The opening of this novel was compelling and the premise intrigued me. Leah Talbot is driving home when she accidentally hits a deer and damages her car, She approaches a house nearby for help and is met with a handsome man who helps her phone the police and the AA. It soon becomes clear that Martin Tate was not the owner of the house. He had killed the owner, Alice Booth and now had his sights set on stalking Leah.
I think the storyline would have been more successful if Elliot and Leah had been a happily married couple. As it was, she didn't value his life as much as she would if she had been in love with him. I wanted to like Leah, but she made stupid decisions- particularly in not involving the police. Would she really have kissed someone she had just met in those circumstances?
The writing was good and the climactic scene at the end was fast paced and full of suspense. Gory deaths- especially the bathtub! The slaughterhouse felt a bit cliche. I liked the final twist.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
Highly addictive and thrilling!
I could not put this book down, and even after I finished, I found myself still thinking about the story.
A super quick read that starts off strong and gets you hooked!
For me, it petered out a little mid way, but I was invested in finding out how it all came together in the end.
Leah hits a deer on a quiet country road, phone is dead, so she goes to a neighboring home to call AA and police. Gentleman there is very nice, welcoming. The home is cozy and warm. There is a little attraction between them which is intriguing - we already know Leah and her husband are not on the best terms.
Turns out the gentleman at the home had just murdered the real resident there and is now targeting Leah!
What ensues is a quick paced thriller that is somewhat predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Thankful for the ARC!
When Leah gets into a car accident, she knocks on a nearby house for help. Little does she know what will be unleashed when a psycho opens the door. Her life is turned upside down in a matter of a day. I would have liked more of a history on Tate but I did enjoy the telling back in Tates words.
This is a creative, fun thriller with a fantastic setup. Leah is driving late at night and hits a deer. She goes to a neighboring house for help with her broken down car and a handsome stranger comes to the door, helping this damsel in distress. (She literally passes out in his arms.) When she goes back to thank him the following day, she learns that he’s not exactly who he said he was....Oh, and the police are there, because there’s been a murder.
This was a quick and fun page-turning read that started off fast-paced and nail-biting. The writer is talented and the plot was devilishly fun. Unfortunately though, things then went a little off the rails as the plot fell victim to two of my pet peeves: 1) a heroine who is too frozen in shock or (worse) too dense to make good choices, and 2) a heroine who doesn’t call the police at the first obvious opportunity, or even. (Or here, even at the second, third, or fourth opportunity, or in the face of total mayhem.) Things had gotten totally outlandish by the end and it could have easily been stopped by a call to the police....and yet, the author never gives us any kind of compelling reason why this doesn’t happen.
Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this author’s writing style, his devious imagination, and the breakneck speed of the action. I’ll definitely try another book by him but I’ll beg him to make his heroine a little less easily frazzled next time.
Thanks to NetGalley, One More a chapter and the author for the ARC! I’ll look forward to seeing what this author can do with his next book.
Overall, an enjoyable read, I liked the pace I felt it was fast and snappy and I love a book with short chapters as I find I tend to get through them so much quicker as I always think ‘just one more chapter’.
The storyline was great, I was intrigued by ‘the neighbour’ and how the story was going to develop, the reason it was a three star read for me was because it didn’t explain why the people were targeted, why the people were killed and why Leah found herself in the middle of it as it hinted at not being random. I’d be intrigued to find out the back story and am at a bit of a loss as to why it was not included as the rest of the book was great! I liked the way it ramped up but like I said felt it fell a little flat at the end due to no explanation or conclusion.
Driving along late at night on a familiar country road, Leah Talbot narrowly avoids a motorbike but then crashes into a deer. Receiving help at a nearby house, she decides to call back the next morning to thank the man, only to be greeted by a policeman. The tension mounts as the police investigate the murder and Leah’s life is turned upside down. The increased danger begins to affect the people in Leah’s life and ultimately puts her family at risk. A slow burner of a psychological thriller that ends in a crescendo, with a three-star rating. With thanks to NetGalley and the author for a preview copy for review purposes. All opinions expressed herein are freely given and totally my own.
The plot was well written and not what I was expecting. The author kept the reader guessing as the story went from on plot idea to another.
a great concept and it led off rather well and then kind of fell off.
I wish Leah had been more fleshed out. A lot of what she did didn't seem believable. Lot of this was too far fetched. There was just enough to hold my attention to allow me to finish but I didn't love this one like I was hoping to
So it’s a quick read but a very frustrating main character and with a more unsatisfying than not cat and mouse game plot
This is a good read that will have you hooked.
Leah hits a deer on her way home and damages her car so she can’t get home. Her mobile battery is dead so she starts the walk home and then sees a house that she’s not noticed before.
The man who answers the door is happy to let her use the phone to reach the breakdown company and tells her she can wait in the house. Leah then feels faint and collapses with the shock. She’s grateful for the help but chooses to wait outside for the AA.
The next day Leah goes back to the house to say thanks to the man who helped her but there are Police cars outside the house. When Leah asks what’s happened she’s in for a big shock.
She soon realises her life is in danger and starts to receive texts from the man who helped her, but what does he really want?
