Pride and Premeditation is no exception.
Lizzie is an aspiring lawyer at Mr. Bennet's firm. She is challenged to prove herself so she decides to solve a local murder in order to save the accused. You get your classic Darcy/Lizzie banter, the loveable Bingley, and, of course, the single sighted Mrs. Bennett. I love the twist on these memorable characters Tirzah Price has given us. The murder mystery keeps you on your toes as you try to figure who the perpetrator could be.
This is a premise that shouldn't work: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, rewritten as a young adult murder mystery, in which Lizzie Bennet investigates the death of a gentleman in an attempt to clear Mr. Bingley's name and convince her father to let her practice law. The transposing of the classic novel into a murder mystery worked surprisingly well, but I was never quite able to suspend my disbelief when Lizzie genuinely believed her father might give her a job in his law firm. This was also my first attempt at an audio review copy, and I found the artificially generated narrator to be less bothersome than I anticipated.
If you love murder mysteries, enemies to lovers, Jane Austen, and some Georgian era law and investigation... oh man will you love this.
I had a BLAST reading this. Just absolutely everything I love about the original Pride and Prejudice and everything I adore about cozy mysteries just combined into one. You can tell the author has a deep love and appreciation of the source material (even more evident in the authors note, in which she humorously apologises to Austen for “all the murders”). If you’re familiar with the story, I’m sure you’ll be able to guess the characters “whodunnit” ahead of time, but that knowledge didn’t in any way take away from the joy of reading it for me.
Now in terms of historical accuracy, the author did rather openly take some liberties, particularly in relation to Lizzie’s ambitions to become a barrister. However, because it was cute and fun and a conscious choice by the author to make it more along the lines of a cute, alternate history, I didn’t mind those choices at all.
The plot is much more focused on the murder mystery, Lizzie’s goal of working at her father’s law firm, and of course, the budding relationship with Darcy. That is to say that a lot of the other familiar plots of the story (such as Jane and Bingley) are lessened or sidelined entirely in service of the new function of the plot. Again, because of the way the murder mystery was structured, the adjustments and changes made sense (in my opinion). I was completely and utterly invested in both Lizzie’s law aspirations and her relationship with Darcy.
Basically, I didn’t really have any problems with it and it was a delightful, fast paced read. Go read it (or listen, the audiobook narrator was fun)! It’s a lovely time.
Phenomenal.
This book had me from the first sentence. The way it re-imagined Pride and Prejudice was masterful. Same wit, same social commentary, same wonderful characters, but with enough of a twist that I was pulled through the book, eager for more.
Elizabeth Bennet wants to work in her fathers law firm, not just as an unrecognized clerk, but as a solicitor and someday a barrister. When a young Mr. Bingley is accused of murder, she is given the chance to prove herself. From there she take the case through its twists and turns, uncovering a mystery that is more twisted then anyone thought possible.
I was so immersed in the world that the plot twist got me, even though it was obvious once I thought about it for a second. I was swept away with Elizabeth as she and Darcy attempt to clear Mr. Bingley's name.
Note: I received a free copy for an honest review
Although I love Pride and Prejudice and have read many adaptations this one missed the mark. It just did not hit the witty plot points like the original. I did not enjoy the character reimagines either. There we a lack of surprise for the who-done-it factor as a fan of P & P.
While I am not a huge Jane Austen fan, I was still able to enjoy this adaptation, because of all of the BBC shows that I've watched and the books that I had to read in high school. This iteration of Lizzie Bennet wants to prove that she can be a lawyer in her father's firm. There is a murder mystery she gets in all kinds of shenanigans trying to solve it all the while running into Mr. Darcy at different times in the story. This was a fun romp. There were enough recognizable people in the story that I think people who loved Pride and Predjudice will really enjoy this book. I really enjoyed listening to the audio. The mystery was OK, I am not one who can figure out mysteries easily and I figured this one out but I think the point was to inhabit this world and be with the Bennet family
However you're not with them as much you really are just with Lizzy. Again it was an enjoyable read I'd recommended especially to mystery readers and Jane Austen fans.
This was an interesting read. I actually didn't expect to enjoy it but I was indeed hooked with the story. The entire story was a good retelling of Pride and Prejudice with the characters that we already love but with a feminist perspective. I like the fact that it sticks to some of the same perspectives and ideas as Jane Austen. It was a refreshing read. Nevertheless I don´t think it will be memorable to the readers since it also felt kind of flat in the story.
I have never really been a fan of Pride and Prejudice. I've seen multiple versions of the movie and loved them, but I have never made it through the book. And unfortunately I didn’t make it through this one either. I really tried, but I just didn’t care. I like the premise. Elizabeth Bennett wants to be a lawyer and practice with her dad, but she is a lady and lady’s done work. Mystery abound, but it’s not entertaining enough to the reader/listerner (as I was reading an audiobook) to care enough to finish the story.
A beautiful twist on a classic tale. Lizzie wants to become an associate at her fathers law firm and is determined to prove herself. She partners with Darcy to discover who murdered one of his friends. As more and more information comes to light Lizzie is challenged to use her womanly wit and to put everything together to find the murderer. She is also able to unravel a whole organization of piracy!
A fun rendition!

What a great new twist on this my favorite classic Austen novel. I love a good murder mystery and I love Pride and Prejudice so it was a foregone conclusion that I would love this book if it were well written. I listened to an audiobook version (not the final audiobook) of this book and it was fantastic. All our favorite characters come back in new and interesting roles. The Bennett’s and the Darcy’s are actually two family law firms. Elizabeth is determined to inherit her father’s and gain a place there over the stupid and incomplete Mr. Collins. To do so, she must prove herself to her father by finding and handling a case. The next case to come in is the murder of Mr. Hurst, and the accused is none other than Mr. Bingley. Elizabeth pursues the case only to discover that Mr. Darcy is his solicitor, but she doesn’t let that stop her from investigating the crime! It’s a wild wild ride to unravel the mystery, and it was loads of fun! And I say this having listened to a robotic voice read it out in near monotone. Just imagine how good the actual text and final audiobook will be?!? I highly recommend this book and look forward to any future continuations or adaptations of other classics! I have a feeling Persuasion will be next...
