I read this book in one snowy day. It was fast, thrilling and creepy. I couldn't put it down. After I finished and thought back on what I just read there were many little things that bothered me. Leah for one, not the strong female protagonist that I usually like. She is more of the ditsy girl in the horror movie that you keep yelling at while she makes horrible decisions just to move the plot along. Her cheating husband Elliot is just as unlikable as he is warm one minute and cold the next and is just unreliable. The police in the small town knew there was a killer on the loose and Leah could identify him, yet they let her walk around unescorted with no protection.
The most likeable character was the villain. Even though the reasoning behind his killing spree was glossed over and confusing he did silly things like feel ashamed when he viewed Leah through a frosted bathroom window. He snuck into her house and left a live duck walking around. Hmm. Okay. I guess just to prove his craziness?
Despite these drawbacks I still couldn't look away and just had to finish the book. The killer was the creepiest I have read in a while with his own signature and blazon confidence. If you are looking for a quick thriller and are able to suspend beliefs then this one if for you!
-2.5 stars-
The Good Neighbour promotes itself as a fast paced psychological thriller centering on Leah Talbott, a woman who crosses path with a charming man who is not what he first seems to be.
While I initially had high hopes for this book, I found myself bored for the first 15% of this book, I forced myself to keep reading and then the pace picked up. I think a part of the reason this book wasn't for me was I found the characters to be very dull and not particularly well developed.
Leah was very forgetable character who had very little personality and I couldn't bring myself to feel invested in any of the characters. Towards the end of the book I found the character of Martin Tate to be a rather over-the-top bad guy and his motives seemed rather confused to me. I read this all the way through as I did want to see how their story ended, and sadly it didn't redeem the read.
The Good Neighbour didn't wow me, but I also didn't dislike it - it was okay. I'd pick up another read by this author, as though the characters were rather generic the plot was interesting.
This book didn't have me gripped but it was a decent enough thriller,Leah is on her way home one when she hits a deer in the road, she knocks at the nearest house to get help.Martin Tate answers the door seeming all polite and helpful, but when Leah returns the next morning to thank him she finds Tate missing and the home owner has been murdered, what follows is a game of cat and mouse as Tate chases Leah and starts to issue her with demands that she has to keep for her families sake.It is a well thriller which i would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre but i wasn't blown away by this book but a decent 4 star thriller.

Addictive, chilling, compelling..... I could go on and on.
This book was such a good read, I devoured it in a couple of sittings. You’ll definitely think twice about knocking at a strangers door.
The Good Neighbour is hard charging right from the beginning, when Leah belatedly realizes that the man who generously opened his door late at night to help her after a car accident wasn't the home owner. Worse, the home owner was dead and the man was most likely the killer. So who was the man and why was he kind to her? More importantly, why did he spare Leah and what does he want with her now?
This is a fast paced and twisty read that is lots of outrageous, over the top fun. Recommended for fans of psychological suspense. #TheGoodNeighbour
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.
On her way home, Leah hits a deer, wrecking her car.
As her phone is out of battery, hoping for assistance, she knocks on the door of the closest house where she's greeted by the charming Martin Tate, who is happy to help.
When Leah returns the next day to thank her neighbour for his kindness, what she finds instead, is a crime scene.
I read and loved the author's previous novel, so I was really looking forward to this ARC.
It was certainly a gripping, fast-paced, and entertaining read that you will devour in no time at all.
So what stopped me from giving it more than 3 stars?
Even though the story is entertaining and never dull, I found the killer's motives rather shallow and implausible. There was no proper explanation as to why he was the way he was. The story overall is far-fetched, and it lacks depth.
However, it is definitely an exciting and entertaining read that will have you madly turning the pages, so if you're looking for an easy and fast read, then look no further.
One dark night, Leah Talbot is driving home late and hits a deer. She needs help to move the deer off the road and get her car out of the ditch so she ventures to the only house around with lights on. There she meets the charming Tate who she feels a mysterious attraction towards. He rings the automobile association for her and gives her a cup of tea while she waits.
So begins this psychological thriller that takes the reader on a rather familiar ride where the police don't believe her story and so she takes it upon herself to prove them wrong. Despite the protagonist making some dumb decisions that are scarcely believable in the beginning, the tension and suspense is slowly ratcheted up towards the climax. Enjoyable but no real surprises here.
The Good Neighbour is a thriller that is suspenseful and keeps you reading in one spot until the last page is read. I loved the narrative and the plot and the need to devour this book! Great twists which made me really enjoy this thriller.
Thank you for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
What a wild ride!