This is a gripping thriller that will have you racing through the pages.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Hmmm... I was initially hooked. Great little twist at the start however as I read on I found it becoming more and more unrealistic. And the ending!? Really? It’s a shame because I absolutely loved the start. This could have been an amazing thriller.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4
When Leah Talbot hits a deer on a deserted road near her villlage, she spots a light on on a nearby house and approaches, hoping that someone is home. Handsome Martin Tate answers the door to a bedragg;ed and traumatised Leah, inviting her in. she doesn't stay long but Leah feels an indescrible pull to the man who helped her in her hour of need. Bit when she returns to say thankyou, it isOt artin who answers the door. It's the police.
This is a grfipping fast paced. It's quite far fetched at times. Full of suspense, twists and a few oh my gosh moments, all the things needed to keep you turning the pages. I did prefer the first half of the story. There was not as much suspense in the second half. the killer is quite creepy. There's a surprising twist at the end.
I would like to thank #eNetGalley, #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #RJParker for my ARC #TheGoodNeighbour in exchange for an honest review.
Between the synopsis and the opening chapters, The Good Neighbor by R.J. Parker had so much potential. Unfortunately it did not live up to it.
There were a lot of action and crazy scenarios, which I often enjoy in suspense and thrillers. The Good Neighbor even had a touch of graphic horror which I would normally love, but there was way too much repetition and Leah’s character fell flat for me.
Some reviewers may find the lack of back story on Martin Tate not to their taste, but I thought this just enhanced the creep factor. And I really liked where R.J. Parker was headed towards the end when Martin was talking to Leah during the showdown. The idea of Leah freeing herself the way Martin was hoping added a very interesting layer to the story. And the final little twist put a smile on my face, but it just wasn’t enough for me to rave about The Good Neighbor.
If you have nothing else to read (yea, right!) then I would say to give The Good Neighbor a read. I will try at least one more book by R.J. Parker since the synopsis for both The Dinner Party and While You Sleep sound interesting, but I won’t be recommending this one to strangers… like I do The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides!
A bit repetitive and outlandish but not all bad
This was a great concept and it led off rather well. But it quickly evolves into a who would do that and more importantly why?!? It’s hard to sympathize with Leah because we don’t really know her. She’s not very well fleshed out and her actions don’t shine too favorable a light.
Martin is also lacking a bit of back story but his parts were enjoyable none the less. He is pure evil.
Suspenseful and containing multiple twists, this is a quick and entertaining read. The final twist was the best.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for a copy in exchange for a review.
I quite enjoyed this book but for some reason it was lacking . It had an interesting story but the characters were a bit peculiar. It was tense wondering if the main character was in fact going to be the bad guy and get her own back for the bad way she’d been treated . I would recommend this book but it somehow didn’t gel with me that well
I finished this book in record time as it was such a gripping read. A bit creepy in places but definitely worth a read. Highly recommended
I’d like to thank HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Good Neighbour’ by R J Parker in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
It’s late at night and Leah Talbot is on her way home when she hits a deer. As her car is too damaged to be moved Leah starts walking until she sees a house in the distance. She knocks at the door and it’s opened by a man, Martin Tate, who’s only too pleased to help and to whom she feels an immediate attraction. The following day she returns to the house to thank him for his help but the house is surrounded by police officers who tell her that the female owner of the house has been brutally murdered. Who’s Martin Tate and what was he doing in the house? There’s no sign of him until Leah starts receiving text messages saying he wants to meet her!
‘The Good Neighbour’ is an action-packed thriller with an exciting storyline that kept me reading as I needed to know what was going to happen next. The story is told in alternate chapters by Leah and then Martin giving a good understanding of what’s going on in both their minds. It’s extremely exciting with drama, suspense and intrigue and the final twist was both startling and unexpected. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this thriller which I read in less than twenty-four hours and can wholeheartedly recommend it.
A brilliant idea for a thriller with an amazingly good start so I thought I was on to a real winner but unfortunately the whole thing quickly went downhill from there. Why oh why would Leah choose to join in the ridiculous cat and mouse game that Tate wanted her to play? Well she wouldn’t unless the author had devised some compelling reason for her to act so foolishly but he hadn’t.
The kernel of a good book was there but just never developed into one.
Leah has an accident on the roas on her way home. She hits a deer. So she goes to first house she sees, knocks and after a couple of minutes the door opens and a man is there. She feels an instant connection and it seems he feels the same.
Martin is in the middle of something when he he hears knocking. He opens the door and finds a woman there, her hands covered in blood. When she tells him what happened and asks to use his phone he lets him in. He so wants to help her. He calls the police for her.
Next day when Leah goes back to say thanknyou again with a bottle of wine what she finds there will change her life for good. Or for worse?
Okay so the book’s premise took me off my feet. I needed to find out just what really happens with Leah. The ending was not what I expected but I don’t mind, all the better.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.
I enjoyed this book but it was not a stand out book for me. I found I didnt care for Leah and some of the things she did were not believeable. When the police were chasing her and she got away then the police phoned her dad knowing he was ill but didnt send someone to double check she wasnt there didnt sit with me. I would recommend this as a holiday or rainy day read.