The Good Neighbor begins on a dreary Valentine’s Day evening, with our protagonist, Leah, driving home and worrying about her troubled relationship with husband, Elliott. After escaping a near run in with a motorcycle, she hits a deer and smashes her car. She rings the doorbell at the house by the street and an extremely kind and helpful man, answers the door. He allows her to clean up and calls a towing service for her. For Leah, nothing will be the same after this night.
This book starts out fast and the action just keeps going until the very end. We meet a young woman with very low self-esteem, who knows that her marriage is in serious trouble, but isn’t ready to let go. Her father suffers from Alzheimer's and is constantly calling her by her dead sister’s name. And unknown to her, she has become the obsession of a very dangerous man. Adding to the cast, is a weak, philandering husband, very nosy neighbors, and the police trying to solve a murder.
Great twist at the end, leads to a very satisfying conclusion. I will definitely read more books written by this author.
I think this book has some promise, but I just wasn't a huge fan as is. The entire plot feels too drawn out and it's hard to believe why she never involves the police. Also, the bad guy's motivations are a bit odd. While we do get some back story on some of the characters, it's revealed in sort of random conversation and didn't make me more invested in their outcomes. Also, the final twist just felt like too much and left the story at an odd end. I think the concept and initial idea for the plot are good, but the execution is lacking for me.
This is a good thriller. The concept is very intriguing and not one I’d heard before. A woman is involved in a road accident. She knocks on the door of a nearby neighbour for help. She later learns the neighbour who answered was not in fact a neighbour but a violent killer.
The beginning of this book is really strong. The pace and suspense start high and don’t let up very often. It’s a very quick and easy read. It’s very much a cat and mouse style thriller. It is mostly told through the third person perspective of Leah, with occasionally snippets from the killer.
My only criticism is that I did find some of the villain’s motives a bit far fetched and would have appreciated more exploration of them.
If you like cat and mouse style thrillers, this is well worth a read.
Thank you to Net Galley and One More Chapter for my advanced reader ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Good Neighbour is out on 18 March 2021.
CREEPY!! The Goodneighbour took off at high speed with the action packed suspense, into creepy chilling thrills to down right terrifying! I haven't slept, I've been up all night turning pages and now I can't sleep until day light as I'm scared.
I highly recommend you read The Good Neighbour if you love thrillers with a bit of horror, it definately has the scare factor in the novel.

What an exciting book! Sucked me in right from the beginning and held my interest all the way through. It’s rare to read a book that keeps you guessing even when you put it down. The characters are likable and the suspense is real! Fast paced, action packed and a quick read. Will definitely be reading more of RJ Parker’s books!
This was a great psychological thriller had me guessing until the end. The story was fast paced and the killer was very interesting. I enjoyed this book immensely.
When Leah hits a deer on her way home, all she can think about is getting help. Knocking on a neighbors door she is greeted by a handsome, charming man more than willing to help her. The next day she is off to thank her charming mystery man, until she notices police....everywhere. cue the adrenaline pumping because the home owner is ...dead... but wait it's not prince charming but a woman... cue the creepy music because things just got good! I could not put this down!!!
This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
My heart could not stop racing. Just when you had it all figured out, a new plot twist emerges and the story takes a whole new turn. Characters you would not expect to be involved are involved and so many secrets unveil themselves that nothing makes sense as we know it. I love books that leave you excited during the climax and leave you speechless at the end and The Good Neighbour definitely did that and then some. We have a following of murder mystery fans within our library community and I can't wait to share this title with them.
We will consider adding this title to our Mystery collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. This book was just OK. I did not feel a strong connection to the characters in this book. Great story though, an accident and you go get help from your neighbors and ends up being a killer. Very interesting. The second part of the book was face paced and very suspenseful. Loved that part of this book for sure. I review on NetGalley as well as Instagram.
After Leah has a minor accident one evening, she makes her way to a previously unnoticed neighbor's house for assistance. The man who answers the door lets her clean up and call for help. The next day, she returns to thank him and finds the house covered in police, investigating the murder of the woman who lived there, likely by the man Leah met the previous night. I liked the idea of this, but I didn't end up liking the book as much as I had hoped. Leah made some choices that seemed strange to me and that got her entangled in the whole mess a lot more than she had to be if she had come clean on everything to the police from the start. Then there would have been no book, though. 3 stars.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
This story was not plausible, the main character Leah got on my nerves, the police were inept and the crazy guy was too crazy for his own good. The story tried to be too clever . Sorry I cannot recommend this book 2 stars
